Last year's festival was really hands on, which made it extra fun. This year looks set to keep your creative juices flowing also, with sessions such as Physical Computing : 1, Radio Locus Workshops such as Build your own Radio, Mulchwerk, a Dorkshop Sense & Control, a Homemade Instruments workshop Gestural Control & Feedback plus heaps more. The electrofringe website has the full program and a day by day listing of each workshop / panel session / project presentation / gig and happening. The other bonus to the festival is stopping to chat with friends and strangers about the festival and projects everyone has been working on over the year. Electrofringe is now calling for proposals for this
year’s festival
from artists, media makers, curators, researchers,

producers, enthusiasts, etc.

Part of the ‘This Is Not Art’ umbrella of Festivals in
Newcastle,
NSW, this year Electrofringe will occur from 28th
September to 2nd
October and will feature artists from all over
Australia as well as
visiting international artists,

A heads up, hands-on, all-in festival of experimental,
electronic,
digital and new media arts and culture. It is
dedicated to unearthing
emergent forms, highlighting nascent trends and
encouraging
participants to explore technology and its creative
possibilities.
The directors for Electrofringe 2006 are Ben Byrne,
Cat Jones and
Sumugan Sivanesan.

Areas for investigation may include (but are not
limited to) hybrid
performances, media based practices, web, networked &
online
collaborations, wireless, wearable and locative
technologies, sensor
based interactions, software art, custom electronics,
experimental
interfaces, alternative energies, sound, video,
installation and more.

Electrofringe is a skills and arts development
festival consisting of
panels, workshops, masterclasses, artist presentations
and
performances and applicants are asked to make
proposals under one of
the following programming streams:

Panels
Panel-based discussion around a central topic or
theme. If proposing
a panel, please include a preliminary title and the
topic/theme/
argument to be discussed. Please also consider other
possible
panellists and a moderator.

Workshops
Skills development sessions (2-3 hours) aimed at
novices introducing
skills, concepts and techniques.

Masterclasses
Intensive workshops (generally run over 2 days), aimed
at
participants with a more detailed knowledge of the
skills/subject
involved.

Spa[v]ce
Artists presentations and discussions concerned with
evolving sound
and audio/visual practices.

Artist Talks
Presentation and discussion of works, techniques and
themes with
examples. Suitable for individuals, collectives and
collaborations.

Other

The call for submissions for the ElectroProjections
screen program
will occur later in the year to allow for work
currently being
produced. Also, there are only limited opportunities
for exhibitions
and presentations of full works. Gigs will be arranged
by the This Is
Not Art Festival Gigs Coordinators with artists drawn
from the
festival program – please apply with the festival
format in mind (ie
if you want a gig you should consider a panel /
workshop as well).

The software runs on a MAC, which unfortunately I don't have. :( perhaps if we get a project bonus this year I might be able to save up for one so I can try the software (and also max / msp }. anyway, I also came across the name dpwolf on the videoblogging mail list and low and behold it's the same person. he seems to do some work with Adrian Miles, who does some great projects with video and interactive quicktime and media in general. small world. I'd love to do the course Adrian teaches but can't afford to give up work to do it fulltime. due to excessive work commitments, I had to drop the Internet Communication course I was doing at CQU. now that I've finally upgraded my (this) site and moving most of my projects online (so as not to be so dependant on my laptop in case of travelling without it), I'd like to experiment more with blogging, videoblogging, podcasting and digital art and music projects (in addition to listing other people's projects on the site), hence, why the blog posts here have now become more personal. I've been reading about and been across these media for a while but haven't had much time to play myself, so that's the goal for the next year (& hopefully continuing onwards).

Electrofringe is a hands-on, all-in new media arts festival dedicated
to unearthing emergent forms, highlighting nascent trends and
encouraging young and emerginging artists to explore technology and its
creative possibilities. Electrofringe will take place in Newcastle as
part of the This Is Not Art Festival from the 29th September - 3rd
October 2005. The Electrofringe directors for 2005 are Wade Marynowsky
& Sumugan Sivanesan.

We are now seeking EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST from new media artists,
curators, artsworkers, writers and producers. Possible areas for
investigation include (but are not limited to) wireless, wearable,
sensor based, sound, video, audio/visual, web, networked & online
collaborations, software, art & science, robotics, custom electronics,
experimental interfaces, media based installations, performance and
hybrid practices.

Electrofringe is a skills and arts development festival thus the
dominant format consists of panels, workshops and masterclasses. Please
bear in mind that there are limited opportunities for exhibitions and
presentations of full works. Gigs will be arranged by the This Is Not
Art Festival Gigs Coordinators in consultation with the individual
festivals with artists drawn from the festival program so please apply
with the festival format in mind.
