this is some video I took with my old camera as I drove into Brisbane from Sydney for the final visit prior to leaving for the UK. you can't see much detail - but the lights are colourful and I can tell each step along the way - probably have a story for most of the spots driven past. I can't remember how many times I've driven through the city and valley over the years when I lived there. the valley looked alot different - new business, brighter lights. it brings back lots of nice memories of the fun times in brisbane!

the drive to Canberra to see Tab & Andrew while she's pregnant. shaky footage as I was driving! I took a couple of the brown signed tourist drives and ended up on a 75 km unsealed dirt mountain track on the way to Wombeyan Caves. I had to beep the horn going round the blind corners and the tyres were sliding a bit some of the time so it was a bit scary. it took me a couple of hours as I was driving so slowly! luckily I didn't come across too many cars coming the other way. finally I made it to the bottom of the hill where the park is leading to the Caves. by this time it was 3:30pm and I thought I might have to do another 75k to get back to the highway, so I didn't actually make it to the caves - the shortest trip was a 1.5 hr guided walk which involved climbing inside the caves also. I did get to see lots of kangaroos though and the park was a nice oasis after the hairy drive through the mountains. luckily there was a 5 km road with about 1 km unsealed, but easier gradient road leading out of the park heading towards Golburn / Canberra, so the trip back was much quicker and safer! great to see Tab & Andrew before they have the baby, so it was worth the trip!!!

Vloggercon 2006 is being held in San Francisco this year. Here's the blurb from their site:
"VLOGGERCON 2006 is the intersection between media-makers and technology. A space for dialog and interaction. Of creation and collaboration. A media village born on the internet, and making camp for one weekend in San Francisco.
In the past year, videoblogging has grown into a myriad of forms with a worldwide voice. And your voice is needed at Vloggercon– after all, the media is being made by you so it’s your voice that we want to hear! Vloggercon is a two-day collection of roundtable discussions about the emergence and the future of this new medium; not a series of lec-tures. This conference is created for meeting and learning from each other, so be ready to share your thoughts!
Vloggercon 2006 will be held June 10 & 11 at the Swedish American Hall, 2174 Market Street, San Francisco CA 94114. "
http://www.vloggercon.com/ - tickets are available online.
Where 2.0
This one's about locative and GIS / Google Earth, Second Life / Electric Sheep & similar web apps. Would be good to see what's happening on this front at the moment. Here's the blurb from their site :
" Everything happens somewhere. With open source and free web mapping tools like Ka-Map and Google Maps, we finally have a way to display location information. At last year's Where 2.0, we put the spotlight on the grassroots developers building mash-ups on platforms from Microsoft, Yahoo!, and Google. This year we'll look at the latest developments in those platforms as well as the latest startups, civic projects, and labs experiments built on them.
In addition you'll find source mapping tools, open standards for data and location web services, and sensors for obtaining location data. We'll learn how the established geo industry is reacting to the first businesses making money from their grassroots geospatial projects. There's no better place to meet the people behind the mash-ups, the people behind the platforms, and the people looking ahead to the future of geospatial. "
yeah gimp is good. the interface isn't as nice as photoshop but it's free / open source and has many of the same features for image editing & conversion. if u were a graphic designer u'd probably go with photoshop cs or similar but for simple resizing/cropping and converting gimp does the same job.
http://www.gimp.org
here's a list of my fav s/w atm (at least what I'm using most these days). I've been playing with a bit of videoblogging so a lot of this is video related. (not in any order)
isadora : http://www.troikatronix.com/isadora.html
it's really cool for realtime video processing. so u could spend hours using it. even if u don't have a camera yourself, just download some quicktime movies from one of the videoblogging sites and do a cutup remix or something. the demo version (which I'm still using) only lets u save 5sec, so to make anything longer, u can just save 5sec at a time then past e them altogether in quicktime or another editing tool. some of the effects are similar to jitter (the video add on to max/msp) but they're all prebuilt so u don't have to write the code. just connect the patch cords.
http://www.troikatronix.com/isadora.html
max/msp http://www.cycling74.com
- it's great for writing realtime music. generally used in art / sound art installations or universities and experimental performances. jitter is the video processing as mentioned above. easy to spend hours using it. though the learning curve is a bit steep until u get the hang of it. I did a course which was helpful. has a 30 day demo. I bought the student price which is $59 for 9months licence so handy if you're doing a project.
http://www.cycling74.com
quicktime pro - www.apple.com/quicktime
if u pay the $30 to upgrade to quicktime pro u can then do video editing in quicktime. it does interactive video as well. and you can add text tracks, html links, link the whole video movie.
www.apple.com/quicktime
freemind mind mapping software

yeah gimp is good. the interface isn't as nice as photoshop but it's free / open source and has many of the same features for image editing & conversion. if u were a graphic designer u'd probably go with photoshop cs or similar but for simple resizing/cropping and converting gimp does the same job.
http://www.gimp.org

here's a list of my fav s/w atm (at least what I'm using most these days).

More bout NODE.London:

NODE.London [Networked, Open, Distributed, Events. London] is committed to
building the infrastructure and raising the visibility of media arts practice in
London. Working on an open, collaborative basis, NODE.London will culminate, in
its first year, in a month long season of media arts projects across London in
March 2006. http://nodel.org/

Media Mutandis: A NODE.London Reader:

A survey of media arts, technologies and politics which aims to provide a critical
context for NODE.London's activities as an evolving media arts production and
infrastructure-building project. A 1000 publications will be printed initially and
sold at a low price at the events of the March season. Contributing authors and
artists include: Armin Medosch, Simon Yuill and Chad McCail, Adam Hyde, Sabeth
Buchmann, Ruth Catlow and Marc Garrett, Michael Corris, Matthew Fuller, Graham
Harwood/Mongrel, Richard Barbrook and Neil Cummings.

The publication is engineerd via the Print On Demand system by NODE.London partner
OpenMute. It will be available as a printed and bound volume, a PDF document on
the publication website (url tbc) and the texts will be made available in
formatted versions individually for editing and recompilation by readers, who can
either order a printed and bound version of their selections through Print On
Demand or simply print them off at home. Readers can also become 'agents,' or
distributors - please see www.metamute.org for a fuller explanation of the magic
potential of POD.

here's a few ideas - not sure if they're inline with what you're already planning or if aren't feasible due to financial or time based reasons. plus some could be used in conjunction with the existing print mag

- website with back issues, and online, searchable articles available to subscribers via login. preview to visitors to the site
eg http://mitpress2.mit.edu/e-journals/Leonardo/ or http://salon.com/ (not hip hop related examples, but they have a good rep and product also)

http://undergrowth.org/ is another aus project I was working on. they have a pdf mag and have just upgraded their site and are trying out the collaborative publishing features (so the load is shared & streamline the process - has workflow, different approval levels, notification + heaps more)

- rich media pdfs - eg embedded quicktime video in pdf (large file size). pdf-cast the pdfs (even just back issues or special releases)

- podcast / videocast - audio interviews, video mag (including still images/photos)

- POD - print on demand distribution.
http://www.metamute.org/files/pod_distribution_w2p.pdf
their site is currently using drupal CMS which can do all the above also - I use drupal also. highly recommended. I'm not sure what your printing costs are currently but the ones they quote seem reasonable. though it's colour cover with b&w pages for the book, but there'd be other publishers out there which might be more suitable.

eg a couple of example scenarios:
1. website contains articles in secure part of site (or open depending on how u want to model it). site member tags articles they want to include in their personalised book. they hit the POD-me button and a custom pdf is created for them to download.

2. website contains pre-edited versions of the mag. the site member creates their order then a copy of the book is printed on demand/ad hoc. you already have the number of copies required for existing subs so can arrange for them to be printed. it might not be too hard to setup an sms or email subscription order so if a person saw an ad or flyer or poster or whatever, they sms/email a special account (or you) and their order is placed. use paypal or bank transfer etc or existing payment options.

- standalone stealth cds with pdfs on them for music shops. or interactive so they open the webpages if u are networked.

I'm suggesting online content /distrib as it's usually quicker to publish and easy for contributors to help with. perhaps do a 'special print edition' or annual book with collection of articles etc like the disrupt guys. it costs more to buy and comes out less, but is fat and full of articles and there's info on their site in the meantime. so it's like the collectors version compared to the ephemeral version

> so it's like the collectors version compared to the ephemeral version

by this I don't mean the current stealth mag is ephemeral - I mean the online content if this type of scenario was used. eg news/events/msg boards/short articles

Today, if we want to refer to a book we once borrowed, we can generally count on finding it again in a library or a bookstore. In the 18th and 19th centuries, though, bookstores and libraries were far smaller; though a good book might cost (as it does now) no more than a good restaurant meal, stores and libraries were orders of magnitude smaller.

As a result, readers habitually copied out passages they wished to remember in a personal journal or commonplace book. The custom had the advantage of calling the reader's attention into intimate contact with those passages that appealed to them most intensely. By copying passages longhand, the reader gains time to reflect both on the meaning and the construction of their favorite works.

anyway, this year I'd like to get into the habit of posting links to the sites I visit each night, an online copy of my history file of sorts. ... nice idea but so far I haven't found an easy way to export my firefox history file! still googling. attached is my home laptop firefox rss opml file (different to the site incoming feeds) plus my home firefox bookmarks (don't use them as often though) apart from the sage feeds.

I took some video - the collage doesn't do the day justice but perhaps gives some idea. There was so much to look at I had to choose some of the finer details to concentrate on.

This video was created in eZedia QTI for Windows. I'm trying out the software - you can add interactive components but for this example I didn't. I just left it simple. There's a limit to 5 objects on the trial version as well so I couldn't fit any more objects in without going over save/export limit! The only thing I don't like about it is that I need to host the videos locally (at least all together on another site of mine) instead of using a remote site such as archive.org. Which means if I use this technique again, I'll need to use smaller video files and loop them. Hopefully this doesn't make my site go over bandwidth - it's only a very small webspace. Oh well. See how it goes.

Also, I didn't add a controller to the movie so it'll play continuously until you close the page. The larger video screen will take a little while to load - it's about 15Mb. next thing to practice is different codecs / compression

The song is by The Orb - it's 10 seconds looped a couple of times. I love this song and it suits the scenery really well. I've just made a late change - added the audio to the small movie so at least there's something to listen to whilst the larger movie loads.

hrmm.. it seems IE doesn't like the movie file. and even firefox is sometimes not displaying the images but using a black background instead. will have to look into this further... seemed to work ok on my work pc so perhaps my home pc has a weird caching issue.

ok, it's a really hot sat afternoon here now (Auckland) and I've just returned from lunch and taking photos of street art & graf so have turned on the aircon and am emailing to cool down. at lunch I mentioned videoblogging to my friend, who hadn't really heard of it or realised it had a name. but one of the conversations was the difference between personal blogs and personal videoblogs. the main differentiation I see, is that written blogs (or even books), is really the little voice in your head speaking - letting it have a voice, whereas video diary entries are more real as you see the persons expressions and location not just descriptions of it. so you (the viewer) can connect differently to it. ie almost real vs imaginary, though not imaginary in the context of made up, but rather descriptive / virtual reality open to interpretation - the reality inside your mind compared to reality that you see. (prob not explaining this properly, perhaps I should have had the camera running at the time of the conversation as it was more coherent then).

ok, it's a really hot sat afternoon here now (Auckland) and I've just returned from lunch and taking photos of street art & graf so have turned on the aircon and am emailing to cool down. at lunch I mentioned videoblogging to my friend, who hadn't really heard of it or realised it had a name. but one of the conversations was the difference between personal blogs and personal videoblogs. the main differentiation I see, is that written blogs (or even books), is really the little voice in your head speaking - letting it have a voice, whereas video diary entries are more real as you see the persons expressions and location not just descriptions of it. so you (the viewer) can connect differently to it. ie almost real vs imaginary, though not imaginary in the context of made up, but rather descriptive / virtual reality open to interpretation - the reality inside your mind compared to reality that you see. (prob not explaining this properly, perhaps I should have had the camera running at the time of the conversation as it was more coherent then).

also, I see differences due to differences in speech - ie people write differently to how they actually speak - both in terms of grammar, and sentence structure, pauses, proper/formal language vs colloqialisms and even manner etc as well as topics. in a personal video blog a person might speak about something they might not be able to say to other people, or on a topic which isn't part of their normal day's conversation. perhaps this is due to working with people with different interests and ways of thinking. or they might show you something that they were thinking about, what was going through their mind at a point in time. this also happens in a written blog entry - more so I expect, as many people find it easier to write than speak especially in front of an audience/camera/possible audience.

and one more point I mentioned was that I'm constantly amazed at some of the things people can say in front of a camera and to an audience on a personal vlog - such personal things. I think this has more to do with my confidence levels in comparison. I could use one videoblog entry I've watched recently as an example (hopefully without causing offence. I don't mean to and apologise if it's taken that way) the person recently posted videos of he and his now girlfriend's private videoblog (they were taken at an earlier point in time). it was almost voyeristic of me to continue watching it, but as I watched the video, and could see them falling in love. it's such a great and special time, and it was shared with whoever was subbed to the vlog. I think that's amazing and something I could probably never do. I suppose there've been similarities in published books and letters, but to see their faces & hear the voices and realness during that awkward, exciting and special time brings back such memories of when it's happened to me. I think that's really powerful and something you don't often see except from your own personal perspective. sending their emotions out to the world for anyone to see.

I think perhaps I've been a bit sceptical of videoblogs in the past and have mostly seen video on the internet types, but seeing this level of 'personal-ness' (not really a word but all I can think of atm) available to anyone to see is changing my views of them. still not sure I could do one like that (prefer the live video conference with friends & no archive) but I can see the attraction to them. viewers will almost be watching other people's videos as they do soaps on tv these days. seeing a single video entry from a blog isn't probably going to mean much, but if you watched that person's vlog for a few months you'd have a personal connection to them - whether you interact with them with comments or not. almost like calling your friends to find out how their day/week went. it's reality on the internet. tv reality programs & soaps/scripted dramas on tv have nothing on these ;)

anyway, I'm probably destined to write non-topicness, but wanted to jot down some thoughts whilst it's fresh in my head and see if anyone else is thinking similar. (it's probably all been said before and I've missed it or wasn't listening properly)

ps - Robert, I suppose I'm not watching ebay for RB because I don't care about the result! I guess I don't have a personal attachment/interest to the outcome either way :)

Hi everyone, to change the topic slightly, and I'm not sure if it's really videoblogging theory or related per se, but one thing I like to notice is the changing moods and behaviours of when different technologies or interests are taken up. I've never done actual studies on it, so my thoughts are purely from observations, but I've seen it happen across many fields. do you know what academic studies there might be on these things?

basically what I'm talking about is watching the curve of the hype as people get interested in a new system, eg videoblogging, then over time seeing how their interest either remains or starts to fade. I noticed it changing again today which is a little earlier than other trends after reading some of the 'burn out' / take a break thread emails (I can't keep up with all the VBG emails due to volume & available time so there may be other examples). actually a chart/cluster diagram would be useful in describing it if I'm not doing that coherently enough.

obviously it's a natural thing for people's interest to change over time and according to responses either externally or internally to their involvement. but I've seen it in many communities both online and not. I find it interesting as there's always a few who stay for the long trip, lots who come and go and some who just try it out once or twice. happens in music communities (down to sub-genre level within the community), arts collectives, online mail lists and I definitely saw it in the internet radio community I used to work with also. I also love to see people get really passionate about things - some to the point of obsessiveness (record digging comes to mind). eventually people tend to get a bit jaded then they stop the activity. I think videoblogging, especially the personal videoblogging content producers might suffer this earlier due to the personal nature of their work and responses to their work as feelings get hurt. it will be interesting to see how many of the personal videoblogs are still around in say 5-10 years (though they'll likely be replaced by some other system by then), or if it's just a continual stream of new people topping up the number of personal videoblogs out there whilst early ones drop off for any number of reasons. this is looking at it from a slightly different perspective - not counting the acutal number of personal videoblogs, but monitoring individual blogs and monitoring their lifespan so to speak. from observations on other systems, it's the ones who can make it financially viable that are generally the longrunners, though it becomes 'work' rather than what it originally started as, even though they still enjoy doing it. and also the people who move more slowly & constantly through the system, perhaps contributing less or on a more occasional basis compared to the higher output/short term contributors, but who still like to keep their finger in the pie so to speak.

have others here noticed this also with communities you've been involved with. is it something used in academic worlds? (I always studied IT/eng so never came across it, but perhaps I just never looked in the right place)

anyway, just something that came to mind whilst browsing emails on a sat morning.

You are referring to near term information, Kath. However, related to
this for long term analysis, Ray Kurzweil and his group have been
studying, graphing and analyzing technology for over seven years now.
Kurzweil's book, "The Singularity is Near" shows data, graphs,

I found them fascinating and enlightening. One of the interesting
findings is that people have difficulty predicting when a technology
will become prevalent. Humans tend to see technological pace occuring
linearly while it operates exponentialy. So the predictions are too
soon (e.g., the dot.com boom) and too late (e.g., Film Studios
dismissing TV as a fad.)

one entry, caught my attention:

Quote:

This, here, is a man whose writings we find
engaging. His name is William Burroughs.
He writes, "The important fact about urban
living: the continual stream of second
attention awareness. Every license plate,
street sign, passing strangers, are saying
something to you".

Burroughs suggests walking on colours.
Pick a colour, edit out the rest and see
what associations come up. A yellow
jeep on 40th and Central Park West
transports his mind from New York to
Mexico, then to a gun-toting episode in
the life of a friend, then to old gangland
wars in Chinatown, and thence onto a
piece of writing by a gifted student.
"When you take these walks you are literally
travelling in time association
lines". You are reorganising space.

it's a nice idea. just thinking about the colours in this room where I've been living for the last eight months or so. some colours are very familiar as they belong to objects I brought with me - the red plastic Freedom cup, red right rca adapters, red plastic knitting needles cover I bought whilst here and on a knitting frenzy. yellow neon lights from the CityLife building across the city - the closest highrise adjacent to my loungeroom window. yellow(ish) wooden frames holding the photos of friends and family. most of the room is a beige-lichen green colour - the curtains, paint on the wall, chairs and chair pillows, carpet. brown for the couch and table near the door. black for the coffee table turned computer table, tv, STB and entertainment cupboard and the night sky out the window. silver for skytower (which turns 10 next week), my cameras and cds/dvds lying around. I'll try notice the colours more when I walk around the city and drive to work tomorrow. though I think the cybermohalla participants colour spotting is more interesting as they're watching the movement of the colours throughout the city life.

One of my favourite magazines back in the early 90s was Mondo 2000. It was hard to get - only a few places in Brisbane stocked it, actually only two that I recall and even then it was occasional.
