MENSTRUATION SISTERS
Menstruation Sisters are more of a natural phenomenon than a musical group. Owing more to the sound of ice melting and eggs hatching than strummed guitars and pounded drums, the Sisters keep one ear on the ground and the other towards the atmosphere. Rather than working within the lines of modern rhythm and structure, they revert towards a primal direction, cutting off the fat and oozing forth only the most natural and unfettered sounds. Naturally, such a technique can be unsettling, as it’s not something most humans are interested to hear, or have heard since upright-walking became a viable mode of transportation. This is music for those who kill their own food.

MAKERS OF THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST
With an eerie haunting simplicity The Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast’s sound was an unobvious take on post punk angularity. Originally active through 1979-1983, during Sydney’s golden age of DIY underground culture. Part of the legendary M squared label roster, they reformed last year to help launch a retrospective box-set Pardon me for barking in like this on the label released by German label VOD, and have since being writing and recording new material.

THE VONN KRAPP FAMALIE
Smashing computers and screaming like Yoko
Eating a bible while riding a loco
Chopping guitars up and breaking the strings
These are a few of their favourite things

Fashion from Gitmo and two corn cob towers
Food fights at Easter, abuse of our powers
A cheaply made movie and Partridge readings
These are a few of our favourite things

When the pay’s good
And the flights free
Or when forced by dad
We all give a show of our favourite things
And then we don’t feel…oh who gives a shit.

:::

Auraltered State #2 – 6th March
http://performancespace.com.au/?p=498

NAKED ON THE VAGUE
Diving deep into a world of apocalyptic pop and psychedelic weirdness Naked On The Vague offer a modern take on the post punk aesthetic. Falling into existence in 2005 with a found organ, broken bass guitar, borrowed drum and some old doom poetry. Their 2007 debut album ‘the blood pressure sessions’ attracted them the attention of seminal US label siltbreeze, who are set to release their second album. The album (their first as a four piece after the original duo acquired a drummer and bass guitarist) is one of the most anticipated local releases this year

BRADBURY
Sydney Australia’s favourite chronically depressed, long term unemployed, alcoholic, asthmatic, homosexual electronic music pioneer. An early adherent to punderphonics, Gary Bradbury is a master editor of found sound, whether it be fastidious early experiments with reel to reel tape or working on today’s digital palette. Since his early involvement with seminal post punk group Severed Heads during their golden years in the early 1980, he has worked with the Sydney Theatre Company on scores for The Tempest and MacBeth and released three solo albums.

CRAB SMASHER
Crab Smasher is a NSW based group of improvisational sound sharks crafting a frenzied hodgepodge of weirdo psychedelic noise rock and experimental pop delicious. The band formed in 2002 as a cheesy electronic novelty noise act and have since mutated through a number of confusing formations into the sellout 4-5 headed rock-and-roll hydra that exists today. With about 13 or 14 CDR, cassette, and digital releases to their name, the band is currently working on a new LP, which promises to be both titillating and queer.

ABOUT THE CURATOR.
Lucas Abela has been an extremely active member of the Sydney musical community since he arrived here in from his native Gold Coast 1992. His musical contribution to the city has been immeasurable, producing radio for 2RSRfm, promoting countless shows and tours for local and international acts, hosting unique events in war bunkers, gay amusement parks and the infamous Drowning Man Festival on the Hawkesbury. He was also a founding member of the legendary DIY space Lanfranchi’s Memorial Discothèque. His label dualPLOVER, started with close friend swerve in 1995 has produced albums for many of the city’s artists including Gary Brabury, Naked On The Vague, Singing Sadie, Suicidal Rap Orgy, Alternahunk, Funky Terrorist and others. They even starting a CD manufacturing consolidation in-order to help the broader musical community. Then there’s his own music practice! Over the last 18 years Lucas’ initial turntable experiments have morphed into one of the most unique acts in the world. Described as "a trumpet player trapped in a two dimensional universe" Lucas’ unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass has astonished and bemused countless people in over 40 countries. By pressing his face and lips against discarded shards of glass he deftly employs various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries to turn them into crude musical instruments. A one of a kind act that re-defines the expression "don't try this at home" and quite simply needs to be witnessed to be fully appreciated, let alone understood.

Kevin Blechdom (real name: Kristin Erickson) was born in Florida in 1978.

Kevin Blechdom’s third solo album, GENTLEMANIA, was released on Sonig Records in April 2009, co-produced by Kevin and Mocky in Berlin. Less schizophrenic and madcap manic as her previous two electronic albums, on GENTLEMANIA we hear Blechdom slow down, take a deep breath, and, with thoughtful control, peel back layers of emotion. Combining a strong background in classical and experimental music with a broad knowledge of songwriting traditions, Kevin travels between and coalesces country jangle, Broadway show tunes, old-school R&B, and many other styles into a cohesive and true musical story. The autobiographical and interpersonal themes revolve around introspection, longing, doubt, hope, and ultimately, human transformation.

Since 2007, and to support her newest release, Blechdom is touring as a duo in a hi-tech country and ragtime band with Christopher Fleeger called BARNWAVE.

Kevin began recording music with her brother in an experimental rock band called ADULT RODEO in 1997, releasing two albums on the revered Shimmy Disc label and more records on the Adult Rodeo imprint, Four States Fair Records. Later she hooked up with Blevin Blectum (Bevin Kelley) and formed BLECTUM FROM BLECHDOM after an accidental collaboration one Halloween night while they were at Mills College in Oakland, California. Blectum from Blechdom was a hyperactive computer and sampler duo priding itself with its own digital confusion, frenetic madness, and psychotic delusions. The duo released frenzied and frazzled electronic music on labels such as Tigerbeat6, Deluxe, Orthlorng Musork, and Phthalo. The album “The Messy Jesse Fiesta” won 2nd prize at the prestigious Ars Electronica for digital music in 2001, and soon after they broke up. In 2006 Blectum from Blechdom reuinited by pie-ing each other in the face, and have since been recording and touring together.

After Blectum From Blechdom broke up, Kristin kept her team name Kevin Blechdom and relocated herself to Berlin for five years. She wrote and produced two albums for the Chicks on Speed label: BITCHES WITHOUT BRITCHES (2003) and EAT MY HEART OUT (2005). The albums are a mishmash of styles and production techniques. From Broadway musical to General MIDI rock opera to electro-smudge to aleatoric blatherings, her albums contribute a bizarre spin on what pop music can be for an era of attention span deficit.

Since 1998, Kevin has been touring around the world playing live shows and collaborating. She has worked with artists such as Eugene Chadbourne, Fred Frith, Jad Fair, Kramer, Jamie Lidell, Kid606, Dat Politics, Mocky, John Bischoff, Chris Brown, Zeena Parkins, Cristian Vogel, Safety Scissors, Heidi Mortenson, the Organ Lady, Lumberob, Ching Chong Song, Irene Moon, Teatro Praga, Myrobotfriend, Charlie Engstrom, Christopher Fleeger, Lucile Desamory, Chicks on Speed, Kim Hiorthoy, Andre Vida, Denzel Sinclair, Max Tundra, and Planningtorock. She has played shows in Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Moscow, and across Europe and the United States.

During 2008, she finally completed her M.F.A. degree in Electronic and Computer Music Composition at Mills College. Her final project for school was writing a forty minute opera called Recantata, which musically retold the story about her preschool teachers who were wrongfully imprisoned for satanic ritual abuse because of the misguidance of some child-hypnotizing psychologists.

Kevin produced two self-released Ching Chong Song albums, LITTLE NAKED GAY ADVENTURE and EVERYTHING IS FOR THE BABIES.

She is a founding member of SLAUGHTERIN' SLOBBERSVILLE, a semi-improvised collaborative improperatic musical mutant side show known for touring with too many people in very small vehicles.

Currently she is in Lisbon composing the music for a Musical Theater show called "DEMO" with the Teatro Praga company.

Instrumentation
Kevin Blechdom plays live in a duo called BARNWAVE, often billed as "Kevin Blechdom featuring BARNWAVE." Kevin plays piano, keyboards, digital effects (sometimes computer), banjo, and sings. Her partner, Christopher Fleeger (a.k.a. BARNWAVE) provides arena-sized real-time production via his self-programmed Max/MSP patches and a collection of membrane/mallet gestural controllers. During the show BARNWAVE and Blechdom exchange live MIDI data to synchronize real-time video software with the music. Basically it's a cabaret duo of piano & drums with a few computers in between.

CLARK PRESS RELEASE

Widely touted as "the next Aphex Twin", Warp Records' newest rising star, Chris Clark, has returned with his newest masterpiece, 'Totem’s Flare'. Hot on the heals of his critically lauded 'Growl's Garden' EP earlier this year, the new album is a triumphant mesh of breakneck dance music, baroque melodics, driving techno, and brash electro.

Signing to legendary UK imprint, Warp Records (Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Squarepusher, Battles) at 20, while still studying at Bristol University, Clark's potential to evolve from a young prodigy into a prolific and acclaimed musician was always apparent. Yet eight years and five albums on, the release of 'Totem's Flare' sees Clark display much more than that. It’s hyperactive intellect, its technically dazzling detail, its production finesse, and its insidiously melodic hooks, mark out what could only be perceived as the masterwork of one this generation’s finest electronic artists.

There is musicianship at work – Chris uses guitar, drums and piano, albeit unrecognisably heavily processed, and his programming is virtuosic – but there is no noodling here, nor is there any sense that this is music only for the cognoscenti. As Chris says "the ridiculous brute force of modern pop engineering is definitely not something I've ever shied away from" – and that is the context in which this album needs to be heard. Described as the culmination of a "trilogy" – which began with the elaborate melodics of 2006's 'Body Riddle', and continued with the hard dancefloor drive of 2008’s 'Turning Dragon' – 'Totem's Flare' combines the key qualities of earlier releases, while increasing the ambition, scale and panache.

Having garnered respect across the musical spectrum – sharing stages with the likes of Luke Vibert, Amon Tobin, and Tortoise; and doing remix work for the likes of Friendly Fires, Maximo Park and M.A.N.D.Y – Clark manages to infuse electronics with enough instantly-memorable riffs and immediately thrilling dynamics to give it a shocking degree of mass appeal.

INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM FOR CLARK

CLASH - "If you ignore these next 77 words then your life will never be the same. Clark has forged his best record EVER… it's the best dance music we’ve heard in 2009. Simple."

MIXMAG - "he has managed to combine the brute force of 'Turning Dragon' with the melodic sophistication of his earlier work, and frankly it sounds MASSIVE. The snarling bass, kicking breaks and waves of sound of the title track could teach the Chemical Bros a thing or two about stadium sized dynamics … it's simply awesome – in every sense of the word."

DEAZED AND CONFUSED - "The maginificent Totems Flare manages to do something no one could have predicted - Clark has made all the geeks want to dance"

FLUX -"Sure to be one of eletronica's highlights of the year"

METRO -"Excellent: Clark's Totems Flare is a lot of fun"

TIME OUT -"All All Round Killer"

CLASH - "Clark has forged his best record EVER… This is the sound of Clark having fun. And it’s the best dance music we've heard in 2009. Simple"

Online festival explores alternative presentations for upcoming artists

On 20 November the 4th edition will exhibit more than hundred works of audio visual art from international artists on the Streaming Festival website. Ten days non-stop contemporary art, films and visual experiments, available at any time from any location.
The Streaming Festival is based in the Netherlands but has no geographical borders; anyone with an internet connection can plug into a festival stream and start watching without having to pay an entrance fee.

Besides showing audio visual art from all over the world, we’ll also host an exhibition Streaming Stills in BH139.
We have always focused on online broadcasting through streaming servers, but even though that’s exactly how we like it, we realized that sooner or later offline locations would be our next step in exploring the possibilities to present art to the audience.
So, during the Streaming Stills exhibition we’ll place photographs on one side, while stills can be uploaded live by anyone with an internet connection. The stills’ll be streamed directly from the internet and randomly displayed on the other side of the gallery.

The opening of the festival, and the Streaming Stills exhibition will be held on 20 November 2009 at 20.00 in BH139 (Boekhorststraat 139 - the Hague, the Netherlands).
DJ Technician and Pametex will add music to the opening with a special soundtrack session.

The organiser of the festival; the isfth foundation, organises the 4th edition together with Dutch, and international cultural institutions like CultureTV, OtticaTV, Artikraak and the One Take Film Festival.

WIRED O P E N DAY gives the general public the first opportunity to interact with the ‘wires’ and witness its vast array of creative applications.
Performing at WIRED O P E N DAY will be the original wire maestro Alan LAMB and his core crew of collaborators Dave NOYZE, Garry BRADBURY, Oren AMBARCHI and Robin FOX. Each artist will be presenting unique ruminations of the 'wires' sonic capacities. Dave NOYZE and Alan LAMB will perform live mixes of this dynamic instrument; Garry BRADBURY provides a live mix in the pitch of ‘B’ (also the pitch of Bees in chorus!) for a 'great bow' acoustic performance by Alan LAMB; Oren AMBARCHI treats the wires like a giant guitar and amplifier; and Robin FOX utilises wire sounds to control a laser beam across the surface of water.
http://wiredlab.ning.com/events/wired-o-p-e-n-day
Commencing in the late afternoon audiences will be bussed from Cootamundra to The WIRED Lab site for a multi-sensory experience of site and sound. From sunset to nightfall audiences will experience the immense dynamic range and capacity of a musical instrument spanning hundreds of metres across the landscape. Affectionately called “... nature's microphone” by WIRED Lab curator Sarah LAST, the ‘wires’ and the WIRED O P E N DAY program expands many horizons, and will radically shift paradigms of art, music and space.
The WIRED Lab is a collaborative arts project uniquely located in the rural landscape of South West NSW. In 2007 The WIRED Lab was established to create a site for artists, scientists and audiences to expand upon æolian traditions, environmental sonification, ‘wire’ music and research originally developed by Alan Lamb. Since its inception many Australian and international artists have visited The WIRED Lab, their research continues, and October 31st is the first of many future open days.
