The Boom Book - capturing the essence of the Boom Festival

The "Boom Book" was a project carried out during 2007 as a commemoration of Portugal's Boom Festival's 10th anniversary. The goal was is to independently release a book about Boom but also to highlight its main contribution to today's world - as leader in incorporating novel approaches to entertainment and providing experiences lived through a festival which can pioneer new perceptions and visions, enhancing all of us and our relationship with the world we live in.

This book is a collaborative project put together by anthropologists, journalists, designers, illustrators, poets, musicologists, and photographers to capture the essence of the Boom Festival. The Boom Book includes essays, interviews, visionary art by Alex Grey, Robert Venosa or Android, and innovative texts about psy-trance. It is a cultural record of striking importance, capturing the beauty of Boom and also the role of subcultures in a modern world.

visit http://www.boomfestival.org/boombook/ for information about the Boom Book, or http://www.boomfestival.org/ for details about the festival.
the 2008 Boom Festival will be held from 11-18th August. you can virtually visit the Boom Festival location in google earth.

BEN FROST + CHRIS CORSANO + LAWRENCE ENGLISH microMONO at the IMA, 19 January, 2008 (Brisbane)

That's right, Iceland resident and current heartthrob of the European post-electronic sound BEN FROST is headed to Brisbane for his first show in many years! His album Theory Of Machines has created quite a stir and this, added to the recently repressed Steelwound (his ROOM40 debut) seems to be only further proof that Frost is really onto something unique with his densely textured works.

Not only that, but we can also now confirm that percussionist CHRIS CORSANO will be joining the bill. From rolling with the Free-folk scene (Sunburned Hand of The Man/MV +EE, Tower Recordings), through Free Jazz (Evan Parker/John Edwards + Paul Flaherty), Noise (Vampire Belt/Jim O/Thurston Moore/Dream Aktion Unit +++) and onto the big stages playing in Björk's live band, Corsano has lit sparks of invention in every instance. His solo sets are jaw-dropping displays of not only technical prowess but advanced musicality.

LAWRENCE ENGLISH joins these two monsters of sound to deliver a set in celebration of the launch of his latest record on Sirr Records - 'IT'S UP TO US TO LIVE'. Following a 5 week stint in Europe in November and December 2007, he'll deliver a slab of new sound and debut some new pieces from future releases due mid 2008.

In all an evening not to be missed (!!!) at the IMA on Saturday January 19th from 8pm - it's going to be dense, delicate, fierce and loud! Something for everyone!

Dorkbot Melbourne >>> people doing strange things with electricity <<<

This month's presentations range from synthetic birds in swampy wetlands to wireless ultrasonic rangefinding with Arduinos. Steve Adam will talk about his Common Sounds installation, which was set in the Sale Common Wetland Reserve (Gippsland) for the WaterWater Festival in November 2005. The installation uses real-time generated synthetic multichannel audio which was diffused in a swampy wetland setting. The system was self-powered and involved numerous technical challenges. The installation's sounds include a range of synthetic birds and insects. Ross Bencina & Danielle Wilde will discuss the design and construction of an ultrasonic rangefinding system built as part of a recent residency at Steim Amsterdam by Ross, Danielle and Somaya Langley. The idea was to create a wireless system for measuring the distance between performers by timing ultrasonic pings from one unit to another. Each range finder unit uses an Arduino and has two separate ultrasonic sender and receiver circuits. The units use Nordic Semiconductor NRF2401 digital wireless radios to synchronise and transmit data back to a basestation. Ross and Danielle will discuss the successes and limitations of the project to date. read more for more details and links for each of the projects, or visit http://dorkbot.org/dorkbotmelbourne/

Andy Warhol retrospective in Brisbane 8 Dec 2007 - 30 Mar 2008 @ GOMA

Exclusive to Brisbane, Australia's first major Andy Warhol retrospective brings together more than 300 works spanning all areas of his practice from the 1950s until his death in 1987 — paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, photographs, films, videos and installations.

One of the most influential and important artists of the late twentieth century and the figurehead of Pop art, Andy Warhol created some of the most recognisable images of modern culture. The exhibition includes his important 'Death in America' works; iconic images of Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Onassis, Mao Zedong and Elvis Presley; and his Campbell's soup cans. The exhibition will show for the first time in Australia Warhol's early commercial work, Interview magazine as well as his late monumental paintings. 'Andy Warhol' will also investigate how the artist represented himself through his art practice, including his Self-Portrait paintings, Time Capsules, drawings, films and videos.

In addition to works from The Andy Warhol Museum, the exhibition includes loans from the National Gallery of Australia; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; the National Gallery of Victoria; and private collections.

The Australian Cinémathèque will present one of the largest and most complete surveys of Andy Warhol's film work to date. This major program of 53 films and 279 Screen Tests from the Museum of Modern Art, New York, includes many never before seen in Australia. Programs of documentaries, American independent cinema, and films for children will also be screened. Selected film and video works will also be shown within the exhibition. Screening details to be announced.
