WIRED O P E N DAY on 31st October 2009 is your opportunity to GET WIRED in the great outdoors of The WIRED Lab.

WIRED O P E N DAY gives the general public the first opportunity to interact with the ‘wires’ and witness its vast array of creative applications.

Performing at WIRED O P E N DAY will be the original wire maestro Alan LAMB and his core crew of collaborators Dave NOYZE, Garry BRADBURY, Oren AMBARCHI and Robin FOX. Each artist will be presenting unique ruminations of the 'wires' sonic capacities. Dave NOYZE and Alan LAMB will perform live mixes of this dynamic instrument; Garry BRADBURY provides a live mix in the pitch of ‘B’ (also the pitch of Bees in chorus!) for a 'great bow' acoustic performance by Alan LAMB; Oren AMBARCHI treats the wires like a giant guitar and amplifier; and Robin FOX utilises wire sounds to control a laser beam across the surface of water.

Commencing in the late afternoon audiences will be bussed from Cootamundra to The WIRED Lab site for a multi-sensory experience of site and sound. From sunset to nightfall audiences will experience the immense dynamic range and capacity of a musical instrument spanning hundreds of metres across the landscape. Affectionately called “... nature's microphone” by WIRED Lab curator Sarah LAST, the ‘wires’ and the WIRED O P E N DAY program expands many horizons, and will radically shift paradigms of art, music and space.

The WIRED Lab is a collaborative arts project uniquely located in the rural landscape of South West NSW. In 2007 The WIRED Lab was established to create a site for artists, scientists and audiences to expand upon æolian traditions, environmental sonification, ‘wire’ music and research originally developed by Alan Lamb. Since its inception many Australian and international artists have visited The WIRED Lab, their research continues, and October 31st is the first of many future open days.

Wide Open Space is a new all ages festival for Central Australia, showcasing inspiring local and national music and arts.

Renew Newcastle aims to find artists, cultural projects and community groups to use and maintain these buildings until they become commercially viable or are redeveloped. Renew Newcastle is not set up to manage long term uses, own properties or permanently develop sites but to generate activity in buildings until that future long term activity happens.

Renew Newcastle was founded to help solve the problem of Newcastle's empty CBD. While the long term prospects for the redevelopment of Newcastle's CBD are good, in the meantime many sites are boarded up, falling apart, vandalised or decaying because there is no short term use for them and no one taking responsibility for them.

Renew Newcastle has been set up to clean up these buildings and get the city active and used again.

The Sydney Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef - In the interest of contributing to the world wide phenomenon initiated by The Institute For Figuring, In Stitches Collective is facilitating the creation of a Sydney Coral Reef. We invite you to participate in this woolly celebration of the intersection of higher geometry and craft, a testimony to the disappearing wonders of the marine world.

The reef was inspired by geometric models of hyperbolic space, originally developed by mathematician Dr Daina Taimina in 1997, using the art of crochet. Until that time most mathematicians had believed it was impossible to construct physical models of hyperbolic forms, yet nature had been doing just that for hundreds of millions of years. It turns out that many marine organisms embody hyperbolic geometry, among them kelps, corals, sponges and nudibranchs. The IFF reef not only looks like an actual coral reef, it draws on the same underlying geometry endemic in the oceanic realm.

The Crochet Coral Reef is a collective and collaborative experience created by The Institute For Figuring (IFF) directors Margaret and Christine Wertheim (www.theiff.org). The project not only draws attention to the beauty and fragility of the coral reef (an ecosystem system most vulnerable to the effects of climate change), but also links communities through science, mathematics, art & craft.

The IFF site has instructions for you to build your own hyperbolic plane

One suggestion is to use plastic bags instead of yarn as another method of recycling them. the gooseflesh blog has a plastic bag yarn tutorial on how to reuse plastic bags as yarn.

Narghile is an AV performance project of Brisbane's video & sound artist Lloyd Barrett. Lloyd has also worked using the name Secret Killer of Names / SKON. I googled N4rgh1l3 and found some video works. absolutely amazing! he mentioned he uses Isadora. it's amazing what he gets the program to do - if only I could get it to do half as much I'd be happy!!

this is a video piece submitted for the surface mapping projection at the Queensland Library at the Opening of the "Game On" exhibition (early arcade games & consoles). I went to this exhibition during Christmas holidays - it was great. unfortunately I didn't attend the Opening night as I was interstate. plenty of fathers showing their sons the games they played when younger. visitors were allowed to play the games, and they could read a bit about the history & background of the games. the Japanese 'dating' games was a new one to me!

greg jenkins - composer and performer

greg jenkins composes directly with the inherent musicality of sounds, making harmony, melody and rhythm subservient to sonic texture and spatiality. He will often extrapolate sonic minutiae into whole compositions for example by "zooming in" on a tiny fragment of recorded voice then using this as the basis of a droning musical weft.

greg also likes to hit things; things such as suspended arrays of inverted flower pots; things such as beer kegs; and things such as midi percussion controllers which allow him to subversively remap non-percussive sound objects to percussive performance gestures. He frequently makes use of "micro-gestures" - subtle physical manipulations of computer hardware which control software synthesis engines allowing him to perform directly on the software in real time. greg is also known as "cactusman" due to his penchant for using a cactus as an amplified acoustic instrument.

NUCA - the Network of Un-Collectable Artists - is a nation-wide affiliation connecting those who gravitate towards ephemeral projects, participatory experiences, illegal art actions, and activities that oddify everyday life. Some members make unwieldy installation projects, while others alter billboards, project images in abandoned spaces at night, or exchange ideas rather than objects. Some simply make dead ugly paintings that would never sell.

Because such artworks are often fiendishly tricky to document, they seldom grace the columns of "recognised" publications. NUCA is building a publicity machine of its own, so artists may exchange essential info about their activities, collaborate on new projects, and connect with Uncollectable others.

"Reconstituted" is the third Apell album and sounds like the groovier half of Amon Tobin sampling George Clinton with a jazzy electric bass. The album features a drum n bass version of Neil Young's "Don't Let it Bring You Down" and a chill out reworking of George Harrison's overlooked gem "Long, Long, Long" from The Beatles White Album. Another album highlight is the track "Dubya" featuring lyrics inspired by inane quotes from President George W Bush's speeches and his life story.

I arrived back in Sydney early this morning (29/11) and slept most of the day then spoke to family on the phone. it'd been drizzling when I was coming from the airport, but then in the afternoon there was a hail storm. afterwards the air was so fresh and the skies started to clear. it was beautiful - like the Queensland afternoon thunderstorms we used to have in summer all the time when I lived there. it was a nice way to clear my head a bit too after the craziness of the past couple of days and long flights home.

let's hope the skies can clear for the Mumbaikars too and they & the city can start afresh.
