Liquid Architecture, Australia's premier sound-arts festival, celebrates its eighth consecutive year with concerts, artist talks, workshops, forums, live performances, exhibitions, installations, audio-visuals and recorded work. Featuring our most imaginative musicians, composers, film-sound designers and media artists in a sense-specific feast for the ears.

What is 'Sound Art'?

"For many, it refers to sound-based art work (or at least art work where the principal focus is on sound) across the broad gamut of performance, installation and broadcast contexts, which departs from both traditional musical instrumentation and notational methods and frequently employs electronic media. Others may see it as an intersecting space with roots in post-Cageian music practice, or indeed 'post-phonographic' music practice, and installation art."
-- Julian Knowles then Professor of Music and Head of the School of Music and Drama at the University of Wollongong, in an article entitled Sound Practice, Sound Thesis in RealTime No68, August / September 2005

What is Liquid Architecture?

Liquid Architecture is a sense specific festival, as opposed to art form specific. Occurring annually since 2000, Liquid Architecture celebrates the diverse methods of sound making and sound theory. It is our belief that listening is a vital activity, and one that is often overlooked within the dominance of visual media in our environment.

What will I hear?

A key objective is the promotion of artists practicing on the periphery of music and sound culture, particularly those with an experimental aesthetic and a critical approach to (media) cultures. The artistic content of the festival focuses upon and privileges sound practice in all its manifestations but, due to the cross disciplinary potential of sound, many other art practices are included in the festival. Liquid Architecture focuses on any and all art forms involving particular emphasis on the auditory, including an exciting mix of musical performance, AV presentations and installation work, along with a strong critical element involving panels, workshops and artist talks.

Who's it for?

Now coming into its eighth consecutive year, Liquid Architecture strives to combine the fragmented communities in which sound arts practices occurs, striving for cross disciplinary appreciation and critique. The practical objective of this strategy is to popularise and publicise sound culture through greater aggregate audience size and a higher profile, and to make sound culture more accessible to the community, particularly to youth and student audiences. Audiences currently include those engaged with contemporary creative practice, sound arts practitioners, music industry professionals, electronic music concert goers, academics, cultural theorists and students (post & undergraduate), youth audiences and enthusiasts of adventurous popular music.

Liquid Architecture aims to popularise sound culture, particularly with young/emerging content producers within Australia's active student culture, in order to build not only future audiences but also future artists. Our rationale reflects an intense engagement with specialist and broader cultures, and the desire to make a contribution to those cultures. Sound practice is often cross disciplinary and the festival should reflect that, not only in the work presented but in the broad range of audiences it attracts.

The opportunities to network with national and international artists are an important means of generating future initiatives and cross cultural collaborations. The community is being exposed to some of the most exciting explorations occurring within sound culture that also happen to intersect with the media and fine arts. The exposure generated by Liquid Architecture is crucial in developing new audiences for the many discreet sound and experimental music communities currently operating around the country, and internationally.

Who's responsible?

Liquid Architecture is curated by practicing sound artists. Directed by Nat Bates, who heads the ((tRansMIT)) sound collective, and co-directed with Ben Byrne and Shannon O'Neill from alias frequencies and Lawrence English from ROOM40. The Artefacts of Australian Experimental Music CD launch is presented by Shame File Music.

Ben and Shannon have fostered a Sydney home at the Performance Space, Lawrence works closely with the Brisbane Powerhouse, and in Melbourne the festival is once again supported by RMIT Union Arts and returns again to the Arts House at the North Melbourne Town Hall.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its principal arts funding and advisory body.
The Sydney season is supported by Arts NSW, Melbourne by Arts Victoria.
Pauline Oliveros and Ione's visit has been made possible through the Alt.Music Festival under The Audio Foundation New Zealand, and in co-operation with the Fulbright association.
Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock and Dave Philips' visit is supported by Pro Helvetia and dual plover.
Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine's visit is supported by the French Embassy and Alliance Francaise.

The exhibition explores how sound can shape our understandings of our surroundings and ourselves, bringing into question the nature of space within a gallery and the role of the subject in experience. Assembled by several of Australia's premier emerging sound artists, the exhibition invites the audience to enter, surround, and interact with the installations.

Inspired by German architect Friedrich Kiesler's interest in the interrelationships between people culture and space, with a particular focus on the role of sound in this regard, the exhibition presents four individual installation works, all of which create singular spaces in the gallery while at the same time intermingling with one another, their environment and their subjects. In encountering each work, the line between audience, artwork and gallery blurs, challenging us to confront the continuity that exists between all three as well as, more broadly, art and life itself.

Tracts is curated by Ben Byrne. Former director of the Electrofringe and Liquid Architecture festivals Ben is an electronic musician, improvisor and artist currently undertaking a PhD on the nature of sound. The show also features the work of Adam Costenoble (Sydney), Matt Chaumont (Sydney) and Thembi Soddell (Melbourne). Musicians and gallery artists, Adam Costenoble and Matt Chaumont have both received Helen Lempriere Art Prize Awards, alongside Thembi Soddell who has released several albums and most recently performed at the Melbourne International Biennale of Exploratory Music.

A new annual outdoor festival has hit Sydney's inner west. The 2008 Sydney Shakespeare Festival kicks off in January with Much Ado About Nothing, a boisterous celebration of love as well as a sobering examination of misinterpretation, dishonesty and deception. The festival is on at 8pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 January until 17 February 2008 in Bicentennial Park, Glebe Foreshore. The festival is FREE for children 12 years and under, people with disabilities and people aged 65 years and over. For the first two weeks of the festival only, for every ticket purchased, the second ticket is FREE. 10% of every ticket sold throughout the festival will be donated to the Millennium Foundation for HIV Research.

Much Ado About Nothing is loaded with mismatched lovers, squabbling brothers, comic constables and bawdy humor. Young lovers Hero and Claudio are to be married in a week. To pass the time they conspire with Don Pedro, Prince of Aragon, to set a 'lovers’ trap' for Benedick, a self-confessed 'tyrant to women', and the independent and forthright Beatrice, his favourite sparring partner. Meanwhile, Don Pedro's half-brother, the devious Don John, conspires to break up the wedding. Rapier wit and cutting observation; lies, laughter and love with a stiff dose of betrayal. Such is the emotional arsenal deployed for Shakespeare's strategic guide to the war between the sexes.

Sponsored by the City of Sydney council, Sydney Shakespeare Festival is a newly formed not-for-profit annual outdoor festival. "Outdoor theatre is the most magical, accessible and historical performance style," said David Jeffrey, co-founder of the festival. "Relaxing under the stars, enjoying a picnic and the magic of Shakespeare, all while taking in the spectacular views from the park of Sydney Harbour, the Anzac Bridge and the Sydney City skyline, is a great way to spend a summer evening."

Sydney Shakespeare Festival proudly supports the Millennium Foundation and will donate 10% of every ticket sold to HIV Research. "We are thrilled to be associated with Sydney Shakespeare Festival," said Kylie Strudwick, Marketing Manager, The Millennium Foundation. "Even though 39.5 million people across the globe have the virus, HIV research does not receive the fund raising attention and awareness it deserves."

The annual Sydney Shakespeare Festival will feature the works of William Shakespeare and in time will include other contemporary classics. "Shakespeare's plays have captured the imagination of millions of people throughout the world for over 400 years and are as exciting and provocative now as the day they were written," noted Julie Baz, Artistic Director and co-founder of the festival.

The 2008 Sydney Shakespeare Festival is on at 8pm (front of house opens at 7pm) every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Friday 11 January until Sunday 17 February in Bicentennial Park, Glebe Foreshore.
Illuminating the Process... OtherFilm Workshops this week!

Lightstruck
A workshop for moving photogram creations delivered by Kerry Laitala (San Francisco)

Saturday 17th November 2007, 10am - 4pm
Queensland College of Art,
Photography darkrooms (level 3)
226 Grey St, South Bank, Brisbane, Australia
FREE / open to all - beginners and advanced encouraged

Modern day cine-mesmerist, film artist, film educator and creator of Muse of Cinema (35mm, 2006; featured in Rotterdam Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Edinburgh Film Festival etc.), Kerry Laitala invites you to delve into her ultra-specialist treasure trove of knowledge on early cinema, optical film art, and her deep fascination with the spectre/spectator.

In this special one-off workshop, Kerry leads participants through a hands-on journey into the cinematic unknown. Working with 35mm colour film stock, torch light and an array of random objects and liquid, participants will create a collective abstract film over the course of the workshop using the photogram technique. Like May Ray's early photogram films (coined 'Rayograms'), experimental cinema artists have constantly re-imagined available resources creatively, to explore the limitless possibilities of moving image.

Instructional: Place found objects and materials directly onto the film and cast their shadows upon the raw emulsion with light! BYO transparent, translucent and opaque materials used to form latent shadowgraphic traces which are brought to life through hand processing; feathers, buttons, shells, sequins, Letraset letters, symbols and numbers, images printed on to acetate, painted film, anything graphically or texturally interesting.... . A vintage filmstrip projector will be engaged to project the film back the very same evening at the OFF07 event Monster Soup!

Thursday 15th November 6.30pm
State Library of Queensland,
Auditorium 2 (level 2), Cultural Centre,
Stanley Place, South Bank, Brisbane, Australia

Laitala grew up in the wilds of the Maine coast, developing a chronic passion for old things. Her penchant for medical imagery and artifacts of decay springs from occupations in medical and dental institutions where she works during the day (when she is not teaching film classes at the San Francisco Art Institute). Laitala also has a deep, abiding interest in the early history of cinema and pre-cinematic explorations, which have informed her work immensely. For every work she produces, she places her fingers on the pulse of the piece and allows it to grow organically, without a script or prescribed plan. She prescribes to the concepts laid down by early feminist and cine-club founder Germaine Dulac, maker of surrealist films in the 1920's, that cinema should not be enslaved by narrative and theatre, but rather should give form to our dreams and fantasies, and applies this to expansion of the cinema at every opportunity...

We have to thank a range of amazing folks, bodies, bureaucracies for all the support they've given us. The OtherFilm Festival 2007 has been brought into being by the Australia Council for the Arts, the Brisbane City Council, Pacific Film and Television Commission, Queensland College of Art; Griffith University, and numerous volunteers.

Making its festival debut at Marrickville Road Festival this year is an artistic new band called Super Massive. Super Massive will perform on the Urban Stage at Marrickville Road Festival, Marrickville on Sunday 9th September at 11am.

Named for modern society’s collective fascination with superlatives and for the biggest and best! of everything as much as for their wall of sound, Super Massive is a synth pop rock band with exhilarating, danceable grooves, an emphasis on melody and an engaging, energetic stage presence. The band has a unique sound and a treasure trove of songs that respond to the nature of today’s urbanised, fast-paced world.

Much of the writing was inspired by the experience of living in inner Sydney over the last couple of years. Says singer Malina Hamilton-Smith “Some of the songs are observations of society, whilst some are escapism – but escapism of a realistic kind. The sort of escapism anyone can achieve, such as trying to take life at a slower pace, living in the moment or living in your body as opposed to your head.”

Unlike many electro-heavy bands, Super Massive is a full rock band line-up, with synth elements used to add layers of texture, creating a very full and distinctive sound. Influences stretch beyond the current fashion for 80s synthpop to embrace aspects of 70s rock, glam rock, funk, French electro and big beat, building an original sound that avoids ever being purely retro.

Formed in 2005, Super Massive’s chief writers are singer/performer/writer Hamilton-Smith and drummer/composer Glenn Abbott (best known for his work in Machine Gun Fellatio). Talented bassist John D. Young (Marcia Hines, Chuck Berry, Vanda & Young) joined in 2006.

Rhythm and groove is incredibly important to Super Massive. “We want the music to move people, physically and emotionally. Glenn and John are both very funky players, and it’s awesome when they really let loose, play something intense and challenging and carry the audience away with them. They’re very good at adding tasty playing without distracting from the core structure of the song.”

One of the most popular events of the inner west’s cultural calendar, the Marrickville Road Festival is a street party that attracts over 50,000 people a year. “We’re thrilled to have been asked to play. We’re still a very new band and haven’t released any of our music yet, so it’s a lovely surprise to have been asked to join the bill of such a wonderful community spirited event. It’s great to be a part of it and we’re looking forward to a really fun day.”

In Brisbane for the first time, reportage is a dynamic cinematic experience featuring photo essays by Australia’s best photojournalists and documentary photographers set to a moving soundtrack.

ANG FANG QUARTET
Experience the classic Charlie Chaplin comedy The Gold Rush the way it was meant to be seen - with a musical score performed live in the cinema by the extraordinary Ang Fang Quartet. Red hot swing meets slapstick in this night of hilarious entertainment. A 2006 Melbourne International Comedy Festival favourite.

Internationally respected UK sound artist Scanner uses the seductive conversation, musical fragments and city soundscapes to create an homage to Italian film director Michelangelo Antonioni and his city of Rome. With The Eclipse (1962) as the focus, Antonioni’s classic film is reflected back to the audience in harmonics, hushed voices and sound effects.

New York composer David Shea is a master of collage and reinvention. Symphony of Scenes is a unique electronic music spectacle celebrating the visuals of iconic film auteurs including Sam Fuller, John Cassevetes and King Hu and the sound/composition of giants Bernard Hermman and Toru Takamitsu.
