Second Life is a 3d virtual environment created by Linden Lab (R) which has captured the attention of researchers and teachers from around the world from a variety of disciplines.

This workshop aims to improve the understanding of Second Life as a Learning and Research environment. It will bring 35 researchers together to collaborate, discuss and workshop diverse topics related to research and learning in Second Life. We will pursue a full-day schedule in which participants will discuss their work and interests on four different topics: learning in Second Life, integrated learning, the contributions of research to the community and ethical research methods. How can we better enable learning in this sphere? How can we better enable research?

Our honored keynote will be Pathfinder Linden

Researchers are requested to submit papers and short biography to slworkshop08@gmail.com, which will be selected and distributed amongst participants before the workshop. First invitations will be offered to those who provide full papers for consideration.

These papers have two purposes: first is to provide a common platform for understanding our research and teaching and second submitted papers may be considered for publication in an edited volume being produced in relation to the workshop, or possibly in peer reviewed publication derived from the workshop (these are currently under discussion).

Subsequent invitations will be made based upon research/teaching statement and biography with priority given to people submitting full papers. If you are interested in participating, please send an email containing your information to slworkshop08@gmail.com.

Decisions will be made by August 1st, barring incident. There is a limit of 35 participants at the physical meeting; the event will be simulcast into Second Life which will be organized by Jason Nolan.

We welcome professionals, faculty and graduate students to participate.

This workshop is sponsored by Linden Lab, creators of Second Life, and is organized by Jeremy Hunsinger, Rochelle Mazar, Aleks Krotoski and Jason Nolan. Lunch, coffee breaks and the room is included in participation. (And you'll probably get a t-shirt!)

The Women In Games conference encourages research and seeks to promote careers for women within the games industry. If games are to become a true sibling medium to music and cinema, the industry needs greater balance in its audience and its workforce. The Women In Games conference takes place from 10-12th September 2008 and welcomes participants from both industry and academia, providing a forum for presentation and discussion of issues relating to all aspects of women's involvement in games, including game development, game playing and women as portrayed within games.
Although this conference is concerned with women and games please note that men are also very welcome to participate! The industry needs a meaningful dialogue between the sexes as it moves forward.

RENEWING THE ANARCHIST TRADITION
A Scholarly Conference
November 2-4, 2007 in Montpelier, Vermont

http://anarchiststudies.org/node/146

The eighth edition of the Renewing the Anarchist Tradition (RAT)
conference, sponsored by the Institute for Anarchist Studies, once
again aims to provide a participatory and scholarly space in which to
reexamine, reinvigorate, and make relevant the social and political
tradition of anarchism.

Each year, RAT brings together anarchists, anti-authoritarians, and
libertarians who want to critically engage both the tradition itself
and the world in which we live. Participants and presenters at the
conference thereby contribute to developing a more rigorous
contemporary theoretical framework for anarchism as well as a
stronger basis from which anti-authoritarian movements can organize
and resist.

In a historical moment characterized overwhelmingly by war,
exploitation, forced displacement, dispossession, and environmental
devastation, it might seem strange to spend a peaceful fall weekend
in conversation with friends and comrades in Vermont. But we believe
that the contemporary context makes it more important than ever to
foster a space in which to collectively and honestly appraise the
strengths as well as weaknesses of different anarchist practices,
platforms, convictions, dogmas, truisms, and theories in helping us
to understand and ultimately transform the layered systems of
domination and oppression that structure it. We also see RAT as a
place to discuss and share theoretical tools from beyond the
anarchist tradition(s) that can add to building more sustainable
social movements and practices, and eventually a world characterized
by freedom, justice, and dignity for all.

RAT aims to nurture and support a new generation of anti-
authoritarian public intellectuals from different backgrounds and
experiences. So when we describe it as "a scholarly conference," we
are referring to a quality of the presentations and discussions--not
to some professional identity of the participants. You do not have to
be an academic to attend or present at RAT. All you have to do is be
ready to actively participate in the conversations and debates, as
peers who are creating the conference space together. In the past,
RAT has served as a forum for organizers, scholars, writers, artists,
educators, publishers, and students from a range of anarchist and
libertarian left tendencies to come together to engage in challenging
yet respectful dialogue. Participants have observed that RAT offers a
distinctive social environment in which long-term conversations and
relationships between anti-authoritarians from various places and
political contexts can be built.

At previous conferences, presenters have proposed topics that ranged
from the character of social change to the ongoing relevance of
categories such as class, community, and labor; from the changing
shape of the state and capital to emergent forms of both domination
and resistance in a globalizing world; from the character of twenty-
first-century technology to the functions and potentials of anti-
authoritarian art and propaganda; and from anarchism's relation to
geopolitical concerns such as terrorism and war to its ability to
grapple with issues of identity such as race, gender, and sexuality.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
(Due by or before September 1, 2007)

http://anarchiststudies.org/node/146

We are once again accepting proposals for a limited number of
presentations. In addition, we will be curating a series of panels
that build on previous conversations and provoke even more dynamic
debate than at past conferences.

If you are interested in presenting, please take a look at the RAT
archive (currently at http://www.homemadejam.org/renew) to get a
sense of the topics that have been explored in the past. If you feel
alienated when you look at this list, or think that important issues
that should be considered through an anarchist lens have been left
out, do not panic or decide not to attend. Please send us a proposal.
We particularly encourage non-academics, working people, women,
indigenous people, people of color, queer and trans people, and
others frequently marginalized in scholarly life to submit proposals.

Each proposal should include: a succinct presentation title; a
maximum 150-word description of your presentation and the question or
topic you wish to address; a maximum 50-word description of yourself;
and your full name and e-mail.

You can submit multiple proposals, and proposals for panels are also
welcome. Please note, however, that we will be choosing from the
proposals by September 15, and not every proposal will be selected.

If your proposal is accepted, you are automatically registered. All
presenters must pay the registration fee, since RAT has no funding
other than all of us contributing to make this space possible.

Send your proposal(s), by or before September 1, to:
rat-presentations@anarchiststudies.org.

REGISTRATION
(Starting on September 15, 2007)

RAT registration, limited to 150 people, will open on September 15.
All presenters are automatically registered, but like everyone else,
they must pay the registration fees in full by or before October 15.
RAT has no outside or independent funding, so everyone who attends
contributes financially to making this conference possible. Those who
register for RAT can also book a table(s) for bookstores, infoshops,
magazines, and other projects.

Once registration opens, we will offer a sliding-scale registration
for the following three options:

    1. Registration and five meals (for locals and
others not requiring housing): $45 to $65
2. Registration, five meals, and 2 nights in
shared dorm room: $105 to $125
3. Registration, five meals, and 2 nights in
single dorm room: $155 to $180

Also, a limited number of partial scholarships will be
available to subsidize RAT conference fees for those
with financial need. These scholarships, as in the
past, will be made possible because of the generosity
of other RAT participants who can afford to pay the
higher end (or more!) of our sliding scale.

SCHEDULE

RAT will open this year with a single panel on the evening of Friday,
November 2, followed by a full day of presentations, panels, and a
party on Saturday, November 3, and will wrap up with more
presentations and panels until about 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 4.
All presenters and participants should plan on attending the full
conference, since RAT is meant as an extended conversation.

We are renting space at a small college in Montpelier, Vermont, for
meeting rooms, tabling, five meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner on
Saturday; breakfast and lunch on Sunday), and dorm rooms. On Saturday
night, we'll be using the Langdon Street Cafe for a performance
(rants! confessions! diatribes! music!) and socializing space.

"Autonomy is not a fixed, essential state. Like gender, autonomy is
created through its performance, by doing/becoming; it is a political
practice. To become autonomous is to refuse authoritarian and
compulsory cultures of separation and hierarchy through embodied
practices of welcoming difference... Becoming autonomous is a
political position for it thwarts the exclusions of proprietary
knowledge and jealous hoarding of resources, and replaces the social
and economic hierarchies on which these depend with a politics of
skill exchange, welcome, and collaboration. Freely sharing these with
the domination and hegemony of the master's rule." - subRosa Collective

.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
In a globalised world, dominated by communication technologies, with
countless questions concerning a future that affects our everyday
life, it is essential to make this analysis and to consider, from
different perspectives, how our polyhedral, altered reality is being
effected by the widespread use of new technology as a support for new
ideas and possibilities that are almost infinite. We need to
investigate how this occurs in different societies and cultures and
to propose models that may go beyond what has been known until now.

The First International Art Tech Media Congress has been set up in
order to reflect upon and analyse questions currently being raised
about art and new technological media within an international context.

Within this context, an intensive debate needs to take place on the
influence and transformations that new media is producing in art,
there needs to be a greater understanding of the foundations for more
effective cooperation between the different sectors linked to digital
art, and proposals need to be devised for the development of national
and international collaborative networks in order to improve
production, research, exhibition and promotion.

Last year, Art Tech Media 06 encounters had been held at nine Spanish
museums, and given the great participation and the opinions
collected, its seems clear that this is an ideal time to celebrate
the First International Art Tech Media Conference. It represents a
great opportunity to hold a transversal debate in order to devise
proposals that will lead to greater and better coordination among the
different sectors of art, aimed at strengthening its development.

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR AND WORKSHOP ON URBAN CULTURE
Arte-Polis: Creative Culture and the Making of Place
Bandung, 21- 23 July 2006

Organized by:
Department of Architecture
School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development
Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB), Indonesia

Seminar Introduction
For the last three decades there has been a convergence between the
realms of cultural and economic development. In the process broadly
termed 'cultural economy', ideas and artistic qualities contribute
towards a new development paradigm. In addition, a wide range of
activities are now concerned with the production and marketing of
goods and services that are infused with aesthetic and symbolic
cultural content. This phenomenon has shifted development approaches
from a Fordist economic regime based on manufacturing to one that
places high value on human creativity. Several scholars have noted
that this type of cultural economy is characterized by the emergence
of a ‘creative class’ who build their main activities on knowledge
and creativity. In terms of the built environment, this paradigm
shift to a creative economy has in turn influenced the formulation of
policy and practice of urban development.

In an era of globalization, activities of the creative economy such
as fashion, film, television, theater, music, dance, visual arts,
design, architecture, advertising, publishing, multimedia and
information technology, have contributed significantly to local
economy, community life and the creation of places in cities. Such
cities have taken advantage of the trend in natural agglomeration of
creative industries, not only as a result of economic efficiency but
of innovative synergies unleashed in industrial clusters, given that
information, imagination, opinions and cultural sensibilities are
transmitted through them. This agglomeration of design and
knowledge-intensive industries attain place-specific competitive
advantages by utilizing local symbolic culture, which becomes
embedded in products that are value-added and unique in character.
Together with this trend, carefully designed places in cities that
offer life-style choices and amenities emerge as an important
strategy for attracting talented people. These cultural places become
hubs for creative communities, given that groups of creative
professionals tend to cluster in places that provide not only the
kind of jobs they seek but also the quality of life amenities they
prefer. However, there remains a gap between global and local
settings, in which a framework is needed to situate the cities of
developing countries within this global phenomenon. Equally important
is an understanding of how local knowledge and creativity in
different cultural and economic contexts, particularly of cities in
developing countries with their informal economy, contribute to this
continuing discourse at both theoretical and practical levels.

This Seminar will critically debate and discuss the following issues:
(1) How and to what extent does the creative economy influence urban
development?
(2) How does this phenomenon differ in the cultural and economic
contexts of cities in developing countries from those of developed
countries?
(3) How can creative-based cultural industries and activities be
managed, planned and designed to improve the quality of places for
people living in cities?

The Seminar’s theme of 'Creative Culture and the Making of Place'
will be elaborated within these Parallel Sessions:
(A) Theoretical Discourses (B) Community and
Private Initiatives
(C) Institutional Capacity Building (D) Planning Policy
and Place-Making

The objective of this two-day Seminar is to bring together scholars,
community groups, decision-makers and professionals from all
disciplines concerned with the quality of life in cities
(architecture, arts, cultural/development studies, design, economics,
geography, planning etc) to share international knowledge and
experience regarding current issues, best practices and policy
implications of the relationship between creative culture and
place-making.

Workshop and Exhibition
The Workshop on the third day aims at proposing place-specific and
action-oriented interventions by harnessing the creative potential of
Bandung, the fourth largest city in Indonesia with a population of
2.5 million people. Through active participation by a wide range of
stakeholders, this Workshop will formulate visions and recommend
possible implementation of a sustainable and strategic plan for
activities of the creative economy clustering around Dago Street, a
major historic boulevard in Bandung. Within the past decade, this
street has undergone dramatic changes in uses toward more
culture-based urban development characterized by the presence of
clothing factory outlets, design-conscious stores, cafes, galleries,
educational institutions and media/entertainment/performing art
activities. This development has not come without problems for the
city and its residents. Despite the potentials and problems, there
has been lack of a clear vision as how to plan these creative
activities into an integrated cultural district that promotes strong
local character, social cohesiveness and economic sustainability. The
Workshop will address these issues through an intensive one-day
design charette. An Exhibition on urban culture and place-making will
also be held in conjunction with this International Seminar and
Workshop.

About the Conference

Recent years have seen a strong interest among academics, policy
makers, activists, business and other practitioners on open
collaboration and access as a driver of creativity. In some areas,
such as free software / open source, sustainable business models have
emerged that are holding their own against more traditional,
proprietary software industries. In the sciences, the notions of open
science and open data demonstrate the strong tradition of openness in
the academic community that, despite its past successes, is
increasingly under threat. And open access journals and other open
content provide inspiring examples of collaborative creativity and
participatory access, such as Wikipedia, while still in search of
models to ensure sustainability.

There are clear links between these areas of openness: open content
often looks explicitly towards open source software for business
models, and open science provides through its history a glimpse of
the potential of openness, how it can work, as well as a warning of
the threats it may face. Finally, open collaboration is closely
linked to access to knowledge issues, enabling active participation
rather than passive consumption especially in developing countries.

Despite these clear links, there has been surprisingly little
thoughtful analysis of this convergence, or of the real value of the
common aspect of open collaboration. In particular, while open source
software - due to its strong impact on business and on bridging the
digital divide - has drawn much attention, it may provide false hopes
for the sustainability of openness in other areas of content that
need careful examination. The conference -- FM10 Openness: Code,
science and content - Making collaborative creativity sustainable --
provides a platform for such analysis and discussion, resulting in
concrete proposals for sustainable models for open collaboration in
creative domains.

The Conference will draw on the experience of First Monday as the
foremost online, peer-reviewed academic journal covering these issues
since May 1996. Not only has First Monday published numerous papers
by leading scholars on the topics of open collaboration, open access,
and open content in its various forms, it is itself an example of
open collaboration in practice: for a decade, the journal has been
published on a purely voluntary basis, with no subscription fees,
advertising, sponsorship or other revenues. The success of First
Monday is demonstrated by thousands of readers around the world,
downloading hundreds of thousands of papers each month.

Monday at ejv@uic.edu. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!

Contemporary Music Review (Routledge)
Call for papers:
The body/technology-instrument/technology paradigm.

We invite papers from writers reflecting on sound in relation to the
body/technology; from anyone who attempts to define and/or critically
examine
threshold conditions of instrument and performer; writers who are keen to
challenge con- or discontinuities of instrument and performer, be it in the
form of laptop improvisation, interactive sound environments, 3d cave
installations, sonic architecture, or other performance situations.

In an era in which technology has impacted immensely on ways in which
instrumental music is being performed, indeed in which the role of the
instrument, if not notions of the instrument itself, have become radically
altered, we want to examine the instrument's position as well as the role of
the performer.

The body/technology - instrument/technology coupling or decoupling is
something that can be, and needs to be explored from various angles. Such
discussion invariably leads us to think about what we consider an instrument
to be in technologically mediated environments, in particular if we keep in
mind that the word's origin suggests notions of "instruction" (from Latin:
instruere): who instructs or who/what is instructed by whom?

* Do we see the instrument as extension, retraction or subversion of
the
body?
* Is the instrument one that brings the body into existence, or one
that
denies bodily existence?
* What are the implications of technological environments on the
instrument-performer relation?
* Does the body become re-figured and re-inscribed by technology?
These are only a few of the questions that may arise; other exploratory
paths
that elucidate aspects of the body/technology-instrument/technology
paradigms
are highly encouraged.

For this discussion papers may rejoice in the liminal, the erotic, or the
incestuous, they may celebrate touch, if not the self-touch, and may move
beyond notions of the instrument as extension of the body in performance.

Papers from disciplines as varied as music, philosophy, anthropology,
sociology, biology, informatics or architecture will be of interest.

Abstracts of around 300 words should be sent to the guest editor by the 31st
of July 2005.
Full papers will be due at the end of September 2005.

____________________________________________________________
Please note:
Papers are accepted only in English.

Submission of a paper to this journal will be taken to imply that it
represents original work not previously published, that it is not being
considered elsewhere for publication, and that if accepted for publication
it
will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any language, without
the
consent of the editors and publishers.

All queries should be directed to:
