:::::: DJ Switch ::::::
Mathew Sallur aka DJ Switch is no stranger to the Australian dance
scene. Starting out spinning vinyl in the early rave era in Perth,
Western Australia, Mathew then joined forces with Colin Kleyweg to
form the live breakbeat outfit known as inertia. Inertia enjoyed
success in Perth on the live circuit with shows such as THE BIG DAY
OUT, BJORK support act, WAMI Awards and countless club shows. Their
albums "Dub Grooves" & "Time Light & Motion" wore critics acclaim
forcing inertia to make the obvious move to Sydney.
Since moving to Sydney, Mathew has expanded his presence in the dance
scene by forming with partners the now "largest global dance radio
station" on the internet, "PULSERADIO" [http://www.pulseradio.net].
Still producing for inertia and also other collaborations, DJ Switch
can be found hosting "The StoneKutters Klub" twice a week on
Pulseradio presenting the latest in his specialty of genre "Tech
Breaks". Sometimes called "Australia's answer to Adam Freeland" ……..
DJ Switch is playing a set on briz:b:e:a:t:s this Sunday from 12-1pm.
He's also playing a breaks and tech-house set @ Mantra this Sunday
night as part of the Valley Fiesta special edition of sun@mantra.
Mantra is opening @ 2pm for a breaks and drum&bass afternoon leading
up to live hip hop/breaks/funk/vocals from Onioncak & Kleinzeit, as
well as drum&bass from DJ Erther and breaks and tech house from
Sydney's DJ Switch. Come along and join in the festivities!
:::::: DJ David Gunn ::::::
I started listening to Trance about 2 years ago. I bought "The
Clubbers Guide to Trance" and fell in love. That's where it all
really started. Initially I played around with some computer music
software like rebirth and stuff but it got pretty limited very
quickly. So then I saved up and bought some decks dreaming of
putting together an intense trance set. But by the time I had the
money and I started vinyl hunting, there was no good trance being
produced anymore. So what results now in my set is really a
culmination of a move towards music to move to. It's a collection of
tracks that really just put me in the groove and got me moving.
For me, that's what its all about. Loving what you are playing and
projecting that to the crowd. There is nothing worse than a DJ who
just stands up in his booth with his head down. Getting into music
is what it's all about for me, and I am a selfish DJ. For the past 9
months now, I have been concentrating on seamless mixing, worrying
more about the overall experience than a single track.
With a love for subversive basslines with a slightly funky tinge,
I've been producing tracks for about two years, which led me to
DJ'ing. My microphone, MD and computer are all I'd take onto a
desert island!!! Plus some food of course... I collaborate with a
mysterious producer by the name of Pokey, and together we seem to
create dark pulsating soundscapes with a slightly jungle and trancey
feel.
DJ David Gunn is playing a trance set on briz:b:e:a:t:s this Sunday
15th July from 1-2pm.
:::::: Kleinzeit ::::::
Kleinzeit are a Brisbane originals act formed late 1998. The consist
of two members, Vocalist, and Keys/Programming. They describe their
music as a fusion of ambient vocals over electronic landscapes and
soaring bass lines. They were first introduced into the Brisbane
scene at "The Hub Internet Cafe", followed by "The Press
Club", "Garuva Bar", "Rics Cafe", "Lustre Bar" and various festivals.
Kleinzeit's constantly evolving style enables them to explore new
fields and create a fresh new vibe for each venue.
Kleinzeit's ultimate goal is to present Atmospheric Grooves, a live
audio/visual experience, combining unique sound with abstract live
images. Following in the footsteps of Brisbane's talented electronic
acts, Kleinzeit offer a tight, precise performance to suit any venue.
Vocals : Julie Crossett, is a classicly trained singer who prides
herself in using her voice as an instrument. Her experiences range
from solo/duo projects. Previous band performances include a tour
with "The Pink Flyoyd Show" (Beyond the Darkside).
Keys and Programming : Danny Rhodes is a classicly trained pianist
who began composing at age 11. The knowledge gained at an early age
has led to an interest in sequencing and experimentation within the
electronic field.
Kleinzeit are playing on briz:b:e:a:t:s this Sunday 2-3pm. They are
also playing this Sunday evening @ Mantra for the Valley Fiesta (and
second last) version of sun@mantra along with Onioncak (Aka Scott)
who will be delivering his own fresh live hip-hop beats & breaks from
9:00pm, then X-overs into Kleinzeit's set where performing live
house, drum'n'bass, vocals & beats from 10:30pm. Come along and catch
them performing live and wind down from the Valley Feista madness!
:::::: DJ Ricemeister ::::::
BIOGRAPHY OF: NICK RICE
A.KA.
*ARCHIVES*
Fixated by the techno sound, Nick Rice started collecting vinyl in
the early 90s. Subsequent to wowing friends at house parties and
private recoveries, Ricey or Ricemeister, (as he came to be formally
instated) was initiated into DJing publicly in the dawn of '96 @ a
NYE warehouse recovery. From there, he advanced to secure first place
in the "Central Station" DJ competition. Following which accomplished
local promoter & DJ, Thief, impressed with the novices natural mixing
ability, stage presence, and choice of tunes, offered him a residency
@ the pumping underground Nu NRG club night dubbed - System 6. That
was 4 years ago.
Since then Ricemeister has stormed the local front playing stomping
sets at all the giant Brisbane raves and festivals for up to 3000
people, accumulating a fervent fan base in his rise. Celebrity
internationals Nick has shared billing with have included the likes
of: Steve Thomas, Alan Thompson, Fergie, and Pete Wardman
from "Trade", Baby Doc and SJ (Arriba), Tidy Girls, Rachel Auburn and
Anne Savage, former M.O.Sounds' DJ Heaven, Sony's Wayne G. Positiva's
Brainbug & Kevin Robinson, Binary Finary & Andy Passman(yelO.), B.K
from Nukleuz, Jimmy Hill from the U.K's Republica, Dave Lee from
Superclub Slinky, German DJ's Tom of Beatz Only, Jo of Fog Area
records plus Mark NRG from Tripoli Trax, and finally Scotsman Scott
Brown of Evolution records, R'n'R Fierce, Captain Tinrib and Karim
from Tinrib/Do Not Bend Records.
*STYLE*
Originally preferring the Hard House and NRG sounds, Ricemeister has
since also ventured into the realms of progressive house and trance.
With a passion for all four styles of electronic music,
Nicks `Trademarked Perfectionist Mixing' not only strives to do
justice to harder edged beats/NRG but also music with more soul. The
release of his first compilation tape, `Pushing the Limits' in March
of last year, practically ran out the door, which meant that after a
period spent consolidating his business, (which has since been sold.)
Nick is now extremely keen to release a sequel. Nick is also
currently gathering up gigging momentum with random DJ work at clubs
like: The Matrix and Mansion with more to follow. Ricemeister is a
permanent Virtual Touring Resident DJ, playing at all their Parties
such as Advent*jah, Time Tunnel, Two Tribes etc. Nick is now adamant
to take his DJing and music career as far as is physically possible,
and if enthusiasm is any gauge, the possibilities are limitless.
*FUTURE*
Nicks' most recent projects include the conceptualization of a new
company label: "Structure Records" which he plans to launch on the
net by the end of the year. It will be a plateau for local DJs to not
only promote themselves and their achievements, but also provide an
mp3 database where DJs can merchandize their old records to the
public and any mix-ups. This endeavor has already accrued the support
of local DJs Magoo, Havoc, Rasp, Miss Tracy to name a few. Nick also
has ambitions to develop a recording studio dubbed "Trademark"
enabling him to produce original material which will also be
available as the website evolves.
Other news on the horizon for Nick is the foundation of his own club
potentially with fellow local DJs Magoo, Havoc and Rasp. Ricemeister
is also set to play alongside the Perfecto DJs Pee Wee Ferris, Sean
Quinn and Mark James @ the 1st inaugural Bali Advent'jah happening in
August.
So after an introspective hiatus and reconnaissance, Ricey's back -
more focused, committed and determined than ever to make his
professional mark in the industry. With all these projects on the
drawing board to compliment the performance element of his DJing, it
would appear that for Ricemeister, all systems are very much set to
go again, for this "Pilot of the NU Breed…"
Ricemeister is playing on briz:b:e:a:t:s on Pulse Radio this Sunday
15th July from 3-4pm.
