Expect a steamy summer evening loaded with slamming, dirty-groove, electro-laced, beguiling tunes, as award-winning Sydney band Super Massive bring their unique blend of rock and dance music to Brisbane over the Australia Day long weekend, as part of their first Queensland tour.

Super Massive play at The Step Inn, Brisbane on Australia Day, Saturday 26th January, in a night chock full of electro-rock goodness. Local electro-pop-rock band Elation lending their dirty grooves, big beats and sassy vocals in support, and the Dance In Circles DJs, Gay Dan & Ninja Rock will be there right through til 1:30am to guarantee the sexiest sounds for your ears and feet. Entry is $12, 8pm.

Super Massive were awarded the Best Alternative Artist Award at the 2007 MusicOz Awards in November, for their evocative and as-yet-unreleased synth/rock song “Fists”, which you can sneak preview on the band’s myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/supermassivesounds.

The band is the songwriting co-project of drummer/composer Glenn Abbott (formerly of ARIA winning band Machine Gun Fellatio & his own solo project The Bryan Ferrysexual Experience) and singer/writer Malina Hamilton-Smith.

Together with electric bass genius John D. Young (Chuck Berry, Marcia Hines, Vanda & Young) and talented young guitarist Marc Malouf, the four deliver a powerful and entertaining show that seamlessly blends loops, synths, electro sounds, deep funkiness and the lustiness of a full-blooded rock band, in creative and catchy, pop-structured songs.

Says Hamilton-Smith, "It's an entertaining and energetic show that people can either sit back and watch, or get up and dance to. There's a lot of variety in the songs and sounds to keep it interesting for the audience, and we drive it to the highest intensity we can, to make it a real thrilling, exhilarating night."

The band has been steadily building a following at live shows in Sydney over the past two years, performing to full houses at venues including Home Nightclub, Will & Toby’s Supper Club and Glebe Street Fair as well as at the Beach Hotel, Byron Bay.

The band's debut EP, which will include the award-winning song “Fists”, is due for release in March, however, a numbered Limited Edition Pre-Release CD will be available for purchase at the show.

Tour dates:

Wed 23rd Jan - Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle
Thurs 24th Jan - Hoey Moey, Coffs Harbour
Fri 25th Jan - Beach Hotel, Byron Bay
Sat 26th Jan - Step Inn, Brisbane
Sun 27th Jan - Hard Rock Cafe, Surfers Paradise

Sydney's producer/musician Jamie Olsen is hitting Melbourne for the release of his new Rephrase album "Little Victories" and upcoming double remix CD. This home-grown talent is beating new life into our local breaks scene, attracting worldwide support from artists like Fort Knox Five, AGFA, Mo Horizons, Kraak n Smaak, Ed Royal & A Skills. His music has been heard across radio and television with plays of "Since 1939" heard on Big Brother, Home & Away and he’s made original music for the World Cup. He brings a body-movin DJ style that is the perfect mix of hip hop, breaks, funk & house… Rephrase puts the fun back into funky breaks!!

2001 saw Jaime form Sydney breaks duo Db Chills, who signed to Stephen Mallinder’s label Offworld Sounds. They became DMA nominees in 2002 for their debut album “Broke Sound” and a new Db Chills project is currently in the works. In 2003 the Rephrase sound was born and first solo album “Beat Coaster” received critical acclaim from artists including John Stapleton (Dope On Plastic), Giles Peterson and Miguel Migs. Recent times have seen the Rephrase style spread across the globe with Jaime releasing original tracks and remixes on Freestyle Records, Beatphreak’s Jack To Phono, AGFA’s Funk Weapons, Innvision Records but to name a few… don’t miss this home-grown funk phenomenon.

Disorientation is a monthly night of audio-visual performance
and improvisation at the Abercrombie Hotel.

Presented by the UTS Sound Collective and Supported by UTS Union and
Bondi Intermusic

This Month's Artist Details:

MORCEAUX DE MACHINES

The duo of Aimé Dontigny and Érick Dorion, a highly skilled pair of
improvisers, who know how to drive the consenting listener on a sonic
adventure which will leave them with their mouth gaping. But if this
dynamism and this tension seem almost theatrical, it’s a sort of théâtre
de la cruauté impermeable to the false sentimentality of harmony,
ferociously deconstructive of deifying systems such as Bach’s.

Is it just noise? No, there is much more than just noise in these
exuberant, life-affirming soundtracks. Just as there is more to the
loudness of their composition than a superficial affront to musics which
are too easy to like, or too modest. If their machinist acrobats make
such a ruckus, it’s because they are acutely conscious of the risk their
acrobatics entail. That said and done, we are left with a music that is
lively, highly personal and full of depth.

MIHA CIGLAR (AUSTRIA/SLOVENIA)

Miha Ciglar is a composer and sound artist currently studying at the
University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, Austria. Originally from
Maribor, Slovenia, Ciglar now lives and works in Western Europe. Since
2001 he has performed his own compositions for saxophone, guitar,
vibraphone, double bass, electro-acoustical performances, interactive
dance performances, computer music and audiovisual installations at many
art festivals all around the world.

His work has strong conceptual fundaments and points away from
expressive values of common aesthetic ideals. A subject of high concern
and priority is the problem of absolute awareness of sonic perception
which is directly connected with the question of existential legitimacy
of sound art. Ciglar's compositional approach and attitude towards
technological solutions are very similar and rooted in a revaluation of
existent “material”, resulting in its preliminary decomposition, in
order to absorb its originally suggestive character for an employment in
the further process of creation.

VENTRICLE

An improvising comprised of pixel pushers Luke Callaghan and Ivar
Lehtsalu, Ventricle creates beautiful and chaotic machine sound scapes,
digital mayhem and moments of quiet beauty.

EMILY MORANDINI

Miss Morandini is a predominantly a sound artist, occasionally straying
into the sordid world of video, installation, and scarf-making. Recent
sonic mis/adventures include übercube, the Splinter Orchestra and
Turkish Pop Group, with tentative hopes to appease the masses with an
onslaught of solo material.

Here are some bios...

Andrew Garton (9-10pm)

Recently returned from Korea, Andrew Garton was keen to do an Uber set and
reveal some of his new found Asian findings... Musical one's that is...

From pens to beetle nut, from vitamin C tablets to cashews Garton's chewing
continues and it did veraciously in recent weeks during a short sabbatical
in Soul. South Korea became a source for inspiration in Garton's eclectic
music and performance video works in 2001 when he started collecting
traditional forms known as sal manori and sinawe, rare recordings of ancient
songs sung by Korea's last living Geisha, a selection of glam rock, manic
hip hop, pencil-head electro-acoustic works and more recently, psychedelic
minimalism. Read more on the uber web site....

'Killa' Namila (10pm-11pm)

Pacific background... as she gets older (it's her birthday), she feels the
pull of her ancestry coming thru, influencing her direction towards
"exploring more Pacifica sounds and tribal beats..." etc. Namila's got a
mixed bag of beaut global treats, delving into different times, different
continents and lotsa fine ladies... Should be grouse!

DJ Russian Disco, from Melbourne's weirdo art-rock/horror-movie-film-score
troupe the Ang Fang Quartet spins Russian and Eastern European oompah-rock,
gypsy-thrash and psycho-polka. Stompin' rhythms, freaky melodies, Red Army
choruses, unstoppable vodka binges and non-stop tuba-shreddin' action -
ladies and gentlemen, make this summer the Summer of Russia.

Monthly screenings with a simple goal of showing interesting and
experimental film and video works in an appropriate setting,

Month of September (05.09.05)

At the risk of breaking everyone's brain, this month we are taking a
participatory journey through the "...unavoidable future of entertainment.."
as we peruse the history of, and highlights from, Channel101 -a strange beast.
Every month, in an old theatre in LA, a crop of ~5min show pilots appear along
side the shows that have survived from the previous month. At the end of the
show the audience votes on those who will return, but more on that later.
In keeping with the Channel101 ethos, the Camera Obscura audience "drunk on
the blood of lowly artists" will vote our way through the various shows.
We're going to preface this with some new content from Brisbane's Botborg,
something short and sweet from Spike Jonez and, as always when I'm in charge,
something remixed from archive.org called We Edit Life.

This is the last Camera Obscura for 2 months, as we'll be in Newcastle for
electrofringe next month doing a screening, (check:
www.thisisnotart.org/Program/EventDetails/tabid/783/xmid/244/Default.aspx )
So if you are going to be at electrofringe and you'd like your work screened
by us in the future, send me an email, or ring me on 0401 922 997 during the
festival.

We've also have a Camera Obscura program winging it's way to Indonesia for the
first ever internation C_O screening, which is pretty cool.

We Edit Life
Vicki Bennett (people like us) (10min, USA, 2002)
"Experimenters in visual perception are using computers to create weird and
random patterns that never occur in real life to find out what and how people
see when these patterns are shown to them. The art of computer graphics is
only in its infancy yet it is already stimulating creative thought in far out
areas where research is likely to get complex and unwieldy. If offers not only
the means to quicken the pace of discovery but an ideal of communicating what
we may discover"
- We Edit Life.

How They Get There
Spike Jonez & Mark Gonzales (3min, USA, 1996)
A sharp and clean idea, that gets driven over the top.

you must render the pleasure of holding the superfine
Joe Musgrove & Scott Sinclair (Botborg) (12min, AUS, 2005)
"Botborg present live audio-visual performances using a complex feedback web,
consisting of audio and video mixers, screens and camera. In this web, sound
and vision fuse into a self perpetuating synaesthesia of colour & rhythm,
generated (in real time) entirely by device feedback through electronic
circuits and the performance space. Assisted in performance by Scott Sinclair
& Joe Musgrove, the human elements of Botborg can influence, but never
completely control this web once set in motion. These performances provide an
equally disorienting and joyous but deeply organic experience as the
'operators' of the web attempt to 'converse' with (rather than control) the
internal logic of the feedback system."

Channel101 (http://www.channel101.com)
Channel101 is a "living, autonomous, untelevised TV network, powered not by
promise of reward to the artist, but by the artist's desire to reward the
audience."
"For the audiences that attend the live screenings, Channel 101 is a chance to
sit in the worn-out chair of the fat network exec, drunk on the blood of lowly
artists whose right to exist is given in exchange for their ability to
nourish. If there are 10 shows in the screening and 7 of them are good, that
means 2 good shows aren't coming back and the power of life and death is in
your hands. Base your decision on whatever you want. You run the network. You
you stop wanting something is the day it stops."

In keeping with the Channel101 ethos, I have collected all of the episodes
from a number of the more popular shows. We are going to watch them one by
one, and you "drunk on the blood of lowly artists" will be able to choose if
we continue with each show or move to the next one. I have no idea of how
long this part of the screening will take, but we've got a bunch of episodes
from "House of Cosbys", "Laser Fart", "Gregory Shitcock, P.I.", "Adventurous
und Magick Haus" and more so we could be there all night.

House of Cosbys
The first Channel 101 series ever to go three consecutive months at #1, House
of Cosbys was one of those rare 101 breakouts that went on to satisfy the
world. In the show, the real Bill Cosby never came along and destroyed his own
clones, but in real life, creator Justin Roiland and channel101.com site
administrator Dan Harmon received "cease and desist" orders from Cosby's
attorney in June 2005. The legal questions ground HOC's intensive animation
process to a halt and House of Cosbys became Channel 101's first show to be
killed not by the audience or by its own creator, but by lawyers. However, due
to outcry and outrage, Channel 101 will continue to carry the first four
episodes for your enjoyment.

Laser Fart
Laser Fart began as a joke submission during a light month in 2004. Creator
Dan Harmon was able to keep it alive with a Jack Black cameo in episode 2. On
the third episode, Harmon teamed up with samurai lensman David Hartman and
Channel 101 history was made. Laser Fart delighted audiences with its
ironically epic feel and came breathtakingly close to breaking The 'Bu's
record for longest running show.

Gregory Shitcock, P.I.
Gregory Shitcock, P.I., was one of the first signs that 2005 was going to be a
very different year at Channel 101. Hancock and Randolph, who had come humbly
sniffing around with their pilot Man to Man, became just confident enough to
make this show's brilliant first episode and the audience immediately snatched
them up. Like Laser Fart before it, Shitcock evolved on its third episode,
taking a slight step behind the fourth wall and ratcheting up its
cinematography. It was the first show to shoot a three-episode arc all at
once, and the strategy did pay off in that the trilogy of episodes 4-6 was
allowed to come to its touching conclusion.

Adventurous und Magick Haus
Dave Hartman's second Prime Time show's unspoken premise was simple: Vote for
me, and every month, I will bust my ass on mind-blowing visuals, channeling
the resultant sleep-deprived schizophrenic breakdown into the story and
characters. The result was a truly magickal blend of refined technical
expertise and stream of conscious mythology.

As always we're looking for your screen stuff, or your suggestions.

Then - we party!!

Date: Sat 2nd July, 2005

====================================================
And now - a little data -

Its a Liquid Architecture night with Thomas
Brinkmann and Natalie Beridze - who performs as tba - @ the Public Office

So we're there from 7.30pm at 100 Adderly St West Melbourne on July 2nd.

So - just to explain for those who might be curious to come but who didn't
make the Monolake party in 2003 that this one has grown out of ...

Its an early start at 7.30 for a listening concert in an informal venue
with the bar open instead of the usual rows of seats setup and you can't blink without someone frowning.

The sets will be short and to the point and its really a bit of an
electronic computer based multi media variety show. Weve got multi screen, audio generated, double mouse controlled interractive surround sight video, laptop hiphop and onthemic midfloormadness, composed computer music, a husband and wife double act on decks and laptop, multi media extreme noise, field recording based nerdy melancholia and cack yourself nocopyright sampler hysteria.

Brought to you by artists from Victoria, Germany, the ACT and Sydney -
including Lucas Abela, fresh from an overseas tour and a glassblowers conference in Adelaide who's performing with new intstruments.

Its a long night but we plan food from the Melbourne Uni Food Coop and you know the deal - get there early, be there for the local crew, always on first ..... c'mon people!!!!

Then after 12 it might get really wild. In between the dj's - cos you
gotta have dj's if you're gonna party these days - everyone knows that!! - we're up for three hours of live minimal tekkers with specially prepared sets from Steve Law in Zen Paradox cossie and Pat Stormont bracketing a second set from Thomas Brinkmann.

But wait - there's more - just when you think you know something about
Thomas Brinkmann you ask him for his tech specs and the learning curve ramps
up!!

Surprises in store ......

Heres the facts ....

DJs:
Damien Laird (Data on Dub) Ben Henderson (Fang)

Live Acts:
Thomas Brinkmann, TBA, Zen Paradox (Steve Law) Pat Stormont , Shoushi and Raseles, Seo, Somaya Langley, Wake Up And Listen (Sydney), Lucas Abela (Sydney), Dale Nason and Kim Bounds, Robin Fox and Arnya Tehira .

The Liquid Architecture program is online at

http://www.liquidarchitecture.org.au/la6-program/

This wouldn't be happening without Liquid Architecture so get there and support and enjoy the LA artists who've been building for this genre hop for 6 years now!!

The Strange Noise Sound System will produce some electro-glitch-hop chaos, including all extras, combining the talents of DJ One, Ali K Adams and Brainmachine into one psychedelic sonic gestalt.

Apell takes the stage, using samplers and live instruments to produce a blend of downtempo grooves, funk-edged electronica and just the right dash of jazz.

DJ Zaziz re-emerges a changed man following a dalliance with regularity, his hypnotic afro-centric grooves following more eccentric orbits than ever.
