Darren Hayes' new album "This Delicate Thing We’ve Made" released in August

Darren Hayes of Savage Garden fame, has been working on a solo album called "This Delicate Thing We've Made". It's due for release on August 21st. Check out the video clip on his website for "On the verge of something wonderful" - an uplifting tune sure to be heard on dancefloors around the world. Apparently one of the instruments is a Fairlight CMI synth - nice to see he's supporting such a fine & influential Australian musical instrument. He's touring UK/Scotland in September / October and will be back for an Australian tour in mid October, but if you can't wait that long, he'll be in Sydney at HUM (Oxford St) on Saturday 4th August - his myspace page has latest dates and more details.

(H)earat Shulaym (Note in the Margin) - Independent Journal for Contemporary Art

(H)earat Shulaym (Note in the Margin) is an Independent Journal of Contemporary Art and Literature published by the group of artists Sala-Manca. The purpose of the magazine is to temporaly shift the gaze of the "reader" from the dominant culture, which, for the group members is mostly a marginal culture. The aim is to expose works from artists from different fields that were conceptualized far from main existing trends. This magazine is published without advertisments and without any official support.

The aim of (H)Earat Shulaym – Journal for Contemporary Art and Heara (comment) events (multidisciplinary events for contemporary art) is to meet new trends on art, artists and public, through the creation of new ways of art exhibition and creation from those that the artistic mainstream institutions propose. The development of this independent work in Jerusalem is a step of the process of deconstructing the centralist Israeli Art map and in the creation of new centers that are independent from the traditional art centers and institutions. In these two projects more than 160 artists took part and more than 230 art works were shown and published.

RENEWING THE ANARCHIST TRADITION - A Scholarly Conference

The eighth edition of the Renewing the Anarchist Tradition (RAT) conference, sponsored by the Institute for Anarchist Studies, once again aims to provide a participatory and scholarly space in which to reexamine, reinvigorate, and make relevant the social and political tradition of anarchism.

At previous conferences, presenters have proposed topics that ranged from the character of social change to the ongoing relevance of categories such as class, community, and labor; from the changing shape of the state and capital to emergent forms of both domination and resistance in a globalizing world; from the character of twenty-
first-century technology to the functions and potentials of anti-authoritarian art and propaganda; and from anarchism's relation to geopolitical concerns such as terrorism and war to its ability to grapple with issues of identity such as race, gender, and sexuality.

Read more for the Calls for Proposals or visit http://anarchiststudies.org/node/146 for more details. http://www.homemadejam.org/renew has archives of previous year's conferences.

KOG 30/10/2003 phone interview with Mark from KOG label.

http://www.kog.co.nz/

this is the full transcript for reference. so excuse the ums & ahhs & spelling / transcription errors and incoherency on my part.. I had a shorter, edited version on Pulse Radio site a few years back but I've lost the copy and the content's changed on their site now.

Kog=Mark
K.=Kath/AliaK

Kog Yes we are just running around – meeting people day and night
– having meetings – looking forward to getting home and having some
sleep

K. Yes it takes a lot out of you a bit doesn't it

Kog Yes it does

K. Pretty draining

K. Have you been having fun and going around to all the festivals and that?

Kog Oh yes we've been having a blast – only thing I'm bummed about
is we missed the 4ZZZ thing up in Brisbane

K. Oh market day! Yes I heard it was really good

Kog. Yes, one of our acts, Shapeshifter, played. I was going to go
up but I had a hiphop conference that same weekend and I had to go to
that so it's all good.

K. I am originally from Brisbane so I chat with a lot of people up
there still. They said 'Shapeshifter' was really great - like they all
loved it.

Kog Oh excellent!

substrate processing app images

I've been trying out some processing apps - Substrate is one of my favourites. written by j.tarbell from complexification.net. it creates a generative image from colours in a specified source image using a simple algorithm.

I used this photo of Auckland countryside as the source image. here's the results:

The Long Now Foundation

"In the early 90s a group of people were attracted to each other because of their shared interest in the idea of time, and in the idea of responsibility for the future. This group of people came to call themselves the Long Now Foundation."

"We felt that there was a need to create some new form of human thinking about Time. We were all aware that everything was getting faster."

"We were also aware as we looked around that most of the ambitions and objectives of people in corporations and in government, even in education had become closer and closer in terms of time so corporations were living in fear of their quarterly results and politicians were living in fear of the next opinion poll. There seemed to be an ever - decreasing horizon into the future and very little encouragement from people in any direction to lay long term plans. No politician wants to start on a plan that doesn't yield results pretty quickly at least within his or her term of office. The worst thing of all is if it yields results in the opposition's term of office and of course the media don't help this by always focusing on things that seem like blue sky projects and criticising them as being stupidly idealistic and pointless."

"We thought that there was first of all the need for an organisation that would celebrate that kind of thinking, that would ally with it, that would support it, that would encourage it and in fact would try to do it itself."

-- Brian Eno from Brian Eno Seminar on The Long Now
