Browning Mummery (BM) has been quietly pioneering electronic and
experimental music in Australia for almost 20 years. BM began in
Sydney in 1983, founded by Andrew Lonsdale, gathering a small but
appreciative audience, and slow recognition by his peers.
Tom Ellard from Severed Heads, and Philip Brophy have both included
BM in written articles on Australian EM, singling out Lonsdale's work
as being at the forefront of Australian experimentation with audio
montage and soundscaping. Browning has been credited as being highly
influential by members of Itchy & Scratchy and numerous other 'new
generation' EM acts.
BM released several cassettes during the 80's and early 90's, before
launching into digital media in the 90's, with a CD release in 1997,
and as part of the pioneering 'Obelisk' web site since 1995. BM was
one of the original acts released by Extreme as a cassette label
during the 80's. BM has also appeared on compilations including the
legendary 'Lunakhod' cassette album in 1984, with Severed Heads and
others.
BM's sound and interview featured on the 'FOI' video documentary
screened on Optus Localvision in 1998. BM provided the soundtrack for
the film/performance 'Square' by Jo Cunynghame, which was a showcase
feature at a Melbourne Arts Festival in 1985.
BM has appeared on many radio stations, from 2MBS, 2SER in Sydney to
3PBS in Melbourne, 4ZZZ in Brisbane, and even making it to American
FM radio station playlists in the late 80's.
After leaving the Sydney area, in recent years BM has performed at
many events and venues in Brisbane, including the Livid Lounge in '95
with Memory Loss, and the Boundary St Festival in 1999, and can often
be found performing with the Electric Tipi Collective. BM has also
performed in northern NSW and even at Lightning Ridge in the late
90's.
BM has also worked with John Murphy, of Whirlywirld and Hugo Klang
fame, over the last 10 years, with some recently recorded work being
released in Europe in 2000 showcasing that collaboration.
Andrew Lonsdale, who is responsible for the BM sound, began producing
EM in Rockhampton in 1980, and after relocating to Sydney in 1981,
became part of the early industrial/experimental music scene there,
releasing cassettes and performing as Boxmusik, ISMism (a collective
experiment), and Atomic Disease (with visual artist Nigel Gurney), as
well as Browning Mummery. Andrew continues to work as BM in Brisbane,
and will be undertaking a series of 20th anniversary performances
through 2001.
There is an 'experimental' home page for Browning Mummery @
http://sites.netscape.net/browningmummery/ - the content will change
in the near future - at present it's a javascript driven loop/sample
machine.

Browning Mummery's music can also be heard on briz:b:e:a:t:s this
Sunday from 12-1pm on www.pulseradio.net. He is performing live at
sun@mantra later that evening as a lead up to his 20th year musical
retrospective being held later in the year presented by label:KETTLE.
:::::: Hutt River Space Agency :::::::
Scheduled for launch on the evening of June 17, 2001, from Launch Pad
Mantra (Fortitude Valley Space Centre), HUTT RIVER SPACE AGENCY will
set the stage for spacewalks by veterans Greg Jenkins (endoPHONIC,
cactusman), Andrew Kettle (label:KETTLE) and Michael Norris (Flew
Creeking, Fugal Quease, Spin&Jam) to install an airlock bridging
ambient electronica and improvised soundscapes.
Once installed, the airlock will undergo a series of tests by ground
controllers and station crewmembers using junk percussion, friction
microphones and a cactus to verify that its environmental,
communications and telemetry systems work before Jenkins and Norris
venture out for the first phase of the mission.
During the second and third phases, Kettle will use the
electromagnetic induction rings to grapple and unberth two
pressurized oxygen tanks from Mantra's cargo bay. He will hand them,
one by one, to Jenkins and Norris for installation on the new airlock.
The HUTT RIVER SPACE AGENCY is not expected to survive re-entry and
will burn up harmlessly in the upper atmosphere.
Depending on how much fuel is left in the space rockets, hopefully
there will be a special preview of a recorded rehearsal from HRSA on
briz:b:e:a:t:s this Sunday between 12-1pm, otherwise you'll have
to
catch their one and only public performance at sun@mantra from 7:30pm
at Mantra in the Valley Mall, although only time will tell how the
cactus will survive space travel and loss of oxygen..
:::::: KETTLE ::::::
[taken from KETTLE's website : http://listen.to/kettle]
Andrew Kettle is a Brisbane sound Artist who has and is involved in
many aspects of the Brisbane and Australian noise/EM/sound art
community including :
:: Organiser of Live events in Brisbane highlighting experimental
musicians. (Deviations 1998-1999, Ambient Explosions 1999,2000)
:: Brisbane co-coordinator for touring interstate, experimental
musicians. (Peeled Hearts Paste, Simon Wickham-Smith, Cat Hope)
:: Developer of Label:KETTLE, an experimental music recording project
:: Collaborator with other Brisbane Artists, (Poota, A short Journey,

:: psyh-ambient / Chill / Experimental DJ.
Kettle's recording material dates to 1993, with several CD
releases
and numerous tracks on various artist compilations (Serbsky
Institute, ABC music, Vibragun, Last Chance Gasp, Phat Lips, Overt,
etc.); his work, heavily influenced by alchemy, is riddled with
transmutive processes and experiential work in the natural world.
His work has received extensive radioplay national on JJJ, Radio
National, ABC Classical FM, a special feature program on National SBS
FM Electronic Alchemy, and through numerous community radio stations
around Australia.
In 2000, Kettle's hidden senses where strongly enlived by his
research into electro-magnetic radiation as a sound source, creating
the ADAPT 2000/ Gratings / Electrofringe 2000
performances, 'Digilogue' and 'With my left eye closed...' CD
releases and sound track to Junia Wulf's animation, "Gray".
His passion for found sounds and extensive, discordant layering of
repetitive digital snippets lead him to complete field research into
drones that culminated in the "drone 9" & "The Turing
Test" (reviewed
in `Real Time', Dec/Jan.2000) performances at M.A.A.P.99.
Explorations of influencing Poetry with MIDI, " ... I take a sentence
for a poem, sample it, program in to the midi keyboard and play with
it as an instrument... fantastic patterns emerge from repetitively
layering single words or short sentences."
His performance at the Queensland Arts Week (1999), was an digital
poetry exercise with fellow artist, Junia Wulfe & A Short Journey.
Digitalising 5 sentence scripts and then using them as a backing
vocal texture.
He has presented a Masterclass on "Noise in Composition" for
`ADAPT'
1999 , talked at the "Community Radio & Electronic Music" Panel -
National Independant Electronic Labels Conference 2000, and appeared
at the ElectroFringe Festival (1999 & 2000) in Newcastle, performed
at the AIMIA Awards, assisted the ACMA 2000 conference
`Interfaces'
as a member of the steering committee, performances, and a series of
4 Radio shows.
He was the presenter/programmer for "Atmospheric
Disturbances", The
Experimental Musicians & Sound Artists show on Community Radio 4ZZZ
fm102.1. Wednesday Night, 11pm - Midnight, from June 1998 to July
2000.
"My initial exposure to non-music sounds came from listening to the
radio in rural Queensland, as a young boy, the reception was mostly
difficult so I developed a great interest in these broadcast noises,
especially sunspot activity."
KETTLE is also a member of Hutt River Space Agency alongside Greg
Jenkins [endoPHONIC/cactusman] and Michael Norris. He will be Djing
and performing live at sun@mantra this Sunday evening from 7:30pm at
Mantra in the Valley. Some of his music will also be played on
briz:b:e:a:t:s on www.pulseradio.net this Sunday from 12-1pm.

noise collaborations (turning things up to eleven [Flew Creeking]);
electroacoustic soundscapes and eclectic electronica (making bloopy
screechy noises [Fugal Quease]). More recent Fugal Quease live sets

listening via flamenco, synth tweakage and brass band music, and have
featured odd-meter beats and home-made electroacoustic instruments.
