from Liquid Architecture's About page

Liquid Architecture, Australia's premier sound-arts festival, celebrates its eighth consecutive year with concerts, artist talks, workshops, forums, live performances, exhibitions, installations, audio-visuals and recorded work. Featuring our most imaginative musicians, composers, film-sound designers and media artists in a sense-specific feast for the ears.

What is 'Sound Art'?

"For many, it refers to sound-based art work (or at least art work where the principal focus is on sound) across the broad gamut of performance, installation and broadcast contexts, which departs from both traditional musical instrumentation and notational methods and frequently employs electronic media. Others may see it as an intersecting space with roots in post-Cageian music practice, or indeed 'post-phonographic' music practice, and installation art."
-- Julian Knowles then Professor of Music and Head of the School of Music and Drama at the University of Wollongong, in an article entitled Sound Practice, Sound Thesis in RealTime No68, August / September 2005

What is Liquid Architecture?

Liquid Architecture is a sense specific festival, as opposed to art form specific. Occurring annually since 2000, Liquid Architecture celebrates the diverse methods of sound making and sound theory. It is our belief that listening is a vital activity, and one that is often overlooked within the dominance of visual media in our environment.

What will I hear?

A key objective is the promotion of artists practicing on the periphery of music and sound culture, particularly those with an experimental aesthetic and a critical approach to (media) cultures. The artistic content of the festival focuses upon and privileges sound practice in all its manifestations but, due to the cross disciplinary potential of sound, many other art practices are included in the festival. Liquid Architecture focuses on any and all art forms involving particular emphasis on the auditory, including an exciting mix of musical performance, AV presentations and installation work, along with a strong critical element involving panels, workshops and artist talks.

Who's it for?

Now coming into its eighth consecutive year, Liquid Architecture strives to combine the fragmented communities in which sound arts practices occurs, striving for cross disciplinary appreciation and critique. The practical objective of this strategy is to popularise and publicise sound culture through greater aggregate audience size and a higher profile, and to make sound culture more accessible to the community, particularly to youth and student audiences. Audiences currently include those engaged with contemporary creative practice, sound arts practitioners, music industry professionals, electronic music concert goers, academics, cultural theorists and students (post & undergraduate), youth audiences and enthusiasts of adventurous popular music.

Liquid Architecture aims to popularise sound culture, particularly with young/emerging content producers within Australia's active student culture, in order to build not only future audiences but also future artists. Our rationale reflects an intense engagement with specialist and broader cultures, and the desire to make a contribution to those cultures. Sound practice is often cross disciplinary and the festival should reflect that, not only in the work presented but in the broad range of audiences it attracts.

The opportunities to network with national and international artists are an important means of generating future initiatives and cross cultural collaborations. The community is being exposed to some of the most exciting explorations occurring within sound culture that also happen to intersect with the media and fine arts. The exposure generated by Liquid Architecture is crucial in developing new audiences for the many discreet sound and experimental music communities currently operating around the country, and internationally.

Who's responsible?

Liquid Architecture is curated by practicing sound artists. Directed by Nat Bates, who heads the ((tRansMIT)) sound collective, and co-directed with Ben Byrne and Shannon O'Neill from alias frequencies and Lawrence English from ROOM40. The Artefacts of Australian Experimental Music CD launch is presented by Shame File Music.

Ben and Shannon have fostered a Sydney home at the Performance Space, Lawrence works closely with the Brisbane Powerhouse, and in Melbourne the festival is once again supported by RMIT Union Arts and returns again to the Arts House at the North Melbourne Town Hall.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its principal arts funding and advisory body.
The Sydney season is supported by Arts NSW, Melbourne by Arts Victoria.
Pauline Oliveros and Ione's visit has been made possible through the Alt.Music Festival under The Audio Foundation New Zealand, and in co-operation with the Fulbright association.
Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock and Dave Philips' visit is supported by Pro Helvetia and dual plover.
Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine's visit is supported by the French Embassy and Alliance Francaise.

As founder and former front man of Ultravox! until 1979, and subsequently via his solo projects, John Foxx's work has helped pave the way for a generation of electronic musicians. His debut album, 1980's Metamatic, is today regarded of one of the most pioneering albums in electronic music and created a new wave blueprint for the likes of The Human League, Gary Numan, Duran Duran and, in more recent years, The Faint to follow. Metamatic hit a cultural vein again 20 years later when Ladytron, Adult, Tiga and co were drawn to its minimalist, analogue approach.

In the 90s, John worked with Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass) and LFO, while some of the major electronic acts of that period, such as Aphex Twin, Leftfield and Dave Clarke, were also fans. Ever exploring audio and visual concepts, John's work continues through to the present day, including collaborations with Harold Budd, Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and his ongoing recording and live performance relationship with Louis Gordon, with John's graphics, films and photographic images being exhibited in several major international cities including New York and London, as well as gracing the front covers of books by Salman Rushdie, Jeanette Winterson and Anthony Burgess.

John's projects have included the ongoing Cathedral Oceans and 2006's instrumental concept album Tiny Colour Movies, both of which John has performed live, accompanied by continuous visuals.

Today John Foxx is held with high regard in the electronic music scene. While still lecturing in art and design and working as an exhibiting artist, John's music has been cited as influential from bands as diverse as The Klaxons – clearly indicating that his music still maintains the mysterious magnetism and splendour that shaped a generation of music fans and bands alike, almost 30 years ago.

Coinciding with the critically acclaimed recent release of a remastered Metamatic and the proposed New Year release of a compilation of John's works, John is embarking on a tour of Australia presenting both live performances of his current work and back catalogue, together with performances of Tiny Colour Movies at selected venues, with the following confirmed dates:

Art of Record Production Conference

Brisbane, Australia in 2007 and Lowell, Massachusetts in 2008

PRESS RELEASE – Feb 2008

The Art of Record Production Conference organised by London College of Music, TVU lecturer, Simon Zagorski-Thomas just seems to be going from strength to strength. In December last year it moved out of the United Kingdom for the first time when it was hosted by Professor Andy Arthurs, Professor Julian Knowles and Dr. Donna Hewitt at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia and in November of this year it will be hosted by Professor William Moylan at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The keynote speaker in Brisbane was Hank Shocklee who rose to prominence producing Public Enemy, has worked with artists as varied as Madonna, Peter Gabriel and Janet Jackson and who currently heads up his own New Media Entertainment company, Shocklee Entertainment. As well as academic papers on a wide range of subjects on and around the central theme of record production, the conference featured other industry speakers including Richard Lush (Beatles, Lalo Schifrin), Daniel Denholm (Tognetti’s Bach violin sonatas and partitas, Kylie), Pip Williams (Nightwish, Moody Blues), Mike Howlett (Martha and the Muffins, OMD) and Steve D'Agostino (Depeche Mode, John Foxx).

Hank Shocklee obviously enjoyed his experience in Brisbane, saying: "It was a great experience to be a part of The Art of Record Production Conference and meet such talented musical minds in an environment truly dedicated to furthering the dialog on music production."

Simon Zagorski-Thomas, the director of the Art of Record Production conference, says he’s been overwhelmed by the response in the few days since the call for papers for ARP08 was released: “I received the first expression of interest by email before I’d even finished posting the Call For Papers on the website – and that was from a Grammy Award winning engineer / producer in New York! In the few days following I’ve had emails about potential paper presentations from more than half a dozen different countries.”

Professor William Moylan, the host of ARP08 was equally enthusiastic: “My colleagues and I at the University of Massachusetts Lowell are honored to be hosting the 2008 Art of Record Production Conference. We are excited to be the first North American platform for this important exchange of ideas, experiences, knowledge and music, and look forward to this opportunity to share our exceptional facilities and resources with attendees from throughout the world!“

Negotiations are still under way concerning the industry speakers for the November 2008 conference but some very high profile and exciting announcements are expected in the near future. The Call For Papers and other details about the conference can be found at: http://www.artofrecordproduction.com

What past critics had to say about Unleashed, Those with Lucifer and The Dresden Dolls shows:

"There seems to be a distinct visceral contact between performers and audience, which is like no ther form of theatre I have expirienced. This work was a maelstrom of flesh and spirit, with a keen tension sustained between the poignant and playful, all moving inexorably towards the heart-breaking climax. I couldn't sleep that night..."

"This highly erotic and nightmarish fantasy is exactly what you'd imagine David Lynch and Trent Reznor to come up with over coffee an cake."

"Here we see the perfection of the naked human body pushed to the limits of ecstasy and pain, a rare opportunity to experience a flawless embodiment of wit and passion."

"This show sets out to smash boundaries and succeseds with intelligence, creativity and dark originality. What they have achieved is edgy, eerie, sometimes riotously funny and often stunning."

THE ENNEAGRAM WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 8 – Sun 9 March
WISDOM & COMPASSION WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 15 – Sun 16 March
In 2004, 2006 and 2007, Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre hosted exciting weekend workshops with Lawrence Graziose from the USA, a renowned teacher of The Enneagram and of the Zen Buddist/Taoist View of Human Nature. We are pleased to welcome him back in 2008 and he has suggested that this may be his last visit to Australia for a while due to exciting opportunities available to him in the USA…so this may be your last chance!
THE ENNEAGRAM WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 8 – Sun 9 March (10AM – 5PM)
The Enneagram is an ancient psychological model which analyses personality types, ego structures and behaviours. It will look at nine ego-fixations which can create suffering in our daily lives and it offers ‘antidotes’ which can counteract the tendency to follow these ego-habits. It proves to be very useful for our work as actors investigating human nature and for our own personal development.
WISDOM & COMPASSION WEEKEND WORKSHOP Sat 15 – Sun 16 March (10AM – 5PM)
The section on wisdom will focus on spiritual practices that are designed to create an open and expanded mind. The section on Compassion will focus on practices that are designed to open the heart centre to the ‘service of others’. Both sets of practices help us to find true happiness in our lives.

http://www.ima.org.au/pages/whats-on.php

The Brisbane Sound will map cross-pollination between the indie and experimental music scenes and the art scene in Brisbane during the post-punk years, 1978–1983.

This multi-layered project will incorporate an exhibition, concerts and a book. It will concentrate on the role of key individuals, including Ed Kuepper, Robert Forster and Eugene Carchesio, each of whom will curate a special concert for the project.

In addition to receiving international critical acclaim for their music, Kuepper (founder of The Saints) and Forster (founder of The Go-Betweens) have consistently maintained a working relationship with visual artists and the art world, while Carchesio, who is primarily known as a visual artist, is also a product of the same music/art milieu.

The Brisbane Sound builds on earlier IMA projects, in particular Ross Harley's groundbreaking 1986 exhibition 'Know Your Product', which surveyed crossovers between the art and indie music scenes in Brisbane between 1976 and 1986. It was the first time the convergence of local art and music worlds was made visible in an institutional context. Harley’s project assembled a breadth of material, arguing that the sorting would come later, and that certain aspects would assume greater significance in the future. The Brisbane Sound offers itself as the fulfillment of this idea.

In addition to Kuepper, Forster and Carchesio, The Brisbane Sound will showcase the multifarious activities of Gary Warner, including his graphic work, experimental sound works, Super 8 films and contributions to local indie groups including The Leftovers, Zero/Xero and Out Of Nowhere.

In addition, there will be a focus on the graphic work of Peter Loveday, Terry Murphy and John Willsteed, which paralleled and often served as a critique of Brisbane's dynamic alternative and experimental music/art scenes in the early 1980s.

The remarkable activities of John Nixon in Brisbane in 1980 and 1981 will also be the subject of close scrutiny. In these years Nixon’s exhibition program as director of the IMA, and his Anti-Music and Q Space projects challenged institutional orthodoxies and served to collapse the local experimental art and alternative music scenes into one another.

The Brisbane Sound will also include specially commissioned contributions from Jenny Watson, Judi Dransfield-Kuepper and Andrew Wilson, and will present a rarely seen 1979 television commercial for the Toowong Music Centre by The Go-Betweens featuring Robert Forster and the late Grant McLennan in acting roles, as well as the McLennan-scripted short film Heather's Gloves.

Expect a steamy summer evening loaded with slamming, dirty-groove, electro-laced, beguiling tunes, as award-winning Sydney band Super Massive bring their unique blend of rock and dance music to Brisbane over the Australia Day long weekend, as part of their first Queensland tour.

Super Massive play at The Step Inn, Brisbane on Australia Day, Saturday 26th January, in a night chock full of electro-rock goodness. Local electro-pop-rock band Elation lending their dirty grooves, big beats and sassy vocals in support, and the Dance In Circles DJs, Gay Dan & Ninja Rock will be there right through til 1:30am to guarantee the sexiest sounds for your ears and feet. Entry is $12, 8pm.

Super Massive were awarded the Best Alternative Artist Award at the 2007 MusicOz Awards in November, for their evocative and as-yet-unreleased synth/rock song “Fists”, which you can sneak preview on the band’s myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/supermassivesounds.

The band is the songwriting co-project of drummer/composer Glenn Abbott (formerly of ARIA winning band Machine Gun Fellatio & his own solo project The Bryan Ferrysexual Experience) and singer/writer Malina Hamilton-Smith.

Together with electric bass genius John D. Young (Chuck Berry, Marcia Hines, Vanda & Young) and talented young guitarist Marc Malouf, the four deliver a powerful and entertaining show that seamlessly blends loops, synths, electro sounds, deep funkiness and the lustiness of a full-blooded rock band, in creative and catchy, pop-structured songs.

Says Hamilton-Smith, "It's an entertaining and energetic show that people can either sit back and watch, or get up and dance to. There's a lot of variety in the songs and sounds to keep it interesting for the audience, and we drive it to the highest intensity we can, to make it a real thrilling, exhilarating night."

The band has been steadily building a following at live shows in Sydney over the past two years, performing to full houses at venues including Home Nightclub, Will & Toby’s Supper Club and Glebe Street Fair as well as at the Beach Hotel, Byron Bay.

The band's debut EP, which will include the award-winning song “Fists”, is due for release in March, however, a numbered Limited Edition Pre-Release CD will be available for purchase at the show.

Tour dates:

Wed 23rd Jan - Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle
Thurs 24th Jan - Hoey Moey, Coffs Harbour
Fri 25th Jan - Beach Hotel, Byron Bay

IN THIS EMAILOUT: NEW TRASH VIDEO SHORT FILM ON CHANNEL 31 TONIGHT! THE WENG WENG COLLECTION FOR SALE! OTHER FILM FESTIVAL STARTS TODAY!

Howdy all,

It was a hectic week leading up to our David Lynch/Inland Empire Fundraiser – many thanks to the intrepid Dendy publicity team spearheaded by Jill Robson, who never fails to come through to us. Thanks also to everyone who attended; unfortunately we had around 60 payers, which didn’t raise as much as we were hoping for (we had 250 tickets to sell…ouch…). SO the piles of new DVDs on the Trash shelves don’t actually exist as yet… here’s hoping for a good Christmas.

Meanwhile, our TV ad saturation campaign begins in earnest on Channel 31 from tonight: our 4 sixty second commercials are played in their entirety just before Plan 9 From Outer Space at 8.30pm. Please let me know what you think – they’re in French, black and white with subtitles, and deliberately Godard-esque. How this sells the concept of the shop, I have no idea, but I hope you’ll at least be entertained. Vive la revolution! Cheers, Andrew

SCHLOCK TREATMENT: Drive-In Double and Triple Features hosted by Trash Video’s ANDREW LEAVOLD, 8.30pm every Friday on 31, your Community TV!

    *
Premiering tonight before Plan 9… is Trash Video’s latest short film, a series of Godard-inspired sixty second commercials for Trash called “Apocalypse Mao, Or The Revolution Will Not Be Available On DVD: A Little Red Book In Four Chapters”. They’re b&w, in French with subtitles, and completely abstract! Let us know what you think…

NOVEMBER is “INVASION OF THE B KINGS” MONTH on SCHLOCK TREATMENT!

FRIDAY 16th NOVEMBER: ED WOOD JR TRIPLE #2! Ed Wood’s most famous Z-grade masterpiece Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959), its pseudo-sequel Night Of The Ghouls (1959), plus teenage gang girls run riot in The Violent Years (1956)!

FRIDAY 23rd NOVEMBER: Our three B Kings return with The Thrill Killers (Ray Dennis Steckler, 1965), Zontar The Thing From Venus (Larry Buchanan, 1966), and the dead-headed western Deadwood 76 (Arch Hall Jr, 1965)

FRIDAY 30th NOVEMBER: ED WOOD JR TRIPLE #3! Schlock Treatment exposes the “kinkier” side of Ed Wood– the cross-dressing Glen Or Glenda (1953), the pornography-obsessed The Sinister Urge (1960), and the topless go-go ghoulathon Orgy Of The Dead (1965)!

BUY YOUR OWN “SCHLOCK TREATMENT” ON DVD - $10 PER FILM!

You can now own your very own Schlock Treatment B-features on DVD-R. At $10 per movie (postpaid anywhere in Australia), you can go nuts! (PLEASE NOTE: Discs come without covers on DVD-R PAL all-region discs, and are believed to be in the public domain – we do not claim to have rights over the material, nor do we believe we are infringing copyright by copying them for your viewing pleasure!)

FOR YOUR HEIGHT ONLY (1981) Thats right - a FILIPINO MIDGET JAMES BOND RIPOFF!!! Follow Secret Agent Double O, played by three foot superstar Weng Weng, as he king hits the baddies in the crotch, gets the girl (shudder) and infiltrates the lair of the dwarf criminal mastermind Mr Giant. My vote for the MOST INSANE MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!!!

THE IMPOSSIBLE KID (1982) Weng Weng is back (on a miniature motorbike!), working for Interpol and battling the powerful international supercriminal Sockhead!

D’WILD WILD WENG (1982) Weng Weng’s third and rarest starring role as “Mr Weng”, a government agent sent to the troubled Santa Monica to rescue the townsfolk from the corrupt new Mayor. It’s a midget Filipino western, with everyone in Mexican mustaches and sombreros! Fans of Weng Weng will recognize most of the cast from For Your Height Only and The Impossible Kid, and will spill their cereal over two-foot-nine Weng’s insane gravity-defying antics.
GIVEAWAYS THIS WEEKEND

INTO THE WILD: When 22 year old college graduate Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch, Lords of Dogtown, Alpha Dogs) walked away from a promising career and a life of privilege into the wild in search of adventure, his journey transformed him into an enduring symbol for countless people. Each strand of this real life journey is woven into Sean Penns screen adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s acclaimed bestseller INTO THE WILD, which is as much about the insatiable yearning for family, home and connection, as it is the search for truth and happiness. McCandless quest took him from the wheat fields of South Dakota on a renegade trip down the Colorado River to the non-conformists’ refuge of Slab City, California, and beyond. Along the way, he encountered a series of colorful characters at the very edges of society who shaped his understanding of the world and in turn McCandless changed their lives forever. In the end, he tested himself by heading alone into the wilds of the great North, where everything he had seen and learned and felt came to a head in ways he could never have expected. INTO THE WILD is an unforgettable journey, brought to the big screen by Academy Award® winner Sean Penn and starring Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt, Catherine Keener, Vince Vaughn and Jena Malone. With cinematography by Eric Gautier (The Motorcycle Diaries) and a soundtrack by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, INTO THE WILD is a haunting, stunning film, simply not to be missed. We have TWENTY DOUBLE PASSES to give away this weekend to the first 20 customers to rent something, for the special SNEAK PREVIEW SCREENINGS for any participating cinema over the weekend Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th November, courtesy of the wildcats at Paramount Pictures.
Illuminating the Process... OtherFilm Workshops this week!

Lightstruck
A workshop for moving photogram creations delivered by Kerry Laitala (San Francisco)

Saturday 17th November 2007, 10am - 4pm
Queensland College of Art,
Photography darkrooms (level 3)
226 Grey St, South Bank, Brisbane, Australia
FREE / open to all - beginners and advanced encouraged

Modern day cine-mesmerist, film artist, film educator and creator of Muse of Cinema (35mm, 2006; featured in Rotterdam Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Edinburgh Film Festival etc.), Kerry Laitala invites you to delve into her ultra-specialist treasure trove of knowledge on early cinema, optical film art, and her deep fascination with the spectre/spectator.

In this special one-off workshop, Kerry leads participants through a hands-on journey into the cinematic unknown. Working with 35mm colour film stock, torch light and an array of random objects and liquid, participants will create a collective abstract film over the course of the workshop using the photogram technique. Like May Ray's early photogram films (coined 'Rayograms'), experimental cinema artists have constantly re-imagined available resources creatively, to explore the limitless possibilities of moving image.

Instructional: Place found objects and materials directly onto the film and cast their shadows upon the raw emulsion with light! BYO transparent, translucent and opaque materials used to form latent shadowgraphic traces which are brought to life through hand processing; feathers, buttons, shells, sequins, Letraset letters, symbols and numbers, images printed on to acetate, painted film, anything graphically or texturally interesting.... . A vintage filmstrip projector will be engaged to project the film back the very same evening at the OFF07 event Monster Soup!

Info on Kerry Laitala: www.othercinema.com/klaitala

All are encouraged; however bookings are preferable, email to secure a spot! info@otherfilm.org
Artist Talk - Kerry Laitala
Thursday 15th November 6.30pm
State Library of Queensland,
Auditorium 2 (level 2), Cultural Centre,
Stanley Place, South Bank, Brisbane, Australia

Laitala grew up in the wilds of the Maine coast, developing a chronic passion for old things. Her penchant for medical imagery and artifacts of decay springs from occupations in medical and dental institutions where she works during the day (when she is not teaching film classes at the San Francisco Art Institute). Laitala also has a deep, abiding interest in the early history of cinema and pre-cinematic explorations, which have informed her work immensely. For every work she produces, she places her fingers on the pulse of the piece and allows it to grow organically, without a script or prescribed plan. She prescribes to the concepts laid down by early feminist and cine-club founder Germaine Dulac, maker of surrealist films in the 1920's, that cinema should not be enslaved by narrative and theatre, but rather should give form to our dreams and fantasies, and applies this to expansion of the cinema at every opportunity...

We have to thank a range of amazing folks, bodies, bureaucracies for all the support they've given us. The OtherFilm Festival 2007 has been brought into being by the Australia Council for the Arts, the Brisbane City Council, Pacific Film and Television Commission, Queensland College of Art; Griffith University, and numerous volunteers.

Brisbane - December 10 and 11

http://www.arpbrisbane.com

Unmasking the art behind making a truly great record will be the focus of a very
special event in Brisbane next month.

The third Annual Art of Record Production Conference will take place at The
Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Creative Industries Precinct, Kelvin
Grove, on December 10 and 11, 2007.

Featuring some of the most exciting music producers this country has to offer - plus a
keynote address from iconic US DJ/Producer Hank Shocklee (Public Enemy,
BombSquad) - The Art of Record Production is a World Class event being presented
for the very first time in the southern hemisphere.

The conference has been previously staged in London and Edinburgh and its move to
Brisbane in 2007 is further recognition of the city’s emergence as a global music
industry hotspot.

The two day event will hear from acclaimed Australian producers including Daniel
Denholm (Midnight Oil, Cruel Sea, Alex Lloyd), Tom Ellard (Severed Heads), Dave
Trump (Pollyanna, Big Heavy Stuff, Violetine, You Am I), Adrian Boland ( The
Divinyls) and Richard Lush (Abbey Road Studios engineer plus producer of Sherbert,
Jon English and many more).

Conference delegates will have the opportunity to interact with speakers throughout
the event.

Hosted by Professor Andy Arthurs, Professor Julian Knowles and Dr Donna
Hewitt at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), the Art of Record
Production is a must for Queensland artists and upcoming producers alike.

More than 30 academic papers with Q & A sessions will also be presented on the
following:

• Lo-Fi vs Hi-Fi. The future of the studio and the producer. The association of large
studios with large sales and small studios with small sales is no longer a given. How
has practice changed? How will it change in the future? What are the roles of the
producer, engineer, sound designer, artist, songwriter and performer and to what
extent are these still delineated as separate or conflated? What is the place for the
professional, the amateur or the pro/am?

• Recording as a compositional process. Which comes first, the recording or the
performance? A recording is pivotal in the compositional act. To what extent does it
drive the process? Has recording demolished the concept of authenticity? To what
extent is the recording the modern score?

• Sound recording, new technologies and new contexts. For over 50 years
recording has not necessarily meant the documentation of a single sound event. Nor is
it always merely a linear product such as a song, a symphony or a film soundtrack. Art of Record Production Conference 2007
recording has not necessarily meant the documentation of a single sound event. Nor is
it always merely a linear product such as a song, a symphony or a film soundtrack.
Record producers often need to understand the new contexts in which their work will
exist. Increasingly uses have become more fluid and interactive. Recorded sound is
now part of the fabric of games, the internet, emerging media, mobile networks, and
live performance. New aesthetics have emerged in parallel with technical and creative
innovations. Is there still a directorial role for a producer to “get the best from the
musicians”? Are streaming and downloading our friends or foes? What of the legal
issues and initiatives such as Creative Commons?

• The art surrounding the art. In a world where no discipline is an island, what is the
interaction with, and impact upon record production of videos, CD covers, online
spaces and virtual sites?

• The Changing Role of the Producer. The evolution of the role of record producer
and what the future holds.
