Voices from the Waters
A Film Festival

Call for Entries

Bangalore Film Society and Water Journeys, in collaboration with the
Alliance Francaise, Bangalore (India) and with the support of the
Federation of Film Societies of India are organising an international
film festival on water titled, 'Voices from the Waters'. The Film
festival will take place from April 13 - 16, 2005 at the Alliance
Francaise, Bangalore.

Bangalore Film Society
" In each image one must know who is speaking ...
our task is to discover images and sounds which are free..."
Bangalore Film Society is a forum of individuals committed to
evolving a new perspective for film appreciation-an attempt that
seeks to transcend the popular conceptions of cinematic entertainment
from neutral, value free flights into the realms of the fantastic and
the illusory to that of a purposeful voyage into terrains of the real
and immediate concerns of human experience.

In its 27 years of active involvement, Bangalore Film Society has
been instrumental in screening films of internationally acclaimed
film directors from all over the world, initiating a process of
intercultural dialogue and creating avenues for divergent aesthetic
experiences.

The basic objective of the Society is to familiarise and generate
awareness among the public about the contemporary socio-political and
cultural issues, which informs artistic expressions. The Society
attempts to promote an aesthetic, which affirms human values,
multi-culturalism and plurality.

Water Journeys
Campaign for the Fundamental Right to Water
" May the rain continue to dampen the land,
May the wet forests continue to grow."

It is a conglomerate of several groups and organizations from South
Asia who are deeply concerned about the increasing scarcity and
commodification of water.

Water, the source of life, today, has been deviously packaged into a
commodity, creating a paucity of water and causing severe trauma to
various peoples all over the world. The shortage of drinking water
both in urban and rural areas has escalated to an acute level in the
last five years, specially heightened by drought and war. This will
have serious repercussions for the peoples of the world and the
environment.

One of the objectives of Water Journeys is to screen films on water
issues, water struggles, water conservation and related issues in
schools, colleges and communities to start a dialogue on the issue of
control and use of water. It aims at networking with agencies
involved in the protection and preservation of lakes, rivers and
other water bodies.

Further Water Journeys will soon start an international journal on
water issues. It will address the socio-political and cultural
implications of water, making it an interesting and enlightening
knowledge source for action.

While both Bangalore Film Society and Water Journeys are autonomous
bodies, they are under the auspices of Society for Informal Education
and Development Studies (SIEDS), Bangalore, India. SIEDS is a
thirty-year-old organization that critiques the contemporary
development paradigm which has created pockets of plenty and abysmal
poverty across the globe. The homocentric development paradigm treats
the earth as a commodity, which will have catastrophic effects on
nature and the environment. We are already victims of such an
approach. SIEDS in its involvement with present socio-political and
cultural issues concerning women, tribals, Dalits, environment, media
and so on, attempts a nature-centric vision and sustainable
development.

The film festival on water will concentrate on subjects such as water
scarcity, its conservation and positive steps for action towards the
preservation of the same. The festival will hold discussions on water
and related issues. The festival hopes to create awareness on culture
specific water conservation. Simultaneously, there will be an
exhibition on water that will sensitise and inspire the audience,
particularly the youth.

This international film festival is the first of its kind in India.
We invite you to be part of this event by contributing short,
documentary and feature films (DVD/VCD formats) with English
subtitles on water and related issues. Further, we would appreciate a
preview copy of any films you would wish to send so that we may place
them in one of the five categories of the festival, namely Water
Scarcity, Narmada Valley Struggle, Water Harvesting, Water and
Spirituality and Water Struggles. We would duly acknowledge your
participation.

We would appreciate contact details, email and website details.
Should you need more information about us, please do get in touch
with us.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanking you,

Yours Sincerely,

The party partners are back
The two biggest party animals in town reunite with the first-ever independent radio show dedicated to club music
ROHIT BARKER and DJ Ivan are two names that spell "party" to any young 'n' restless Bangalorean. Having the ex-RJ and the country's best DJ at a club is a sureshot way of ensuring a combination of the wildest music and crowds partying like the world is going to end tomorrow. Besides being favourite Page Three personalities, Rohit and Ivan created the first-ever dance music show on radio which had a successful run for two years before the station changed its priorities. After a hiatus lasting a year and a half, the duo have come together to create the first-ever independent radio show in the country.

Buying time

The unique thing about Hot Mix is that the guys purchase airspace frequency by the hour to beam their show, which features the latest tracks on the international club scene. They air Hot Mix on FM Rainbow, All India Radio, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. every Saturday on 101.3 FM. Ivan explains: "We pay AIR for one-hour slots where we are allowed to have three minutes of commercial break slots per hour. We would hopefully recover our investment by attractive a sufficient number of advertisers."

Rohit adds: "More than the money, we want to do something for the clubbing population of Bangalore city. The dance capital of India deserves at least one exclusive dance music show, and since Ivan and I know exactly what they are looking for on Saturday nights, we are confident of striking the right chord with them."

But why FM Rainbow and not any other FM or satellite radio station. Whatever happened to the "coolness quotient" of the stations? "People have this misconception that it's niche music that we play on Hot Mix, which is completely wrong. We are here to create an atmosphere to gear you up for that Saturday night party. Anybody listening to the show, whether he/she is 14 or 40, is guaranteed to get energised and ready to hit the club to unwind after a week's hard work," says Rohit. "Let me tell you frankly, I may play every night at a pub for a whole week and still not be able reach out to half the number of people who are tuning in to one episode of the show. At the end of the day, it's not the station, but the music that matters," adds Ivan.

Savvy crowd

What sort of dance music impresses the Bangalore audience? Rohit says: "Bangalore is the only place in the country where people are savvy about the various genres of dance music, be it trance or house or underground, but the city freaks out on hip-hop and any recent hip-hop track is sure to fill the dance floor." Ivan adds: "Right now, a track called "Hotel" by R. Kelly is big in Bangalore, but my favourites would be a track called "Flashdance" by Deep Dish, that has this infectious underground house flavour. I'm just back after a tour of Dubai and when I played this track at one of the music stores there, I was overwhelmed by the number of people who wanted to procure that record." He adds that Bhangra is gaining great popularity at an international level, and artistes such as Rishi Rich, who incorporate Bhangra with other genres of music, are drawing the crowds.

So, how has the response to the new show been? "Hot Mix is just a few weeks old and we already have our first sponsor. The number of SMSs and calls on our response systems have been phenomenal, and once we make the interaction systems more compatible, we hope to incorporate listener's suggestions on the show. In short, the response has been as high as the BPM levels of the music we play," they say in unison.

Musical escapades: From the racks to the Net

Im a cyber viber, In a virtual sea/Im a glider rider, On a surfing spree.

Come and,/ Come and/ Come and vibe with me

It may be music to your ears, but these are the lyrics of Indias first cyber song - Cyber Viber; composed and sung by Remo Fernandes.

Pop singer Remo of Jalwa fame had especially composed this song for fabmart.com, an online music store in January.

There are thousands of music titles ranging from rock, pop, bhangra, classical, bhakti etc available on the World Wide Web. The Internet has completely rocked and revolutionized the music industry all over the world and India is no exception.

"The Internet is pied piping our Net entrepreneurs, artistes, fans and music labels to dance to their tunes," says Manubhai Shah, who runs a music store at Mumbais Crossroads.

Fabmart.com, soundbuzz.com, musicurry.com, vindia.com, audiofind.com, mp3.com are some of the websites frequently visited by music fans to download Indian as well as international music. Back home, musicurry.com is the only Indian portal to have obtained license to host and play Indian music online.

The Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) and Phonographic Performance Ltd, wings of the Indian Music Industry (IMI), have granted musicurry.com the first of its kind license to legally host a wide variety of music ranging from golden to the very latest releases in the Indian music world.

"We have also got exclusive rights for Hirthik Roshan starrer Fiza and Dhadkan," says Rohini Rego of musicurry.com. musicurry.com promotes all forms of Indian songs ranging from Indipop to film music and regional music. It was also the first Indian portal to launch online label as well as online tutor (online guruji) for budding musicians. We are planning to diversify into international rock music, which would enhance our popularity, says Rego.

Things have changed a lot for fabmart.com which launched its first cyber song Cyber Viber. The company has just launched a new album on the net; 'Balle Balle Boys' by two new bhangra artists - Vineet Singh and Navdeep Singh.

"Ladoo Kha, from the Balle Balle Boys is our attempt to promote budding musicians and use the power of the Net to reach large audiences," says K. Vaitheeswaran, vice-president marketing, Fabmart India.

Fabmart.com is a multi-store virtual supermarket, and has started a music store with a collection of 5,000 music titles. The launch of the latest album Sarvasri by M Balamurali Krishnan exclusively on Fabmart was a worldwide first. It also launched a collection of Kannada cine star Rajkumars devotional and film music on its website to coincide with Karnataka Rajyotsava Day celebration. We are getting 500-600 orders per day over the Net. This includes the entire range of music labels available with us, says Vaitheeswaran.

The new entrants are also concentrating on tapping fresh talent through the Internet by marketing their songs. Soundbuzz.com, which is one of the worlds first digital music distributors, has recently held a talent search for budding artists in the metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Bangalore and Chennai. We are planning to rope in 25-30 new artists every year (five each from every city) and promote their music, says Sardha Ratnam of soundbuzz.com.

Soundbuzz.com is focusing specially on Indian music for promotion, sampling and purchasing of secure downloadable music from major record labels, as well as independent labels and unsigned artists via digital downloads.

The company has already tied up with music companies like BMG Crescendo and Megnasound, and artists like Lucky Ali, Asha Bhosle, Leo Begga and Whitney Houston. Though it is too early to take a look at cash registers, the online music stores have finally arrived. With web radio too making inroads into the Indian homes, its time to muse on and keep an ear to the ground.
