The Digital Artists Handbook

The Digital Artists Handbook is an up to date, reliable and accessible source of information that introduces you to different tools, resources and ways of working related to digital art. The goal of the Handbook is to be a signpost, a source of practical information and content that bridges the gap between new users and the platforms and resources that are available, but not always very accessible. The Handbook will be slowly filled with articles written by invited artists and specialists, talking about their tools and ways of working. Some articles are introductions to tools, others are descriptions of methodologies, concepts and technologies. When discussing software, the focus of this Handbook is on Free/Libre Open Source Software. The Handbook aims to give artists information about the available tools but also about the practicalities related to Free Software and Open Content, such as collaborative development and licenses. All this to facilitate exchange between artists, to take away some of the fears when it comes to open content licenses, sharing code, and to give a perspective on various ways of working and collaborating. -- info via the DAH index page

South Coast - Brighton (UK) hip hop documentary by Will Jewell

Watch the video

I saw "South Coast" a documentary about Brighton (UK)'s hip hop community by Will Jewell last saturday night at the Jerusalem Cinematheque as part of the British Film Festival. I thought the film was a great balance of original roots of hip hop, respecting the US origins, whilst highlighting the original crews from the local Brighton community and featuring some of the up & coming artists also. a great snap shot into Brighton hip hop. it feels similar to Australian hip hop in some ways.

I wrote some names during the film so I could find out about them later. (hard to read my writing so hopefully I have these right!)

Electro-Rock Night At The Step Inn - Super Massive + Elation + Dance In Circles DJs

Super Massive were awarded the Best Alternative Artist Award at the 2007 MusicOz Awards in November, for their evocative and as-yet-unreleased synth/rock song “Fists”, which you can sneak preview on the band’s myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/supermassivesounds.

The band is the songwriting co-project of drummer/composer Glenn Abbott (formerly of ARIA winning band Machine Gun Fellatio & his own solo project The Bryan Ferrysexual Experience) and singer/writer Malina Hamilton-Smith.

Together with electric bass genius John D. Young (Chuck Berry, Marcia Hines, Vanda & Young) and talented young guitarist Marc Malouf, the four deliver a powerful and entertaining show that seamlessly blends loops, synths, electro sounds, deep funkiness and the lustiness of a full-blooded rock band, in creative and catchy, pop-structured songs.

BEN FROST + CHRIS CORSANO + LAWRENCE ENGLISH microMONO at the IMA, 19 January, 2008 (Brisbane)

That's right, Iceland resident and current heartthrob of the European post-electronic sound BEN FROST is headed to Brisbane for his first show in many years! His album Theory Of Machines has created quite a stir and this, added to the recently repressed Steelwound (his ROOM40 debut) seems to be only further proof that Frost is really onto something unique with his densely textured works.

Not only that, but we can also now confirm that percussionist CHRIS CORSANO will be joining the bill. From rolling with the Free-folk scene (Sunburned Hand of The Man/MV +EE, Tower Recordings), through Free Jazz (Evan Parker/John Edwards + Paul Flaherty), Noise (Vampire Belt/Jim O/Thurston Moore/Dream Aktion Unit +++) and onto the big stages playing in Björk's live band, Corsano has lit sparks of invention in every instance. His solo sets are jaw-dropping displays of not only technical prowess but advanced musicality.

LAWRENCE ENGLISH joins these two monsters of sound to deliver a set in celebration of the launch of his latest record on Sirr Records - 'IT'S UP TO US TO LIVE'. Following a 5 week stint in Europe in November and December 2007, he'll deliver a slab of new sound and debut some new pieces from future releases due mid 2008.

In all an evening not to be missed (!!!) at the IMA on Saturday January 19th from 8pm - it's going to be dense, delicate, fierce and loud! Something for everyone!
