Andrew Lowenthal of EngageMedia explained "Transmission Asia-Pacific will be a unique face to face meeting between video makers and open source software developers to shape open source online video sharing applications and their strategic use for social aims". He went on to explain "free and open source makes sense for organisations with limited means, both from a strictly economic point of view and also as part of their overall strategic aims, as the system of open collaboration and sharing that free software is based on has a natural philosophical fit with organisations working on environmental or social justice issues".

Participants will attend from around the region, for example participants from from Hong Kong making videos about communities resisting gentrification and over development of urban areas in Hong Kong and China. This group puts video cameras into the hands of those most affected by these policies and then helps them edit and share their work on-line. Projects such as these increase the communication rights of marginalized and displaced peoples allowing them to articulate their concerns to a wider public.

Another media activist from India has been using on-line media distribution to raise awareness of censorship of diverse sexualities in mainstream Indian media outlets. They have produced a satirical and humorous look at queer moments from Bollywood films to draw attention to the marginalisation of these voices within Indian society.

Transmission Asia-Pacific is the 4th in a series of events bringing together video activists and web developers. Previous events have occurred in Rome, London and Amsterdam.

For media access to the camp, stories of individual participants and topics of discussion at the event please contact:

"For those unfamiliar with The Necks
their approach is to take a musical idea, sometimes a seemingly inconsequential musical idea, with a short life expectancy, and develop it, slowly transform it, roll it around for approaching the hour mark, riveting your attention throughout"
The Wire - David Stubbs

Chris Abraham (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms.

These three musicians are among the most respected and in-demand in Australia, working in every field from pop to avant-garde. Over 200 albums feature their presence individually or together, but the music of The Necks stands apart from everything else they have done.

Featuring lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in the most intoxicating fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, The Necks stand up to listening time and time again.

The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today.

"Australia's the Necks defy conventions about making and listening to music. Each performance
is an hour of unbroken improvisation, each one different to the last. So if you are a Necks fan, you cannot be sure you will hear your favourite Necks moment again. After 20 years, there are no "greatest hits", only what is next."
The Guardian – John L Walters

Organised by the Audio Foundation, Alt.music is an ongoing series of audio events, regularly bringing a vital injection of contemporary and avant-garde sound art from around the world to New Zealand. Previous Alt.Music artists include Keith Fullerton Whitman, Peter Rehberg, Pauline Oliveros, Voice Crack, Sachiko M, Francisco Lopez, Pierre Bastien, Oren Ambarchi, Metamkine, Richard Nunns and the Dead C.
Vitamin-S was devised as a place where those interested in 'improvised music' could meet, perform, listen to and discuss, and generally interact with, all aspects of this complex and largely misunderstood art form

The Audio Foundation and Alt.music is supported by Creative New Zealand, ASB Trust, THE EDGE® and STAMP, and VIT S

THE ENNEAGRAM WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 8 – Sun 9 March
WISDOM & COMPASSION WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 15 – Sun 16 March
In 2004, 2006 and 2007, Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre hosted exciting weekend workshops with Lawrence Graziose from the USA, a renowned teacher of The Enneagram and of the Zen Buddist/Taoist View of Human Nature. We are pleased to welcome him back in 2008 and he has suggested that this may be his last visit to Australia for a while due to exciting opportunities available to him in the USA…so this may be your last chance!
THE ENNEAGRAM WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 8 – Sun 9 March (10AM – 5PM)
The Enneagram is an ancient psychological model which analyses personality types, ego structures and behaviours. It will look at nine ego-fixations which can create suffering in our daily lives and it offers ‘antidotes’ which can counteract the tendency to follow these ego-habits. It proves to be very useful for our work as actors investigating human nature and for our own personal development.
WISDOM & COMPASSION WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 15 – Sun 16 March (10AM – 5PM)
The section on wisdom will focus on spiritual practices that are designed to create an open and expanded mind. The section on Compassion will focus on practices that are designed to open the heart centre to the ‘service of others’. Both sets of practices help us to find true happiness in our lives.
WHERE: 82 Twilight St, Kenmore

Illuminating the Process... OtherFilm Workshops this week!

Lightstruck
A workshop for moving photogram creations delivered by Kerry Laitala (San Francisco)

Saturday 17th November 2007, 10am - 4pm
Queensland College of Art,
Photography darkrooms (level 3)
226 Grey St, South Bank, Brisbane, Australia
FREE / open to all - beginners and advanced encouraged

Modern day cine-mesmerist, film artist, film educator and creator of Muse of Cinema (35mm, 2006; featured in Rotterdam Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Edinburgh Film Festival etc.), Kerry Laitala invites you to delve into her ultra-specialist treasure trove of knowledge on early cinema, optical film art, and her deep fascination with the spectre/spectator.

In this special one-off workshop, Kerry leads participants through a hands-on journey into the cinematic unknown. Working with 35mm colour film stock, torch light and an array of random objects and liquid, participants will create a collective abstract film over the course of the workshop using the photogram technique. Like May Ray's early photogram films (coined 'Rayograms'), experimental cinema artists have constantly re-imagined available resources creatively, to explore the limitless possibilities of moving image.

Instructional: Place found objects and materials directly onto the film and cast their shadows upon the raw emulsion with light! BYO transparent, translucent and opaque materials used to form latent shadowgraphic traces which are brought to life through hand processing; feathers, buttons, shells, sequins, Letraset letters, symbols and numbers, images printed on to acetate, painted film, anything graphically or texturally interesting.... . A vintage filmstrip projector will be engaged to project the film back the very same evening at the OFF07 event Monster Soup!

Info on Kerry Laitala: www.othercinema.com/klaitala

All are encouraged; however bookings are preferable, email to secure a spot! info@otherfilm.org

Richard Tuohy, founder of Nano Lab (Daylesford, Victoria), lends his expertise, guidance and enthusiasm for all things Super8, with this hands-on demo to shooting and processing.

Explore a range of small-gauge cameras each with special functions and dis-functions. BYO cameras if you want to discuss them. Learn how to control and manipulate focus and exposure settings as well as some techno guff like cartridge re-notching and other small-gauge specific details. Enter the exotic amateur world of Super8 home processing, and consider the options still available for lab processing.
Pre - OtherFilm Festival Event
Artist Talk - Kerry Laitala
Thursday 15th November 6.30pm
State Library of Queensland,
Auditorium 2 (level 2), Cultural Centre,
Stanley Place, South Bank, Brisbane, Australia

Laitala grew up in the wilds of the Maine coast, developing a chronic passion for old things. Her penchant for medical imagery and artifacts of decay springs from occupations in medical and dental institutions where she works during the day (when she is not teaching film classes at the San Francisco Art Institute). Laitala also has a deep, abiding interest in the early history of cinema and pre-cinematic explorations, which have informed her work immensely. For every work she produces, she places her fingers on the pulse of the piece and allows it to grow organically, without a script or prescribed plan. She prescribes to the concepts laid down by early feminist and cine-club founder Germaine Dulac, maker of surrealist films in the 1920's, that cinema should not be enslaved by narrative and theatre, but rather should give form to our dreams and fantasies, and applies this to expansion of the cinema at every opportunity...

We have to thank a range of amazing folks, bodies, bureaucracies for all the support they've given us. The OtherFilm Festival 2007 has been brought into being by the Australia Council for the Arts, the Brisbane City Council, Pacific Film and Television Commission, Queensland College of Art; Griffith University, and numerous volunteers.

Curated by OtherFilm

The introductory session will take place at SARAI/CSDS seminar room on Friday, November 17th 11.00-13.00/14.00-16.00.

Second session on November 24th, same time.

Depending on the participants’ interests, there will either be one or two further sessions, also discussing selected readings and media art projects done or developed by the participants. Questions or suggestions, please e-mail tapio@translocal.net

Examples include:
- public media art projects- media artistic interventions- projects using mobile phones- projects using GPS
Workshop themesOne of the arguments made in the context of new media arts or Internet related theory is that in particular networked media offers new alternative public spaces. How are these arguments grounded in practice? What constitutes a public space in a given culture, to begin with, and how would new technologies amend or replace them?

Lucy Lippard wrote about lure of the location as a warning of essentialist artist practices about location. Today one can discuss lure of location data – as many artists offer views on urban experience based on location data, which in most cases, is merely indexical about a given location with its rich layers of urban life. Through several examples I will illustrate this new genre of locative art or location based media and discuss it in the context of technological sublime and fetishization of new technologies.

Personal computers, mobile phones, networked servers act as auxiliary memory devices. Also many artistic projects work with archiving, databases, and different ways of creating private or shared memories. How media artists and theorists address memory – and how to relate with the frenzy of creating digital artifacts, digital fever?

To register, please send in a short bio and a paragraph on why you wish to attend the workshop to dak@sarai.net by the 12th of November 2006.

I went along to the Sound Walk workshop and walk at Other Film Festival in Brisbane earlier this year. here's a slideshow video of some photos taken along the walk. it brought back such memories! the walk was from South Bank to the city along the river. we went through the Botannical Gardens near QUT Gardens Point which is where I went to Uni. everything was so familiar though I hadn't been there in a few years.

The Korean Electro-Acoustic Music Society (KEAMS) was founded for the development of electro-acoustic music and computer music in 1993.

The society provides a broad forum for new compositions and performance of electro-acoustic music, research about music technology and computer music, technical information sharing, and concerts of electro-acoustic music both in Korea and abroad. Its membership includes composers, performers, educators, researchers and others with an interest of electro-acoustic music. KEAMS' activities include an annual international festival "SICMF", the yearly scientific journal "Emile", and locally organized events such as contests and seminars.

KEAMS is involved with the following activities:

Korea Computer Music Contest

The Korea Computer Music Contest is an annual competition for young composers in Korea.

Seminar

Every month we invite a composer, theorist, or performer and held a seminar for our members and people who are interested in electro-acoustic music.

Summer Camp

The annual summer camp has held since 2000 with different subject every year for our members or students.

Journal "Emile"

"Emile" is a non-periodic journal that focuses on electro-acoutic music. The journal currently is only in Korean.
