Online festival explores alternative presentations for upcoming artists

On 20 November the 4th edition will exhibit more than hundred works of audio visual art from international artists on the Streaming Festival website. Ten days non-stop contemporary art, films and visual experiments, available at any time from any location.
The Streaming Festival is based in the Netherlands but has no geographical borders; anyone with an internet connection can plug into a festival stream and start watching without having to pay an entrance fee.

Extinction or adaptation? Evolution or Revolution? What are we facing?

The complexity and urgency of the crises of today calls for us to
engage together in new ways. Deep shifts in our consciousness may be
required for long-term cultural changes to occur. This is a call for
expressions of interest from people who are concerned with these issues.

A symposium followed by a residency is to be held late January to
early February 2011 in New Plymouth, Aotearoa New Zealand. Initial
expressions of interest are due 21 November, 2009.

The SCANZ 2011: Eco sapiens symposium will be an event involving
individuals from a number of different worlds (e.g scientists,
artists, social activists and community change agents, cultural
commentators, educators, tangata whenua). Our primary aim is to
facilitate connections and foster innovative, and practical solutions
to the issues we are facing. Accordingly, a mixture of presentations,
discussions, informal exchanges and workshops are planned. Roger
Malina will be presenting from France on 'Open observatories', and Te
Huirangi Waikerepuru will speak on Maori conceptions of environment.
The symposium will inspire and inform the residency that follows, and
also provide opportunities for people to collaborate on projects
beyond SCANZ.

The SCANZ 2011: Eco sapiens two week residency is designed for those
individuals or groups who would like to work on creative, poetically
pragmatic or provocative projects which raise awareness of the issues
that confront us, generate connections between people, and with their
natural environment, and which grapple with the challenges of
individual and collective evolution.

Interdisciplinary approaches and the involvement of diverse groups is
welcomed. Residency projects can take place in a wirelessly networked
botanic garden, along the coastline and with communities. Networked,
DIY, or otherwise actively and openly distributed concepts are also
encouraged. Project participants are not necessarily required to be in
New Plymouth. Residency projects that are shortlisted will be included
in funding applications.

The 'Free Music Machine' was created by musician and singer Burnett Cross and the Australian composer Percy Grainger. Grainger a virtuoso Pianist and pupil of Busoni, had been developing his idea of "free music" since 1900: based on eighth tones and complete rhythmic freedom and unconventionally notated on graph paper. Grainger had experimented using collections of Theremins and changing speeds of recorded sounds on phonograph disks and eventually developed his own instruments. The Ventura Film Festival, which was started in 2004 by Jordan Older and his father, has recently concluded its first event of 2009 at the Majestic Ventura Theater in Ventura, California with the Ventura Film Festival "Fun Day" on February 16, 2009 at 2pm. The Ventura Film Festival is a combination online and traditional film festival requiring all submissions to be uploaded online and submitted via traditional means. The Ventura Film Festival has maintained that one of it's main goals is to give a large part of any proceeds to forest and ocean preservation efforts. The 4th annual Carnival of e-Creativity (CeC 2009) is scheduled to be held February 27 to March 1, 2009, in the sylvan spaces of Sattal Estate, just above Bhimtal, near Nainital, in the Lower Kumaon of the new Himalayan Indian state of Uttarakhand.

The Weaving Together of People

Solar Circuit Aotearoa New Zealand (SCANZ) is the interCreate Research Centre's major project, a two week residency for artists, producers, writers, theorists and curators will be held in New Plymouth New Zealand from January 26th to February 8th 2009. Project partners are the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Puke Ariki integrated library and museum.

Raranga tangata refers to the weaving together of people, a phrase used to describe the internet and adopted by Sally Jane Norman and Sylvia Nagl in their work. The aim for SCANZ 2009 is to weave an enduring fabric of people and technology, located in this place: Taranaki, Aotearoa New Zealand, Pacific Ocean.

Australia's largest festival of experimental electronic arts and culture, "Electrofringe", will burst through the cracks of Newcastle from October 2 – 6, 2008, for its eleventh year as part of "This Is Not Art". More than 100 emerging and established artists from Australia and overseas will take part in 80 events over five days including workshops, gigs, screenings, performance and public intervention.

Electrofringe in 2008 brims with new ventures. These include an artists-in-residence program and a three-week interactive media exhibition. New program gems include a hybrid media/dance performance, an all-girls soldering workshop, a chorus composed for Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, an audiovisual "love-in", and a chamber recital for robots.

Special international guests include Birchville Cat Motel (NZ), Domenico Sciajno (Italy), xtine (US), The League of Imaginary Scientists (everywhere) and The Green Eyl & Sengewald (Germany). Japan is well represented by elongated harshcore musician Maruosa, noise artists Pig & Machine, and experimental multi-instrumentalist KK NULL.

Electrofringe 2008 features an impressive screening program including award-winning highlights from the Japan Media Arts Festival and SIGGRAPH 2008, surround-sound selections from New York's Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Centre and eclectic works from France’s Arcadi festival. There are also two specially curated screening reels called ElectroEtre and ElectroProjections compiled from open, international call-outs.

Second Life is a 3d virtual environment created by Linden Lab (R) which has captured the attention of researchers and teachers from around the world from a variety of disciplines.

This workshop aims to improve the understanding of Second Life as a Learning and Research environment. It will bring 35 researchers together to collaborate, discuss and workshop diverse topics related to research and learning in Second Life. We will pursue a full-day schedule in which participants will discuss their work and interests on four different topics: learning in Second Life, integrated learning, the contributions of research to the community and ethical research methods. How can we better enable learning in this sphere? How can we better enable research?

Tracts is a group show of sound installations at Melbourne's Blindside Gallery as part of the 2008 Next Wave Festival that examines the role of sound in the world. The exhibition explores how sound can shape our understandings of our surroundings and ourselves, bringing into question the nature of space within a gallery and the role of the subject in experience. Assembled by several of Australia's premier emerging sound artists, the exhibition invites the audience to enter, surround, and interact with the installations.

Liquid Architecture 9, Brisbane Powerhouse July 4+5

Liquid Architecture, Australia's premiere festival of audio arts returns to Brisbane this July for an incredible line up of sound and exploratory music from across the globe.

This year, the festival pulls together artists from Germany, France, Portugal and Australia, all of whom test for the very edge of contemporary practices in sound.

Included on the line up are the likes of the influential Portuguese electronic music pioneer Rafael Toral, Australia sound artist Nat and French Musique Concrete composer and environmental recordist Toy Bizarre, who prepares a unique site specific concert in each location he visits, to name but a few of the guests attending this year.

Held in the Rooftop Terrace, the event will feature a spatial sound system to maximize the listening experience for all in attendance! Limited seats, book early. A true festival for the ears!

Netaudio, the Offline Festival for Online Music comes back to London after a great festival in Berlin in 2007

Netaudio'08 will take place from 22nd to 25th October 2008 at Shunt, a extensive labyrinth of tunnels underneath London Bridge Station.

Over four nights we will celebrate the creative output of networked musicians and online communities with talks, workshops, showcases and performances. Parts of Netaudio'08 will be programmed through an open call for entries. Tending Networks: The 5th Aotearoa Digital Arts Symposium will address new developments, connections, and opportunities in digital, new media and electronic art practice in New Zealand and internationally.

The symposium will feature presentations by major international artists Young Hae Chang Heavy Industries of Korea, and Adam Hyde, a New Zealander based in Amsterdam. A wide range of artists and researchers from Christchurch and around New Zealand will present current projects, and panel discussions will focus on the creation of new work, including the role of community networks, the value of collaboration, and the challenges posed by exhibiting digital art.

The "Boom Book" was a project carried out during 2007 as a commemoration of Portugal's Boom Festival's 10th anniversary. The goal was is to independently release a book about Boom but also to highlight its main contribution to today's world - as leader in incorporating novel approaches to entertainment and providing experiences lived through a festival which can pioneer new perceptions and visions, enhancing all of us and our relationship with the world we live in.

This book is a collaborative project put together by anthropologists, journalists, designers, illustrators, poets, musicologists, and photographers to capture the essence of the Boom Festival. The Boom Book includes essays, interviews, visionary art by Alex Grey, Robert Venosa or Android, and innovative texts about psy-trance. It is a cultural record of striking importance, capturing the beauty of Boom and also the role of subcultures in a modern world.

Each year, at the WORLDTRONICS music festival, the House of World Cultures presents the most exciting musical developments from the world of electronic music. Having focused on Japan, Chile, the Congo and Israel in 2007, its second edition will now be devoting one of the evenings to Brazil: with electronic music reflecting on the theme of fifty years of Bossa Nova.

A new annual outdoor festival has hit Sydney's inner west. The 2008 Sydney Shakespeare Festival kicks off in January with Much Ado About Nothing, a boisterous celebration of love as well as a sobering examination of misinterpretation, dishonesty and deception. The festival is on at 8pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 January until 17 February 2008 in Bicentennial Park, Glebe Foreshore. The festival is FREE for children 12 years and under, people with disabilities and people aged 65 years and over. Making its festival debut at Marrickville Road Festival this year is an artistic new band called Super Massive. Super Massive will perform on the Urban Stage at Marrickville Road Festival, Marrickville on Sunday 9th September at 11am.

Named for modern society’s collective fascination with superlatives and for the biggest and best! of everything as much as for their wall of sound, Super Massive is a synth pop rock band with exhilarating, danceable grooves, an emphasis on melody and an engaging, energetic stage presence. The band has a unique sound and a treasure trove of songs that respond to the nature of today’s urbanised, fast-paced world.

Electrofringe 2007 programme is now online. This is one of my favourite festivals, and it takes place annually in Newcastle, north of Sydney, Australia. During the festival Newcastle comes alive with creatives from all parts of Australia and overseas. The umbrella festival is called This is Not Art. Last year's festival was really hands on, which made it extra fun. This year looks set to keep your creative juices flowing also, with sessions such as Physical Computing : 1, Radio Locus Workshops such as Build your own Radio, Mulchwerk, a Dorkshop Sense & Control, a Homemade Instruments workshop Gestural Control & Feedback plus heaps more.
