Mosman Art Gallery, Corner Art Gallery Way and Myahgah Road, Mosman

via http://festivalofmosman.net/2011/events/open-air :

Chris will create a video installation within using the romantic ideas of the Plein Air tradition as a starting point. These video and audio pieces will be aural and imagistic fictions that imagine possible Australia's and alternate histories of art and nation that spring from the crucial fulcrum of events unfolding in the late 19th century to which the images produced in these locations are central.

The video work will be linked to a site specific GPS iPhone application which can be viewed at Sirius Cove. Together, Chris' video installation and iPhone application will create a strong sense of place and form a link between the Gallery and Sirius Cove, highlighting this important part of Mosman's rich cultural heritage.

Sunday TINA Newcastle rain

Sunday TINA 2011 was a day when the rain set in - it was heavy at times, yet it didn't stop people attending the festival panel sessions and performances. this is recorded with binaural mics (line-in adapter - finally found the little battery for it!) on Hunter St Mall - complete with locals/passerbys talking as they walked past me

Artefacts of Australian experimental music: Volume II

In 2007, Shame File Music released the landmark compilation CD Artefacts of Australian experimental music: 1930-1973, to critical acclaim. Praised variously as one of the first serious investigations into the sparse recorded history of experimental sound practice in Australia, and its historical importance is as palpable as the often exciting and exhilaratingly experimental sounds it contains, the compilation and its extensive liner notes opened Australia's (and the world's) ears to a vibrant history that most previously thought had never existed.

1-3 September 2010, hosted by the State Library of Victoria

Outside the Circle sound culture beyond the mainstream

'Outside the Circle' will explore the development and growth of sound cultures that began life outside of commercial and mainstream circles. The conference aims to provide a forum for discussions concerning collections, recordings, research and technology based on alternative perspectives and paradigms. We hope to learn more about the individuals and groups working on the ‘outside’ as well as their unusual uses of recorded sound. How is material generated from these alternative sources collected, preserved and accessed? What impact might this have on curatorial policy?

Iris to Hypnos / Fieldhead "Crest"

this Iris to Hypnos / Fieldhead "Crest" album is as beautiful as Nature. hard to contemplate something human-made could be this beautiful

I'd love to be able to make Sounds as beautiful as these. how do they learn this. sounds like pure emotion

& the cd looks like a little vinyl record. and it's like they've worked with zines with their mailout packaging surprises. such care

unfortunately (for others) the cd is no longer available but maybe if you contact them they might do another run?

SAD-k001 : birds at herzog st jerusalem

Shannon O'Neill has started uploading a SAD - Sound A Day - different sounds he's made or recorded or found. it's very inspiring, some of the sounds are quite quirky, and ambient, and experimental and different. he explains what the sounds are and how he made them too which I find useful. so I asked if others could join in. I've been posting a Song for the day to share with my friend Ray and anyone else who sees it, and also with the share this course/book crew. I've just noticed how many friends on facebook have been sharing songs - often youtube videos of the songs, so they can be played/embedded in the post - it's great to see! and hear. and doesn't even feel too promotional. I'm not sure if I'll be able to do a Sound a Day - as in an original sound - as I don't really make music, but I do record a lot, so maybe I'll try post a sound a week - usually a found sound or something I've recorded.

here's my SAD-k001 : birds at herzog st jerusalem
it's about 10 minutes long, so best listened to in the background. it's recorded using my Nokia N95 phone. I was sitting out on the little balcony at the back of the studio apartment I was staying in - the one with the green gate - and thinking about Starhawk's "Earth Healer" class I was taking at MLA. I was reading a book called "Homesick" by Eshkol Nevo - I was a bit homesick for Australia at this time, and it wasn't long before I moved back home. and I was looking up at the Jerusalem stones on the building next door - so sturdy and strong they seemed. all the buildings in Jerusalem are made of jerusalem stone (limestone) and it gives the city character and makes it glitter in the light at times. there was one bird sitting on the wires chatting to me, then some others came and joined in. there were long grassy weeds with pretty little white flowers in the small shared backyard, which were later removed - one week they were there and I had a verdant backyard, then I went to Istanbul for a work trip and checked afterwards and the yard was barren. It was such a lovely relaxing day, I wanted to record the sounds to help trigger my memories of it.

Jeff Burch's music for shadows

after a while listening to Jeff Burch's set, I became transfixed on the shadows on the screen - it seemed as if there were multiple versions of him playing. the digital noise video background projected onto the 'real' Burch, so at times he seemed like a projection also - which was the real person playing?? :)

Garry Bradbury & Alan LAMB's performance - live mixing in the pitch of "B" (also the pitch of Bees in chorus) - Bradbury selected some of the raw wires sounds and compiled them together into a georgeous layered ambient piece, and Lamb played the wire with a large bow - such an amazing physical performance with simply beautiful sounds. this was the highlight performance of the night for me. masterful!!

Experimental Music: Audio Explorations in Australia (book)

Experimental Music: Audio Explorations in Australia is written by artists, producers and participants in alternative music-making, and including a companion CD, Experimental Music explores the development of forms, ideas and scenes in Australia from the 1970s to the present. It brings together a wide range of musical experimentation, from post-punk, noise, appropriation, electronic dance and listening music, to free improv, computer process music, experimental radio, instrument building and audiovisual fusions -- practices that have formed an integral part of Australian creative culture. Experimental Music illustrates how these forms have influenced each other to create a fertile and diverse culture, and highlights why it is vital to question, experiment and break the rules.
