Fashioning Technology Showcase at the Cyber Palace

In 2022, Fashioning Technology workshops were organised by the Cyber Palace in Brisbane, creating works as a mix of eTextiles, fashion, art and technology. The exhibition featured soft circuitry and textile works.

The Fashioning Technology Showcase, held on Friday 24 February 2023, featured talks and presentations from eTextiles and creative technology experts such as Mika Satomi and Steph Piper, as well as artist talks and an exhibition from participating artists, makers, creative technologists, designers and textile artists such as: Suzon Fuks, Sharka Bosakova, Cathy Godwin, Felicity Clarke, Leah Emery, Rebecca Healy, Yulia Bouka and Tara Pattenden.

A copy of the catalogue featuring works from the workshop participants is also available via the Cyber Palace

bio-string bio-plastic bio-fabricating sustainable materials test

for my uni art project, I wanted to try some bio textiles processes using sustainable materials given the large amounts of waste and energy used in textiles and materials production. A classmate recommended I try alginate, a seaweed extract often used by dentists for their moulds. I found some recipes for bio-string / bio-plastic / bio-fabricating processes, and also discovered a collection of makers called FabLabs. my project is not strictly a textiles project, but is based on / inspired by string figures, so I was happy to find that this method can be used to create bio-string too. The main ingredients (sodium alginate and calcium chloride) were found at The Red Spon Company, a baking and food supply store in Rosebery, Sydney. They didn't have glicerine, and I check a couple of other stores and couldn't find it also, so didn't include that - one recipe included it and another didn't so I thought it might be optional.

Do Ho Suh's memory rooms

have been discovering and reading about Do Ho Suh's frottage and fabric rooms - like "memory rooms". Lois Weinthal's article in "Textile Technology and Design: From Interior Space to Outer Space" relates them to Anni Albers' "The Pliable Plane: textiles in Architecture" essay, as "third skins" after Suh described his relation of wallpaper as "clothing the house". enjoying these explorations this weekend

am starting to appreciate the sculpture side of class too and see it might be more useful/related to textiles work (than painting - could do painting via short courses/weekends if not traveling). this textile technology stuff is pretty cool, would like to delve more into it. most of the research seems to be in UK though. am looking for some in Aus

reSkin Wearable Technology Lab & Coded Cloth was a lab + exhibition showing wearable technology projects in 2007/8. It was curated by Melinda Rackham.

Stitching off the Page (fancy edgings) class

last saturday (31st jan) I went along to Alex Falkiner's "Stitching off the Page (fancy edgings)" class in marrickville. it was a lovely afternoon learning new stitches and techniques for the edges of fabric. I really wanted to learn her "netting" stitch and just block out a few hours to spend stitching. great to speak to others too

some photos of the "in progress" parts of the stitches for future reference. I felt I was having a bad day stitching - extra slow and making lots of mistakes (which given my state that week after the recent surgery/recovery wasn't too surprising), but I'll try these again when feeling better.

the netting stitch is like blanket stitch but you stitch into the air / where the loops join instead of into the fabric

Join Codasign Director Emilie Giles for a talk around eTextiles and wearables, introducing you to the world of conductive threads, fabrics and yarns as well as projects within which these materials feature.

From knitted radios to bio-feedback garments, the talk will focus on the current field and its future, with case studies of brilliant work. There will be some small swatches of examples for you to look at and interact with as well as materials for you to examine and play with.

After the talk there will be the opportunity to ask questions and network.

Make a triangular flag or pennon [meaning a personal ensign, derived from the Latin penna meaning a wing or a feather] preferably using a piece of pre-loved cloth. Stitch on it a word or a phrase or a sentence that might act as a wish for peace or an acknowledgement of beauty, imply a sense of stillness or simply something that gives you solace. It can be as brief or as long as you like. A haiku, a snatch of song, a word that takes you where you want to be. Attach ties to the tethering end of your flag.

It is important the flags be made from natural fibre fabrics as they will remain in place following prayer flag tradition, to dispense blessings and good wishes to the four winds…any shreds that part company from the whole must be bio-degradable. Additional decorations such as stone or glass beads, shell or wooden buttons are welcome, but please, no plastic.

One of Yeiser Art Center's most engaging, innovative & colorful international exhibits, Fantastic Fibers is an inspirational "must see" for quilters and textile art enthusiasts across the globe.

In November 2013, Paducah was bestowed the honor of being designated a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Creative Cities Network in the area of Crafts & Folk Art. Paducah's international connections in the area of quilting and fiber arts and Yeiser's long standing commitment to Fantastic Fibers attributed to this esteemed title. We thank all our participants over the years, both home and abroad, for helping make Paducah "distinctively creative."

Jurors: The 2015 Fantastic Fibers jurors are Marcia Young, Publisher & Editor-in-Chief of Fiber Art Now magazine, and Laverne Zabielski, renowned Kentucky fiber artist, creator of Truly Wearable art and noted author.

It’s not every day you line up at a cloakroom and hand over your ticket to Tilda Swinton, who hurries back towards the rails to fetch your stuff and delicately presents it to you. But that was what happened at Swinton and fashion historian Olivier Saillard’s Cloakroom performance in Florence this week, where the audience were invited to leave things throughout the play, which Tilda then contemplated and interacted with, from her licking a jacket to throwing herself full force on top of a coat and burying her face in a hood, in a gesture of bringing out the poetry in ‘ordinary’ clothes.
