.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
In a globalised world, dominated by communication technologies, with
countless questions concerning a future that affects our everyday
life, it is essential to make this analysis and to consider, from
different perspectives, how our polyhedral, altered reality is being
effected by the widespread use of new technology as a support for new
ideas and possibilities that are almost infinite. We need to
investigate how this occurs in different societies and cultures and
to propose models that may go beyond what has been known until now.

The First International Art Tech Media Congress has been set up in
order to reflect upon and analyse questions currently being raised
about art and new technological media within an international context.

Within this context, an intensive debate needs to take place on the
influence and transformations that new media is producing in art,
there needs to be a greater understanding of the foundations for more
effective cooperation between the different sectors linked to digital
art, and proposals need to be devised for the development of national
and international collaborative networks in order to improve
production, research, exhibition and promotion.

Last year, Art Tech Media 06 encounters had been held at nine Spanish
museums, and given the great participation and the opinions
collected, its seems clear that this is an ideal time to celebrate
the First International Art Tech Media Conference. It represents a
great opportunity to hold a transversal debate in order to devise
proposals that will lead to greater and better coordination among the
different sectors of art, aimed at strengthening its development.

Codespace integrates realtime drawing and motion-images with electronic sounds that evoke an abstract place where organical and crystalline shapes pulsate and flow. Generative (rule-based) processes or algorithms and realtime action by the artist are applied to basic shapes which in conjuction with finely graded colours comprise a rich palette of textures and shapes. empty dark space is inhabited by fast moving abstract shapes, structures with an architectural quality develop over extended periods of time. The piece evolves from dark and minimalist atmospheres to abstract densities, like a digital painting performed before the viewer's eyes. Memory of the images accumulates, obtaining qualities like a painting or etching. Reduction and concentration of elements helps to maintain the crucial focus, build the tension and give insights into the enigmatic and invisible world built of code.

Combining schizophonic computer rendered soundscapes with graphical abstractions Mise En Scene is an exploration of film sound - in particular the importance of incidental sound in the creation of effective and diverse virtual environments. Using abstract methods of translating appropriated video and sound Mise En Scene demonstrates the very human ability to make sense out of nonsense when within a set of guidelines and expectations. Mise En Scene ultimately focuses on the creation of scenes from a variety of visual and sonic signifiers, the end result being akin to a strange dream open to interpretation.

_grau is a personal reflection on memories coming up during a car accident, where past events emerge, fuse, erode and finally vanish ethereally. various real sources where distorted, filtered and fitted into a sculptural structure to create not a plain abstract, but a very private snapshot of a whole life within its last seconds... The living paintings (Tableaux Vivants) of growing structures branch out over 10:01 minutes (a reference to the binary system by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, where he ascribes 1 to god and 0 to the devil) without ever reaching pure black or white respectively. Every element originates from real experiences and is adapted from my sketches, my own body fragments or scientific visualization methods. For example the first, still colored seconds are the prismatic halos of the collision fading into gray ("grau" in german)... The musical framework connects the memories born out of the dramatic moment to clusters. These are unleashed from the image flux partially - to ease the desired, free associations of the beholder... The Kunst Film Biennale judges assigned the movie _grau by robert seidel an honorary award at KunstFilmBiennale 2004, because of the technological mastership which is used to show never seen phenomena in the borderland of science and aesthetics. director, producer, animator: robert seidel. music: heiko tippelt, philipp hirsch. visit http://www.grau1001.de/ for more details or to download the video or purchase the dvd

Below are examples of software implementations based on a cybernetic framework together with articles, course descriptions, and design proposals that show how cybernetics is an effective tool for harnessing computation in service of human goals.
