CRIT (Collective Research Initiatives Trust) is a group of architects, scholars, technicians and artists who have worked together over the past seven years in Mumbai. Our collective was established in early 2003 with the aim of undertaking urban research, design and activism in the cities of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. CRIT regards this vast urban realm as its laboratory and terrain for articulating an emerging urbanism. Our understanding of urbanism is based on the belief that everyday exchange between disciplines and collective research is essential to transforming urban spaces and civic life.

Since 2003, CRIT has undertaken research and design projects throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on housing, environment, conservation, spatial and planning policies in the context of urban development. Our current and completed projects are grouped within the following programmes: Metropolitan Peripheries, Community Housing, Public Spaces, Post-Industrial Landscapes, Sanitation and Waste Management. We also occassionally produce print and web publications, curate exhibitions, organise workshops and public events as part of our ongoing series Metrologue.

current projects include :
The Gender and Space Project focuses on gender as a category to examine the ordering and experience of the city and its varied spaces, particularly public space. Public space in the context of the study refers to public places, ranging from streets, public toilets and market places (across class contexts) to recreational areas and modes of public transport.

The project is located in and focuses on the city of Mumbai.

Research on this project combines traditional social science research such as ethnography, interviews and group discussions along with methodology drawn from the areas of film, photography, architecture. The project also has a strong pedagogic component involving elective courses in architecture and liberal arts colleges and short workshops. The project aims to understand the hierarchies and boundaries that determine access to public space along a variety of axes (class, caste, religion, geographic location and gender). It hopes to unsettle the gendered binaries regulating women's presence in public space, raising questions about the ways in which ideas of private-public, respectability-unrespectability, safety-violence, rational-risky are reflected the discourses of public space and citizenship.

book : Bombay and Mumbai: The City in Transition
Edited by Sujata Patel and Jim Masselos

via http://mail.sarai.net/pipermail/reader-list/2003-February/002410.html

This volume, third in the series on Bombay, or Mumbai, brings
together essays that treat the renaming of the city as a point of
departure in visiting enduring themes in Bombay's life. As Bombay
explodes into the megapolis of Mumbai, the volume examines whether
transition is merely in the name or it has larger implications for
the city's growth—in terms of an enormous expansion in size,
diversity, population and function.

The essays collected here offer exhilarating and provocative insights
on what Bombay has become, as it steps into the new millennium. Has
living in Mumbai meant a better life for its inhabitants or are they
still condemned to the continued struggle for existence, and
consequently withdrawal? Among other themes, the volume inquires
whether the city has managed to retain its identity or is it has lost
it like any other large metropolis.

More specifically, the essays focus on diverse aspects of the city's
social, political and economic life including housing rent control,
the participation of Dalits and minorities in the city's life and
activity, health-care and life in the shanties, the twin evils of
crime and communalism, and the world of films.

This vivid but realistic volume on Mumbai will serve as an essential
and contemporary urban social history of Mumbai and will be useful to
sociologists, historians, urban theorists, political scientists, and
culturalists. In addition, activists, scholars, journalists and
academics concerned with everyday life, culture, history and urban
spaces of cities and particularly Mumbai will also find the volume of
interest.

"The Jawaharlal Nehru urban renewal mission programme is intended to upgrade various cities in India. What this really means is that the cities are to be made fit for foreign capital so that it feels cosy. At the same time basic infrastructure for the poor is crumbling, basics like primary schools, postal offices and subsidized foodgrain shops."

"On the brighter side Mumbai is projected prominently at the 10tth international architecture exhibition on 'cities, architecture and society' at Venice being held from September 10 to November 19. Mumbai was the only Asian city chosen for the exhibition."

dharavi.org is a multimedia wiki website designed to gather information, images, and ideas on Dharavi in Mumbai. Dharavi is one of the largest informal settlement in the world. dharavi.org offers a space to discuss the Dharavi Redevelopment Project and its alternatives

from the dharavi.org introduction page :
"Often dubbed "Asia's largest slum," Dharavi is in fact a heart-shaped agglomeration of primarily informal settlements, literally located in the heart of Mumbai, India's commercial capital. Once a remote settlement on the outskirts of the city, Dharavi — due to Mumbai's rapid northward expansion — now finds itself strategically located between the city's two main suburban railway lines and a stone's throw away from the Bandra-Kurla Complex, the new financial and commercial center."

"These geographic advantages and Mumbai’s relative shortage of developable land combine to make Dharavi a prime piece of real estate potentially worth billions of dollars, creating pressure for redevelopment. "

The workshop's philosophy is based on the idea that communities should be allowed to determine their future and that everyone, no matter the age, language or qualification should be allowed to participate in the process.

The material generated within the workshop is being uploaded onto dharavi.org a wiki based website allowing anyone to log in and contribute.

Panel Session at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers (AAG)

Over the last decade, Mumbai has become far more prominent within international coverage of contemporary urbanism. This greater focus on Mumbai has been a welcome rejoinder to a continued predominance of North American and European cities within urban studies and debate. Yet in accounting for urban change in Mumbai, there has been a tendency to uncritically adopt Eurocentric models and terminology.

This session seeks to explore some of the ways that Mumbai disrupts and contradicts existing categories, histories and narratives of urban analysis. The session will question some of the institutional frameworks for urban research and a tendency for debates about the future of cities to be initiated and directed by experts and practitioners based in the global North.

It will attempt to assess why Mumbai has recently assumed significance as an urban archetype, and examine ways urbanists can help facilitate scholarship in cities such as Mumbai, and develop new progressive forms of learning and research. The aim is not to isolate Mumbai as an exceptional form of urbanism nor to confer paradigmatic status on Mumbai, but to show how a city such as Mumbai can be used to generate new theoretical dialogue, greater historical perspective and open up new channels of urban policy formation.

Urban Poverty and Transport: The Case of Mumbai
http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=801486

Abstract:
This paper reports the results of a survey of 5,000 households in the Greater Mumbai Region conducted in the winter of 2004. The goal of the survey was to better understand the demand for transport services by the poor, the factors affecting this demand, and the inter-linkages between transport decisions and other vital decisions such as where to live and work. This paper, the first of several research outputs, describes the salient facts about travel patterns in Mumbai for both poor and non-poor households.

A striking finding of the survey is the extent to which all households-especially poor households-rely on walking. Overall, 44 percent of commuters in Mumbai walk to work. The proportion of the poor who walk to work is even higher - 63 percent. Walking is an even higher modal share for non-work than for work trips. A second finding is that public transit remains an important factor in the mobility of the poor, and especially in the mobility of the middle class.

Overall, rail remains the main mode to work for 23 percent of commuters, while bus remains the main mode for 16 percent of commuters. The modal shares for bus are highest for the poor in zones 1-3 (21 percent of the poor in zone 2 take the bus to work), while rail shares are highest for the poor in the suburbs (25 percent of the poor in zone 6 take rail to work). Is the cost and lack of accessibility to transit a barrier to the mobility of the poor? Does it keep them from obtaining better housing and better jobs? This is a difficult question to answer without further analysis of the survey data. But it appears that transport is less of a barrier to the poor who live in central Mumbai (zones 1-3) than it is to the poor who live in the suburbs (zones 4-6).

The poor who live in zones 1-3 (central Mumbai) live closer to the non-poor than do poor households in the suburbs. They also live closer to higher-paying jobs for unskilled workers. Workers in these households, on average, commute short distances (less than 3 kilometers), although a non-negligible fraction of them (one-third in zone 2) take public transit to work. It is true that the cost of housing for the poor is higher in central Mumbai than in the suburbs, but the quality of slum housing is at least as good in central Mumbai as in the suburbs.

The poor who live in the suburbs of Mumbai, especially in zones 5 and 6, are more isolated from the rich than the poor in central Mumbai: 37 percent of the poor live in zones 5 and 6, whereas only one-fifth of higher income groups do. Wages for skilled and unskilled labor are generally lower in zones 5 and 6 than in the central city, and it appears that unemployment rates for poor males are also higher in these zones. The lower cost of slum and chawl housing in zones 5 and 6 may partly compensate for lower wages. However, a larger proportion of workers in poor households leave zones 5 and 6 to work than is true for poor workers in other zones. Commuting distances are much higher for poor workers in the suburbs than for poor workers in zones 1-3.

drupal 6

required :
- images folder
- .info file for your theme -> holds info like name of theme folder, version, engine (most often used is phptemplate - others are smarty (eg big company where designers only use that), regions (screen areas - eg left/right sidebar, content, footer), core (drupal version this can run on)
- you can add as many regions as you like called whatever you want

page.tpl.php file
- main template file - this is really the only one required
- head_title -> into title tag
- then print head, print styles, print ..

navigation
logo, site name

print theme('links', $primary_links, array('class',

footer
- print $footer
- print $closure - required, or some other modules don't work
- eg garland theme has everything in it

important variables
- ...
- help
- title
- content
- feed_icons

books
- learning drupal 6 - module development
- drupal 6 - building powerful & robust websites with drupal 6
- pro drupal developement

garland
- sometimes you get a blank page when making a new theme
- paste in default theme if it's not there

barron theme - tableless css theme - good to start with
good base themes - basic, sky (can convert to wiregarden)

use framework, then modify

http://drupal.org/project/signwriter
- no more photoshop, great graphic design
- takes the text on the page, runs it through GD library (graphics lib) and replaces it on your page
- can set colour, font, size, use a transparency

try zektron font/typeface

writes the text as an image on the page
put fonts in files/fonts (for example)
- can do multiline, drop shadow, transparent/& it's colour backgrounds
- can output at jpg, gif

eg for all filtered text, or all H1, H2, replace text with signwriter, replace custom tags

T1 libraries - for non-true type fonts?
- no - use truetype fonts and GD library. use all lowercase truetype fonts
- apply filter text (on certain html tags)
- or .tpl file

- use full html input format

open office exporter

- cck - store quotes, invoices etc data in drupal then use open office exporter to create an xml file open office doc

cck widgets

$filename = "ooo-{$node->nid)>.odt";

in open office doc, [var.contact_details] - it will look for the "var." and then replace the section in the open office doc with the variable
- so u put the line items
- this uses GLOBALS - most sites will have register globals off though - so watch out for this

java libraries, php libraries (dom pdf), command line ---> create pdf files
fop?? xslt easy to export as pdf??

so they use drupal as a report writer

---

edit view - drupal 5 atm

http://drupal.org/project/editview

- customer wanted ms excel like functionality - table like editing
- good for updating adding database records

- uses jquery to add, delete, update nodes. can load files, images, select dates
- ajax
- obeys validation rules too

- build a view
- appears as a view type 'editview title' etc
- if it's a cck field u can save it, if it's not, eg title then you might need to code a new save-node (which is called) (check??)
- validation rules - eg in cck, check that title is required. if it's not supplied then gives a message
- update each row after editing

- eg to give the frontpage a different layout

panels_front url. then set this as the main page

- the panel layout options only occurs within the content area of your current theme
- ignore the titles section of panels in layout settings

- advanced settings
-- disable drupal blocks/regions - for a frontpage panel this will remove the left column nav bar

- content tab
-- click the + button in the pane. then u can select what content types u can put in the panels
- add a custom content type
- u can add css tags/classes in most of these areas to apply extra css instructions to it later (it adds them as css tags)
css - u don't need the .josh just use josh for the class name. and u can use multiple, just separate the list with space

- useful with views
- u can embed a view straight into the panel
- convert same view into multiple panes. once it's a pane u can modify what it does/shows

views panes (in admin page)
- connect the view to the panel --> pane
- category = views (define your own, these then appear in the list of content types in the box above)
- views can only use page & blog (views 1, views 2 can do more)
- allow the pane configuration to modify the items to display setting = checked, then passes this control through to the panels page, so if multiple users/groups. then each group/user could assign different values for these in their own view rather than using the site-wide value

offset - to skip first article (it's shown in full / feature article), show the second article (in a list). also good for sticky articles at top of page

then go back to panel content, and add the view panel
you can override the title
eg joshs news %title
- u can use keywords from context

devel module
- automatically generates some users and a dummy page for theme demos

so in the panel, create the main section with the article view panel. then in the centre/bottom panel, use the same view but a different view panel which shows the articles in list form instead of full view

--- part 2

advanced panels

contexts
- create a node page override
- on blog pages, show other blog posts by same author
- news node pages, show other news articles on same topic

views
- latest blogs
argument : user : UID s author, display all values, title=blogs by %1
add panel page : title is replaced later, path= node/%
panel page : context tab : arguments, contexts, relationships
- arguments - these are at the end of the url, expects a number/integer, userid, vocabulary id, taxonomy term id (category)
- contexts - haven't used it much
- relationship

add an argument
- specify a new keyword eg node_title
- own display - for your own articles of that type

relationships
- user from node

node1 blog entry & node1 story entry - these have their own new views
now when u add content to the panel, there's a node context content section and a user context section

articles by same user
- in the panel view
- argument
UID is author
from context
required context=user

then add this to the panel
title= %user's latest blogs
in left column
can change to table view to show the list

export from a test site, then import:
views
veiws panes
panels
- make sure tinyMCE is switched off

More than 100 emerging and established artists from Australia and overseas will take part in 80 events over five days including workshops, gigs, screenings, performance and public intervention.
Electrofringe in 2008 brims with new ventures. These include an artists-in-residence program and a three-week interactive media exhibition. New program gems include a hybrid media/dance performance, an all-girls soldering workshop, a chorus composed for Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, an audiovisual "love-in", and a chamber recital for robots.
Special international guests include Birchville Cat Motel (NZ), Domenico Sciajno (Italy), xtine (US), The League of Imaginary Scientists (everywhere) and The Green Eyl & Sengewald (Germany). Japan is well represented by elongated harshcore musician Maruosa, noise artists Pig & Machine, and experimental multi-instrumentalist KK NULL.
Electrofringe 2008 features an impressive screening program including award-winning highlights from the Japan Media Arts Festival and SIGGRAPH 2008, surround-sound selections from New York's Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Centre and eclectic works from France’s Arcadi festival. There are also two specially curated screening reels called ElectroEtre and ElectroProjections compiled from open, international call-outs.
Electrofringe 2008 is directed by Alex White, Elmar Trefz and Somaya Langley.
I think Facebook and Myspace are good examples of crowdsourcing these days - having regular people provide content for their sites. As is wikipedia. And even to a small extent this site - but I tend to provide 90% of the content here! Other Australian dance / music related sites generally use this model too : In The Mix, Resident Advisor and even SPRACI to some extent. I'm not sure it's a new thing - underground magazines, zines, newsletters & (postal) mail lists etc have been using this model prior to the rise of the internet - one example off the top of my head in Brisbane was the Vinyl Knickers mailout newsletter & flyer drop. The internet radio station I worked at (rather ... volunteered for!) Pulse Radio used this model too as does most community based sites in the grassroots movements - though perhaps one difference is that most of the grassroots sites are not commercially based and don't make any money. Maybe I should read the book and see where he's coming from..

A notice came through via the AIR list (Association of Internet Researchers) that there's another crowdsourcing blog called Crowd Source: Power of the People, which is intended to "document key activities, developments, literature, and news". Also there's a crowdsourcing facebook group : "The CrowdSource Global Facebook Group is intended to serve as a forum and venue in which members can discuss community-based contributions and potential solutions to any and all economic, scientific, social, and technological issues, problems, and situations, primarily via, but not limited to, a digital environment.". I wonder if they'll talk about sites where people spend a lot of time & effort & work preparing content and later the site deletes it or loses it due to bad backup procedures, or changes focus as has been my experience on some sites I've contributed to.

Another blog about crowdsourcing is http://crowdstorming.wordpress.com - they collate information from around the net also.

We also have free classifieds so you can buy and sell treasures! You
also get a blog.. plus we have a global calendar where you can promote

http://semanal.ning.com/ is the Semanal site - a worpress blog is also being setup (I'll post the link here also once available). usually people post their videos to their usual video hosting site (eg blip.tv, youtube, archive.org etc) and their blog if they have one, and also post a link / embedded version to the Semanal site. this time you can post to the wordpress site blog also, which will have an RSS feed so you can easily watch the other contributors videos (or watch them directly on the blog site as I tend to do)

I'd love to see more Australian videos there from friends and creative people I know / know of! they can be any type of videos - personal, talking to the camera, gig videos, shows, interviews, arty & experimental, generative, computer generated, Second Life video - whatever you'd like to do. there's a mixture of beginners and more established video producers, so everyone is welcome. sometimes someone picks a theme and people use that, other times they do what they like. you can use your phone camera, happy snap portable camera, webcam, HD / professional camera, or even do remixes of archive.org or other existing footage - whatever suits you. it's a good way to practice different techniques and see what is in the imagination of others too, and even just a good way to learn a new skill such as web video and/or software / video editing techniques. the community for the project is great too - very supportive!

from http://semanal.ning.com/ :
"Every week in 2008, we're posting videos. 52 videos by the end of the year. Post on your blog, on Seesmic, Facebook, YouTube, whatever, wherever and however. You can do anything you want. As long as it moves."

Rupert explains the term Semanal chosen for the project :
"Semanal is Spanish and Portuguese for 'weekly'. And I think it has a nice echo of the English word Seminal, defined here as:
"Highly influential in an original way; constituting or providing a basis for further development: a seminal idea in the creation of a new theory."
and at Wikipedia as: "a work from which other works grow... an intellectual or artistic achievement whose ideas and techniques have been adopted or responded to in later works by other people"

since upgrading to drupal 4.7, I'll be testing the chipin and ecommerce modules to see if they are of use.
it would be great to be able to help people realise their projects. I think it could also help them to practice making grant funding applications to larger organisations and government bodies. anyway, it couldn't hurt to try. if the people make pledges to support the project, then only pay for them once the full amount of money is raised then it's less risk for them. I've pledged and donated money in this way. $10 a month (or less if I decide to skip a project) is not much for me to pay - it's less than the cost of a cd and is another way to help support a project when you can't attend in person. I figure I've spent more than that on less important things, so it's one way to help give back to the community! also, as these days I don't make it to events I'd like to in person, this could be another way of supporting them without being there.
I wonder if others think this way also. it's hard to convince people to spend their hard earned cash. just as it's hard to get people to come along to gigs. an interesting experiment nonetheless. hopefully some of the projects would be able to offer something extra, an incentive if you will, to the financial contributors. drupal groups modules might be useful for this..
I was thinking of using these systems to help raise money for people to work on projects - small budget amounts. maybe to do a promo cd or put on a gig or get a small book published or attend a conference & report on it etc. the donators would be given credit in the project and maybe get special previews on how the project is going. I could put the documentation on my site.
the project would get to practice applying for grants, so would need to be professional about it, have a definite timeline to work towards, and there would have to be a final outcome they could report on and document so people who donated knew their money went towards something real and was not just lost.
the system could also be used to raise money for charities, or if you can't decide on a charity, then think of the artist as your target for giving.
anyway, here's some sites useful for research about this or showing examples of currently working systems :

ARTunderground's mandate is to experiment with the integration
of computers into the creative process of expression, and
explore the idiomatic potential of computers to seek out a
distinctly digital aesthetic.

ARTunderground facilitates fine artists, students of design
and art, art educators and amateurs to experiment with digital
skills.

The Gallery also exhibits & markets their creations to
business corporations and individual art collectors.

Digital Painting is emerging as an art form so unique and vibrant that it leaves a lasting impression on a viewer's mind.

Today the computer is not merely assisting us to manage or manipulate data but it is demonstrating its power as a tool to unleash creative energies and awaken the artist in each of us.

The medium is fast becoming the message...

With computers reaching out to every home, art can find its way to where it really belonged - The Family.

Now once again modern man can dabble in the 'Everyday-Art' to revive his conscience of 'Everyday-Sins' and revive the forgotten 'Folk Art' in the 21st century.

Today ironically even technologies are judged by the prefix: state-of-the-art. It is no less important to understand the role of technological innovations in the shaping of Art.
ARTunderground has organised a series of workshops, exhibitions and auctions that reach out to varied groups... fine artists, architects, design students, executives, women, senior citizens and children of all ages.

They seek a new paradigm of journalism, one that encourages an active dialogue between the author and reader and, also, the subject.

The PixelPress online magazine features projects that use a variety of linear and non-linear strategies, attempting to articulate visions of human possibility even while confirming human frailty. For them, the digital revolution is a revolution in consciousness, not in commerce.

PixelPress works with organizations such as Crimes of War, Human Rights Watch, World Health Organization and UNICEF to create Web sites that deal directly with contemporary issues in complex and innovative ways that circumvent media sensationalism and simplification. They also try to factor in ways that the viewer can help remedy social problems, rather than remain a spectator. Recently we completed a site focusing on how to end polio worldwide; another trying to aid an orphanage in Rwanda; one trying to reclaim the Brazilian forest; and a site featuring the images of photographers from the Vietnam War. And they also create books with photographers such as Machiel Botman, Kent Klich and Sebastião Salgado on social themes, as well as traveling exhibitions using both digital and conventional processes.

traditionally the children fly kites leading up to independance day (15/08) but I've been seeing them in Delhi since April. nice to watch in the afternoons if you're out and about. the kids get up on the roof of their apartment block and fly small hanky sized kites whilst dodging the power lines. I haven't been able to get a good shot but this one will remind me of them in the meantime.
