music is Indian Summer by Big Bud

I went along to the Sarai Independent Fellows 2006 workshops last weekend (26-27/08) @ Sarai, CSDS, New Delhi. I missed the first two days sessions, but here is a slideshow video of some of the saturday & sunday sessions. it was really interesting - both the presentations and the discussions afterwards. some sessions were in Hindi so I couldn't follow as easily. there were a wide range of projects though - art, music, urban issues. hopefully they'll link to some of the full papers on the sarai.net website. it was a great way to get another insight into life and goings on in India and related places.

There's a couple of conferences coming up which I wouldn't mind checking out.. don't think I'll have a chance in person as I'm still in Delhi for work, but I think they'll have video / audio recordings of them so I can check out later.
Vloggercon 2006 is being held in San Francisco this year. Here's the blurb from their site:
"VLOGGERCON 2006 is the intersection between media-makers and technology. A space for dialog and interaction. Of creation and collaboration. A media village born on the internet, and making camp for one weekend in San Francisco.
In the past year, videoblogging has grown into a myriad of forms with a worldwide voice. And your voice is needed at Vloggercon– after all, the media is being made by you so it’s your voice that we want to hear! Vloggercon is a two-day collection of roundtable discussions about the emergence and the future of this new medium; not a series of lec-tures. This conference is created for meeting and learning from each other, so be ready to share your thoughts!
Vloggercon 2006 will be held June 10 & 11 at the Swedish American Hall, 2174 Market Street, San Francisco CA 94114. "
http://www.vloggercon.com/ - tickets are available online.
Where 2.0
This one's about locative and GIS / Google Earth, Second Life / Electric Sheep & similar web apps. Would be good to see what's happening on this front at the moment. Here's the blurb from their site :
" Everything happens somewhere. With open source and free web mapping tools like Ka-Map and Google Maps, we finally have a way to display location information. At last year's Where 2.0, we put the spotlight on the grassroots developers building mash-ups on platforms from Microsoft, Yahoo!, and Google. This year we'll look at the latest developments in those platforms as well as the latest startups, civic projects, and labs experiments built on them.
In addition you'll find source mapping tools, open standards for data and location web services, and sensors for obtaining location data. We'll learn how the established geo industry is reacting to the first businesses making money from their grassroots geospatial projects. There's no better place to meet the people behind the mash-ups, the people behind the platforms, and the people looking ahead to the future of geospatial. "

Not Still Art, a forum for artists working in abstract and non-narrative electronic motion imaging with music/sound design, disseminates artists' work via international screenings, live performances, conferences, publications, and hard and virtual media. Not Still Art produces historic and contemporary programs in collaboration with art institutions, broadcasters, publishers, and internet organizations.

Since the inception of the Not Still Art Festival in 1996, when the first "call for entries" went out, tapes have been received from all over the world. Artists who felt isolated for lack of a venue devoted exclusively to their art form have travelled from Toronto, Virginia, Philadelphia, Boston, Rio de Janeiro and Hong Kong to see their work screened at the Festival.

Not Still Art wishes to increase public exposure to an artform that has evolved from the film cell format of the animations of the Cubist painters and the experimental filmmakers of the early 20th. century, to "real-time" electronic imaging with the development of analog video synthesizers in the 1970s and digital tools since the 1980s.

The ecstatic impulse found in the creation of abstract and non-narrative electronic motion imaging communicates universally and internationally.

WHAT: 9th Annual Not Still Art Festival
WHEN: Saturday October 2, 2004 1:00 pm Artists Talk / 8 pm SCREENING
WHERE: Micro Museum, 123 Smith Street, Brooklyn NY (718) 797-3116
CONTACT: nsa "at" improvart.com
ADMISSION: $10. / $5. student/senior (no one refused for lack of funds)
INFO: http://www.improvart.com/nsa/

The 9th annual Not Still Art Festival will screen it's eclectic international mix of music, abstraction and non-narrative shorts at 8:00 pm on Saturday October 2nd at the Micro Museum in Brooklyn.
This finely wrought exhibition of unique and original work will be preceded in the afternoon from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm by previews and interviews with attending artists.

"I'm so glad I found you" is an oft repeated phrase from artists tucked away in their studios in far-flung parts of the world. Often they travel to New York for the festival to meet their peers. This is a joyous event for everyone attending; a party and celebration for the long hours spent in creating their work.

WHO:

ATTENDING ARTISTS: William Brown, Christine Dunn, Chris Ernst, Ido Fluk, Carol Goss, Annie Loui, Robert Pirretti, Stephanie Maxwell, Allan Schindler, Bart Woodstrup, Walter Wright. (Please see links to their home pages at NSA home)

There is a great line up of debut pieces!
Chris Casady's very art deco flash animation; Ido Fluk's rant "What I Want" (not "...a dying mortgage... a house, an SUV, ...spend my life in front of the television..."); Chris Ernst's on and off relationship with the Watts Tower in LA,: Carol Goss' "Byegones", a contemporary take on a 1925 Boswell Sisters tune; Francesco Leprino's very sexy, Italian "On Smoking"; Tod Pardon's fast pasted "Undercover" romp; and Judson Wright's completely abstract "Homicidal Maniac for a President"!

Human relationships are obsessed over in "Cyberdate" (Bart Woodstrup), "Madcatter" (Robert Pirretti), and "Sing to Me You Precious Wound" (Max Gleason). William Brown takes us to a seemingly absurd ritual in India in "Holi Celebration." John Kneckt's playful "Crisis in Sapville" resonates with the presidential election on a surreal level. Mark Zaki's "Absence Presence" is an impressionistic collaboration with dancer, Annie Loui.

Amazing abstract animation from Stephanie Maxwell, Christine V. Dunn, Keum-Taek Jung, Stephan Larson, Gerhard Mantz, Walter Wright, and Audri Phillips is complemented by music from a range of composer/musicians, including: John Adamczyk, Christopher Brakel, Allan Schindler, and Edgar Grana. World class improvised jazz comes to us from Arrigo Cappelletti /Giulio Visibelli and the Jon Voight Ensemble.

ADDITION: Friday night October 1 at 9:00 pm at the Micro Museum there will be a live Electrovideomove Performance with Music: DJ DeftlyD, Darryl Hell, David Linton; Video: Dial888, Lena, w2; Dance: Joe Burgio, Teresa Czepiel, Heather McQuiston, Edisa Weeks. Make sure to catch this the night before the Not Still Art Festival

BACKGROUND:
Founded and curated by Carol Goss as a sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts, Not Still Art began in 1996 when four video artists (Goss, Walter Wright, Peer Bode, Bob Doyle) from the 1970s gathered together in Cherry Valley, New York for a public screening of their abstract and non-narrative video art. That event evolved into the annual Not Still Art Festival International Screening pimarily by word of mouth and e-mail relay.

The impetus was twofold: first, there was a need for a festival that focused exclusively on abstract and non-narrative electronic motion imaging with music/sound design; secondly, with the internet and e-mail it was at last possible to reach many of the international artists working in this form with a very small budget.

SPONSORS:
Abstract and non-narrative work has never been easy to fund raise for - mainly because it defies description - so try to write a grant proposal! So the Not Still Art Festival has progressed with the help of the artists, who contribute an application fee, and the Experimental Television Center, which pays a stipend to traveling artists from a Presentation Funds Grant (redistributed funds from the New York State Council on the Arts) .

We are also are fortunate to have Gala Radowic of GRS Systems in Manhattan convert PAl submissions to NTSC. The Laziza's of the Micro Museum support us with their energy and their space. Telenet.net, a subsidiary of Logical.net, has provided us with a website and internet connection from day one and Improvart.com has shared equipment and technical resources.

day 1
19 March 2005
Goldsmiths College, London

bang & toggle -> easy way to see what's going on in the patch; test; use it to print values

apple m = status window
number box passes on info when it receives the bang

toggle
- off when 0 (int)
- on for any other int value
- if it gets a float, it truncates the decimal to give 0 or 1 eg 1.57 would give 1; 0.73 would give 0

give arguments labels if multiple elemnts are used
eg print A, print B

prepend set - message -> monitoring data; to preview data
timings are in milliseconds

metro 1000-34 -> 1000 is the start value; 34 will override 1000 (right input)

help metro -> to show help pages (patches); or check help menus; also check status bar

1. what numbers do we use to control the object
2. what numbers do we need
3. how do we convert 1. to 2.

gui:
- toggle
- int number
- float number
- sliders
- radio buttons x/y
- dial
- keyboard
-- polyphonic (multiple select/toggle keys) or monophonic (single select keys)
- apple i shows inspector eg uslider inspector

fatal loops = endless loop; stack overflow

right to left rule of calculation
- patch values are calculated from top to bottom and right to left

maths expressions

select object
- if then else

midi - can use virtual midi if no midi device connected

midi objects
- don't use midi in/out much as this will include all the sync/clock/timing midi commands
- use note in/out or bend in/out (pitch bend) etc instead
- ctrl in -> fader control

16channel = 1 channel for each device
- this is right most number (A)
note in
(C) (B) (A)

(A) who do you speak to (channel)
(B) what do you tell it (velocity)
(C) what value (value)

need to send note off also to stop notes. use makenote instead to manage this for you.
makenote 67 1000 will turn off the note after 1 sec (1000)
if musician plays notes on keyboard they decide when the note offs are sent so you don't need to send them for live players; only for virtual midi

trigger ff
trigger ii (int)
trigger (bb (bang)
- avoids the right-left problems for cases i++ or ++i

----

first audio / msp

audio in (mic icon) / adc (sound cards with multiple inputs)
audio out (speaker icon) / dac

option - dsp status
- double click on objects
- select sound card / audio driver options

adc input I/O mappings
- you could setup 5.1. or 8ch audio here or best to do it using dac options

dsp status:
latency
- more response, smaller the number
- tradeoff is that audio might drop out
- if you set signal overdrive = on this guarantees continuous audio stream
- you may get timing issues as max struggles to keep up with the processing required withe overdrive=on
- overdrive=off, max performs better but audio may drop

sampling rate 44100
i/p ch
o/p ch
i/o vector size 512
sig vector size 64

msp patch leads are yellow
gain faders are striped

max objects -> calculates 1msec
msp objects - calculate according to the sampling rate eg 44k

dsp status:
cpu utilisation -> this is % cpu max/msp needs to do audio
- @ 70% mouse movements are degraded
- max/msp doesn't support dual processors for msp/dsp audio but you could assign one processor to max and the other to msp/dsp
- another way round this is to use keystroke commands instead of mouse during performance

calculator:
route - send error messages
#
itoa (int to ascii)
prepend set
(value)

    open
sfplay (play loaded sound files)
simple audio chains

max/msp doesn't like the laptop going into standby

lists
unpack
- to unpack a list of numbers into a list of inputs
unpack 0 0 0 0 0 0 -> 0 is initial value also

makenote does the unpack internally

pack 0 0
- 2 inputs -> 1
47 57
pack 0 0
prepend set
47 57

name of ch (this can be something else)
send notes
receive notes
- these two: pack the list first to send to sendnotes

* scale is pc bandwidth processor power intensive
so you use scale to invert the volume on freeform input square
so volume decreases as cursor decreases
default is volume increases as cursor decreases which is opposite to how we visually see it to what we hear

scale 0 127 127 0
scalle 0 127 127 0
the fifth argument is for exponential scale value

send maximum
- right click to see if this name 'maximum' has been used before in the patch

send, receive or s, r (shortcut names)
trigger t
p double_click - patch "double_click" -> a patch within a patch
counter - can have multiple values and also multiple variables

set $1
jam $1
max $1

object ~ is msp object not max object

---

for next session, do up to tutorial 20 - max tutorials, + up to tutorial 10 msp tutorials

refernce manual - max object thesaurus

cycling74 alias folder -> contains external patches library
extras folder -> contains tools which appear in tools menu

examples -> these are patches

next session is April 9th

Theatre, Quay Arts, Sea Street, Newport Harbour, Isle of Wight PO30 5BD

Saturday 19th Februrary 2005 10am - 5pm

Ivan Pope presents A Locative Day Out

The satellite based Global Positioning System (GPS) allows us to record
basic information about our location, direction, altitude and speed.
Using small hand held devices, artists can record and interpret this
data to create mapping, locative, durational and other works. GPS allows
us to take back knowledge of our whereabouts, and to annotate this
knowledge, or to reuse it as we wish.

Artists can use access to this locative data that forms the background
to all our lives, to add another layer of information to work. Whether
we want accurate information or chaotic disinformation, the gps
satellites transmit unceasingly 24 hours a day, not caring whether we
make use of their datastreams or not. We can anonymously take up their
offering and convert it to human data.

This one day live workshop will introduce the basic functioning of the
GPS and demonstrate GPS devices and software along with digital cameras.
Participants will be able to use GPS devices and digital cameras in the
field to create their own personal mappings of the locality. These
mappings will form the basis for a workshop in creating combined and
annotated maps and images.

We will spend the day looking at software and hardware and discussing
psychogeographic and locative issues while making our own maps, playing
gps games and adding to the global store of waypoints.

Workshop to include:

Introduction to handheld gps units, cameras and software
Briefing on site for mapping project
2 hour walk to make maps and take pictures
Workshop in production of mappings and using images with maps
Production of personalised mappings
Ends with introduction to gps games

Saturday 19th Februrary 2005 10am 5pm
Ivan Pope presents A Locative Day Out

Schedule:

9.45 Coffee
10.00am Introduction to GPS units, cameras and software - Ivan Pope
11.15 Demonstration of the system at Quay Arts
11.30am Group journeys
2.45pm Meet in caf for tea
3.00pm Discussion of group experiences and demonstration of software Ivan Pope
5.00pm Ends

Please note:

Participants should bring recording devices of their choice such as a notebook or sketchbook and pen/pencil; video camera; digital camera; phone camera; PDA; needle and thread feel free to be as creative as you like. The GPS systems we will use will be Garmins we encourage those of you who own GPS devices to bring them along (we will have to check software compatibility).

Please bring with you any ideas for a journey on Isle of Wight that can be completed in around 2hrs.

Bus fares and petrol will need to be covered by participants.

Lunch will need to be provided by participants

We look forward to meeting you on 19th and if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact Helen Sloan, Director, SCAN, ArtSway, Station Road, Sway SO41 6BA
From the advent of the first electric instruments, the phonograph, radio, telephone, and subsequent electronic and digital inventions, the approaches to technologies relevant to the art of sound have been limited only by the imagination of the musician. In recent years, there seems to have been a proliferation of studies relating to music incorporating these technologies However, the investigation of such a varied musical repertoire raises a number of issues that the EMS conferences wish to examine.
