from Liquid Architecture's About page

Liquid Architecture, Australia's premier sound-arts festival, celebrates its eighth consecutive year with concerts, artist talks, workshops, forums, live performances, exhibitions, installations, audio-visuals and recorded work. Featuring our most imaginative musicians, composers, film-sound designers and media artists in a sense-specific feast for the ears.

What is 'Sound Art'?

"For many, it refers to sound-based art work (or at least art work where the principal focus is on sound) across the broad gamut of performance, installation and broadcast contexts, which departs from both traditional musical instrumentation and notational methods and frequently employs electronic media. Others may see it as an intersecting space with roots in post-Cageian music practice, or indeed 'post-phonographic' music practice, and installation art."
-- Julian Knowles then Professor of Music and Head of the School of Music and Drama at the University of Wollongong, in an article entitled Sound Practice, Sound Thesis in RealTime No68, August / September 2005

What is Liquid Architecture?

Liquid Architecture is a sense specific festival, as opposed to art form specific. Occurring annually since 2000, Liquid Architecture celebrates the diverse methods of sound making and sound theory. It is our belief that listening is a vital activity, and one that is often overlooked within the dominance of visual media in our environment.

What will I hear?

A key objective is the promotion of artists practicing on the periphery of music and sound culture, particularly those with an experimental aesthetic and a critical approach to (media) cultures. The artistic content of the festival focuses upon and privileges sound practice in all its manifestations but, due to the cross disciplinary potential of sound, many other art practices are included in the festival. Liquid Architecture focuses on any and all art forms involving particular emphasis on the auditory, including an exciting mix of musical performance, AV presentations and installation work, along with a strong critical element involving panels, workshops and artist talks.

Who's it for?

Now coming into its eighth consecutive year, Liquid Architecture strives to combine the fragmented communities in which sound arts practices occurs, striving for cross disciplinary appreciation and critique. The practical objective of this strategy is to popularise and publicise sound culture through greater aggregate audience size and a higher profile, and to make sound culture more accessible to the community, particularly to youth and student audiences. Audiences currently include those engaged with contemporary creative practice, sound arts practitioners, music industry professionals, electronic music concert goers, academics, cultural theorists and students (post & undergraduate), youth audiences and enthusiasts of adventurous popular music.

Liquid Architecture aims to popularise sound culture, particularly with young/emerging content producers within Australia's active student culture, in order to build not only future audiences but also future artists. Our rationale reflects an intense engagement with specialist and broader cultures, and the desire to make a contribution to those cultures. Sound practice is often cross disciplinary and the festival should reflect that, not only in the work presented but in the broad range of audiences it attracts.

The opportunities to network with national and international artists are an important means of generating future initiatives and cross cultural collaborations. The community is being exposed to some of the most exciting explorations occurring within sound culture that also happen to intersect with the media and fine arts. The exposure generated by Liquid Architecture is crucial in developing new audiences for the many discreet sound and experimental music communities currently operating around the country, and internationally.

Who's responsible?

Liquid Architecture is curated by practicing sound artists. Directed by Nat Bates, who heads the ((tRansMIT)) sound collective, and co-directed with Ben Byrne and Shannon O'Neill from alias frequencies and Lawrence English from ROOM40. The Artefacts of Australian Experimental Music CD launch is presented by Shame File Music.

Ben and Shannon have fostered a Sydney home at the Performance Space, Lawrence works closely with the Brisbane Powerhouse, and in Melbourne the festival is once again supported by RMIT Union Arts and returns again to the Arts House at the North Melbourne Town Hall.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its principal arts funding and advisory body.
The Sydney season is supported by Arts NSW, Melbourne by Arts Victoria.
Pauline Oliveros and Ione's visit has been made possible through the Alt.Music Festival under The Audio Foundation New Zealand, and in co-operation with the Fulbright association.
Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock and Dave Philips' visit is supported by Pro Helvetia and dual plover.
Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine's visit is supported by the French Embassy and Alliance Francaise.

After the gynormous SYDNEY GYPSY & BALKAN BASH of April 19, the Uber Lingua Abercrombie continue to push cutting edge culture and linguistic diversity into Sydney's party scene... The events are now pretty much monthly thangs and the forthcoming edition UBER SYSTEM LIBERATED! will not let the standards slip... As the winter months approach the motivation to have more stuff inside is evident. Together with the Figure 8 crew who help out with sound, we launched our new 'Indoor stage' at the last party and this also allowed us to have LIVE stuff after midnight (the Beer garden has sound restrictions)... a 3-member version of the Gypsy Dub Sound System used it to great affect...

At UBER SYSTEM LIBERATED! Brisbane's Potato Master returns to be part of an Sound System performance with selector bP and Sri Lankan MC Pataphysics. This trio performed together at the Sydney Festival 'Festival First night' space by Uber Lingua in Angel Place... They are joined by Sydney based turntablist Ability, so it's a tri-state configuration... Gong Baby are Indonesian percussion and instrumentalists Deva Permana & Efen Jaenudin working with producer and DJ Jonah. The combination is a precision mix of electronics and urban beats fusing with ancient eastern aesthetics... frankly speaking it's quite electric! Gondwana are heralded Didgeridoo player Charlie McMahon (previously working under the moniker Gondwanaland), Mashy P and a keyboard player named Paul. Charlie has recorded on albums by Midnight Oil, Janes Addiction, Hisashi Shirahama, Ed Kuepper & John Williamson to name a few... This project takes his exploration of Didjeri-bone and FX pedals further... atone are ex-Mancunian Andrew Fitzgerald and Steve Stanislavsky, they produce a never ending stockpile of deep electronic dub and the act has become a mainstay of the Sydney electronic music scene since first appearing with their 5 star reviewed atonement album in 1996.

DJs for the night include Turkish SBS broadcaster Evrim, who received a popular response to her set at the SG&BB, so she had to be asked back for another slot. Indian drum and bass DJ Ritual arrives on the Uber Lingua lineup with a strong urge to connect his genetic heritage to his DnB passion. Ritual is no stranger to the Abercrombie after playing many a DnBBQ. Stu Buchanan and the Ollo DJs fulfill a newly formed aspect of the Abercrombie parties. As there's sound restrictions after midnight we've started featuring (dare we say) 'chilled out' listening sets in the beer garden after midnight. Almost all of the Argentinean DJs (and an MC) involved in Uber Lingua are on this bill as part of some random sequence of programming coincidences... Man about town, DubChaman and DJ Spex vs. MC Hernan will inject a higher than normal hot Latin element to this party... The upstairs gallery space will be open from 11pm as always for more adventures...

UBER SYSTEM LIBERATED! will be one chokers party in Uber Lingua's history... If you've missed the past few, it's def worth considering. We should also mention that due to popular demand, we'll be doing another GYPSY & BALKAN BASH in the next couple of months so keep yer eyes peeled and yer fur hats within reach... Check out the Uber Lingua flickr pages to see photos from the recent Abercrombie events. It's also worth getting on the Sydney UL email list by sending a message to syd@uberlingua.com

As founder and former front man of Ultravox! until 1979, and subsequently via his solo projects, John Foxx's work has helped pave the way for a generation of electronic musicians. His debut album, 1980's Metamatic, is today regarded of one of the most pioneering albums in electronic music and created a new wave blueprint for the likes of The Human League, Gary Numan, Duran Duran and, in more recent years, The Faint to follow. Metamatic hit a cultural vein again 20 years later when Ladytron, Adult, Tiga and co were drawn to its minimalist, analogue approach.

In the 90s, John worked with Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass) and LFO, while some of the major electronic acts of that period, such as Aphex Twin, Leftfield and Dave Clarke, were also fans. Ever exploring audio and visual concepts, John's work continues through to the present day, including collaborations with Harold Budd, Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and his ongoing recording and live performance relationship with Louis Gordon, with John's graphics, films and photographic images being exhibited in several major international cities including New York and London, as well as gracing the front covers of books by Salman Rushdie, Jeanette Winterson and Anthony Burgess.

John's projects have included the ongoing Cathedral Oceans and 2006's instrumental concept album Tiny Colour Movies, both of which John has performed live, accompanied by continuous visuals.

Today John Foxx is held with high regard in the electronic music scene. While still lecturing in art and design and working as an exhibiting artist, John's music has been cited as influential from bands as diverse as The Klaxons – clearly indicating that his music still maintains the mysterious magnetism and splendour that shaped a generation of music fans and bands alike, almost 30 years ago.

Coinciding with the critically acclaimed recent release of a remastered Metamatic and the proposed New Year release of a compilation of John's works, John is embarking on a tour of Australia presenting both live performances of his current work and back catalogue, together with performances of Tiny Colour Movies at selected venues, with the following confirmed dates:

THE ENNEAGRAM WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 8 – Sun 9 March
WISDOM & COMPASSION WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 15 – Sun 16 March
In 2004, 2006 and 2007, Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre hosted exciting weekend workshops with Lawrence Graziose from the USA, a renowned teacher of The Enneagram and of the Zen Buddist/Taoist View of Human Nature. We are pleased to welcome him back in 2008 and he has suggested that this may be his last visit to Australia for a while due to exciting opportunities available to him in the USA…so this may be your last chance!
THE ENNEAGRAM WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 8 – Sun 9 March (10AM – 5PM)
The Enneagram is an ancient psychological model which analyses personality types, ego structures and behaviours. It will look at nine ego-fixations which can create suffering in our daily lives and it offers ‘antidotes’ which can counteract the tendency to follow these ego-habits. It proves to be very useful for our work as actors investigating human nature and for our own personal development.
WISDOM & COMPASSION WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 15 – Sun 16 March (10AM – 5PM)
The section on wisdom will focus on spiritual practices that are designed to create an open and expanded mind. The section on Compassion will focus on practices that are designed to open the heart centre to the ‘service of others’. Both sets of practices help us to find true happiness in our lives.
WHERE: 82 Twilight St, Kenmore
COST: THE ENNEAGRAM WEEKEND WORKSHOP: $200

Please be advised that on Friday 22nd + Saturday 23rd February, 2008, there will be three Cardboard Planetariums installed throughout the Sydney CBD, rain, hail or shine. You are very much invited. Details of exact locations will be advised on THE JUNE FOX website on Thursday 21st Feb.

The splendor of the night sky has been a source of wonder, discovery and agitation for our species throughout human history. The observation of the heavens has defined religions, revolutionized scientific thought, guided navigators, and inspired countless mythologies. It has been said that 'they who cannot see the night sky, cannot see...'

In most urban environments, and cities in particular, light pollution renders the night sky down to a few of the brightest stars and planets, obscuring the majority of what has been so essential to our species' development. Perhaps it doesn't matter. Perhaps the stimulus of stargazing is not essential to a happy life. But just in case...

The Cardboard Planetariums will be found throughout the city, hanging in space, rotating lazily around their central hanging axis. You are welcome to duck inside, and to stand for a moment (or as long as you like) inside a solar-powered simulation of the night sky.

These cardboard universes, created with pinholes, contain a starchart accurate to 12 Midnight on Friday 22nd Feb, 2008. A solar-powered simulation of what is hidden, about and above, on a nightly basis.

About, above is a project in two parts, created by Kirsten Bradley during her time as Artist-in-Residence at Firstdraft Gallery, Sydney. Part 1 is the installation and documentation of Cardboard Planetariums throughout the Sydney CBD in mid-February 2008. Part 2 is an installation at First Draft Gallery in April, 2008.

About, above looks at pattern recognition and simulation, how we view 'nature', and what constitutes 'the natural' at this point in western thought. In a world out of balance, About, above also touches on points of Geocentricism, and asks how, as an urbanised culture, have we chosen to see as we do, for all this time.

This project has been made possible by Firstdraft Gallery through their Emerging Artist-in-residence program, and by EXPERIMENTA through their Media Art Mentorship program.

Firstdraft is supported by NSW Ministry for the Arts and the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. EXPERIMENTA 's Media Art Mentorship project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Young and Emerging Artists Initiative through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. EXPERIMENTA gratefully acknowledges the assistance of CraftSouth to the EXPERIMENTA Media Art Mentorship Program.

Entertaining electro/funk/rock band Super Massive return from a successful first Northern NSW & Queensland tour to play a show at Sonar Sydney on Saturday 16th February. Teaming with their good friends The Captains and indie rock duo The Chaperones, it promises to be a solid night of alternative-rock-pop music. Doors open 8pm. $12 at the door or through Moshtix.

Super Massive have plenty of tales & battlescars from the road, including a discoball injury, a cut hand from leaping a fence, a trail of property devastation courtesy of a karate-chopping furniture fiend in Coffs Harbour, and new friends in the Rufus Wainwright band, who checked out Super Massive's show at their Byron Bay gig and loved it, inviting them to their own show at the State Theatre.

Super Massive were awarded the "Best Alternative Artist" Award at the 2007 MusicOz Awards in November, for their evocative and soon-to-be-released synth/rock song “Fists”.

Creative, funky and highly entertaining, Super Massive deliver a powerful blend of dance and rock, meshing multi-layered synthscapes with the full-blooded lustiness of a rock band, for a huge and original sound.

The band's debut EP is due for release in March, however, a Limited Edition Pre-Release CD including the award-winning song "Fists" will be available for purchase at the show.

The band are also selling some sexy, glitzy, glamorous silver-sparkle-on-black band t-shirts to help fund a videoclip for the song.

Sonar Sydney is located at 1 Olympic Drive, Milsons Point, just beyond the Luna Park Face along the harbour boardwalk to Lavendar Bay. Ph: (02) 9033 7666. Web: www.sonarsydney.com

The 2008 Sydney Shakespeare Festival kicks off in January with Much Ado About Nothing, a boisterous celebration of love as well as a sobering examination of misinterpretation, dishonesty and deception. The festival is on at 8pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 January until 17 February 2008 in Bicentennial Park, Glebe Foreshore. The festival is FREE for children 12 years and under, people with disabilities and people aged 65 years and over. For the first two weeks of the festival only, for every ticket purchased, the second ticket is FREE. 10% of every ticket sold throughout the festival will be donated to the Millennium Foundation for HIV Research.

Much Ado About Nothing is loaded with mismatched lovers, squabbling brothers, comic constables and bawdy humor. Young lovers Hero and Claudio are to be married in a week. To pass the time they conspire with Don Pedro, Prince of Aragon, to set a 'lovers’ trap' for Benedick, a self-confessed 'tyrant to women', and the independent and forthright Beatrice, his favourite sparring partner. Meanwhile, Don Pedro's half-brother, the devious Don John, conspires to break up the wedding. Rapier wit and cutting observation; lies, laughter and love with a stiff dose of betrayal. Such is the emotional arsenal deployed for Shakespeare's strategic guide to the war between the sexes.

Sponsored by the City of Sydney council, Sydney Shakespeare Festival is a newly formed not-for-profit annual outdoor festival. "Outdoor theatre is the most magical, accessible and historical performance style," said David Jeffrey, co-founder of the festival. "Relaxing under the stars, enjoying a picnic and the magic of Shakespeare, all while taking in the spectacular views from the park of Sydney Harbour, the Anzac Bridge and the Sydney City skyline, is a great way to spend a summer evening."

Sydney Shakespeare Festival proudly supports the Millennium Foundation and will donate 10% of every ticket sold to HIV Research. "We are thrilled to be associated with Sydney Shakespeare Festival," said Kylie Strudwick, Marketing Manager, The Millennium Foundation. "Even though 39.5 million people across the globe have the virus, HIV research does not receive the fund raising attention and awareness it deserves."

The annual Sydney Shakespeare Festival will feature the works of William Shakespeare and in time will include other contemporary classics. "Shakespeare's plays have captured the imagination of millions of people throughout the world for over 400 years and are as exciting and provocative now as the day they were written," noted Julie Baz, Artistic Director and co-founder of the festival.

The 2008 Sydney Shakespeare Festival is on at 8pm (front of house opens at 7pm) every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Friday 11 January until Sunday 17 February in Bicentennial Park, Glebe Foreshore.
Sydney band Super Massive were awarded "Best Alternative Artist" at the 2007 MusicOz Award last week at the Enmore Thetre, for their creative and evocative synth/rock song "Fists": An impressive achievement considering that the band has not yet released a single CD, nor had a scrap of airplay.

Super Massive is the creative partnership of singer/writer Malina Hamilton-Smith and drummer/composer Glenn Abbott, best known for his work with popular Australian band Machine Gun Fellatio.

The two found a mutual interest in aiming to create the perfect symbiosis of multi-layered synthscapes and the visceral impact of a full rock band.

Inspired in equal measures by funk, pop song structures, rock, french electro, tribal rhythms and the theatrics of glam rock, Super Massive's sound is like a spectacular mirrorball that reflects many tiny pieces of influence, from Burt Bacharach to Alice Cooper to Bessie Smith and Goldfrapp via Tower Of Power, AC/DC and Basement Jaxx, yet with a sound entirely its own.

Joined by electric bass genius John D Young (Chuck Berry, Marcia Hines, Vanda & Young) and talented young guitarist Marc Malouf, the band delivers a powerful and entertaining live show.

Super Massive's debut EP, which includes the award-winning track "Fists", is due for release in January, with an east coast tour slated for late Jan. You can also catch the band at Peats Ridge Festival on Dec 29th.

Candy lips, gyrating hips and lots of beautiful rock/pop music - Two SUPER MASSIVE shows this month.

This is our live show alert. We have two shows this month. They're both supports, but they are special gigs nonetheless, as we are good mates with members of the headline bands for both of these shows, so we're looking forward to a good vibe and having some FUN.

Saturday 21st April - The Bridge Hotel, Rozelle - CD Launch for Daddy Frisco

Saturday 21st April our friend Chris Feegs has asked us to open up for his band Daddy Frisco at The Bridge Hotel, Rozelle, to help them celebrate the launch of their new EP “Beautiful”, which will be out on Waterfront Records. We're on early – 8:30pm – and looking forward to lending our support to the guys. Champagne Shoes (that enthralling, satirical, musical lovechild of 3K & Vash) is the main support act, for those who enjoyed seeing their hilarious music & theatrics brought to life at the Hopetoun at our last show there, and would like another dose. There’s also an after-destination, tbc on the night, where Glenn (from Super Massive) will be doing a drummer vs dj slot, for those who want to carry on from rockland into clubland once the party starts to wind down at The Bridge.

Sunday 29th April - Annandale Hotel - 3 x Rock/Synth bands with Female Vocalists.

Then on the following Sunday, the 29th April, we’re very proud & excited to say we’ve been invited to join a bill of rock bands fronted by female vocalists. The night was put together by Coke Live’n’Local winners Krill, who have become wonderful friends of ours since the first time we played together, and are dedicated fellow arbiters of the synth-rock genre. There are four girls in their band actually, but, agreeably their music is every bit as much ear-candy as their gorgeous selves are eye-candy : ) Some of you would have seen them at our Spectrum show, fresh from a tour of Germany and the east coast.

Sunday’s show is at The Annandale Hotel, and it starts EARLY, being a Sunday. 6pm doors open, and it’s all over by 9:45pm, well early enough for everyone to enjoy the show and still be home and tucked into bed at a very reasonable hour. The Dirty Arrows are opening up. Check ‘em all out! We’re looking forward to this show!! Stick it in your calendar, in your diary or write it on your palm or whatever and spread the word! ‘cause it’s a bloody big room to fill and the more people we can get along, the more likely we all are to get laid, or to get Glenn and/or Yashi to do the robot. Ha ha! We're on main support so we can stick around and chat afterwards - new Myspace Friends, please come up and say hello! Krill are putting up a lucky door prize and there will be other giveaways on the night. Possibly a ceramic hair-straightener, we’ve been told. We think it’s pink, but there'll be no discriminating since we all know how sexy guys look with the smouldering Italian Vogue, sex-rocker, tarzan-locks look. (It’s a look Glenn manages every day when he rolls out of bed. He was just born rock&roll.) Might mention also there’s a very good thai restaurant there at the back of the Annandale, if you’re as lazy as we are about cooking on a Sunday night. We recommend it with gusto. Not sure about the Beerzooka, although it does need to be seen.. If we drank one I think you’d see our bazookas.
